I'll never forget the first time when I saw this part of the game while watching my brother play through it, Meryl's death by Sniper Wolf (I know she lives in the story but just think of what it was like playing this for the first time in 1998), killing Psycho Mantis and Vulcan Raven, putting an end to Sniper Wolf's misery, being mercilessly tortured by Ocelot, fighting tooth and nail through Shadow Moses to get here, it all came down to this final showdown with Metal Gear Rex and thats the feeling that I think this theme captures. The final push to destroy Rex and put an end to this, Metal Gear Solid is still one of the best games ever made.
Game is a fucking golden masterpiece i had this copy when i was 5 years old and my uncle would wake me up before school and ask to play metal gear is so awesome
That blown away my little 7 years old brain right there, I know now how cheap that plot twist was, but they found a way to make it interesting in the following games so that gets a pass, MGS's the only saga that's that strong.

That moment honestly made me feel uneasy. No guards, no engineers/scientists working, just rex sitting unmanned in the hanger. I knew something was wrong from start but couldn't do anything other then move forward.
I always loved metal gear solid, specifically this MGS1. I remember it being one of the first games playing as a kid. I remember years later, playing with some friends at night and one never even hearing of the series. We all sat down and played it(the original, not twin snakes) and I recall my friend who was new to the series(there was four of us in total) seemed to look at REX in awe. When we finally beat the game, we went into the backyard, it was early morning just like it was in the game. Some of us had coffee, one of us had a cigarette with my friend saying "Damn...I feel like I accomplished something"
In MGS2 Snake tells Raiden something along the lines of, “This whole thing may have been fake, but what you felt during the mission was real.” That always hit home.
A perfect theme for Rex and it's terrifying power to fire an undetectable Nuclear strike from nearly anywhere on the planet thank god the railgun was removed from it in 4 so that it could blow up JD because as long as that thing was attached to legs it's threat value is immeasurable.
I remember playing this games demo with my uncle repeatedly that we couldn't wait for the game to be released that when it did we got it day one, I always felt rex had a personality all its own despite being a machine that it had a foreboding presence lingering over you in this room.

I remember my 9 year old self stayed up til 5am in the morning trying to beat this game. Mainly because I didn't have a memory card and the game was so good. I couldn't stop playing it. From having to run from one area to another having to change the pal key. The grueling battle with metal gear rex. Getting into a 1 on 1 fist fight with liquid on top of a destroyed rex. Realizing Meryl is not going to wake up due to me submitting to ocelot's torture. Then having a car chase while firing several rounds at liquid. "Not yet Snake. It's not over yet" "LIQUID!!!" Oh the memories.

Otacon: But unlike a missile, the railgun doesn't burn any propellent. So it can't be detected by any current ballistic missile detection systems...
Snake: An invisible nuclear warhead...
Otacon: Totally impossible to intercept. And on top of all that, it's got a surface piercing warhead, designed to penetrate hardened underground bases.
Snake: We learned that lesson in the Gulf War...
Otacon: This thing could mean the end of the world!
Snake: It's the ultimate weapon. And from a political point of view, it avoids the problems of nuclear reduction and nuclear inspections. Colonel! Is this true? Are you listening?

Snake: If word of this got out, it could delay the signing of the Start 3 Treaty and cause a huge international incident.

Otacon: Yes. That's why they were conducting this exercise. They needed to get actual data to backup the simulation.
Snake: What were the results?
Otacon: It looks like it went better than they hoped for. But...I can't find the data anywhere on this network. You'd think that data as important as that would be carefully recorded?
Snake: It was...President Baker gave me an optical disc with all of the test data.
Campbell: WHAT?! You still have it?!
Snake: No...Ocelot took it from me...
Campbell: Damn...
Otacon: The terrorists have replaced the dummy warhead with a real warhead. Once they input the detonation codes, they should be ready to launch!
Snake: So you think they can do it?
Otacon: Well, the dummy warhead was designed to be identical to the real thing, so I think so...
Snake: Did you found out, how to override it yet?
Otacon: Not yet...it must be on a seperate file. Right now, I'm looking through all of Baker's personal files.
