Michael Jordan vs Ron Harper + Dell Curry - The genesis of Jordan NBA comparisons

  • Comparisons will always exist in sports, but sometimes when you are a fan of that player, comparisons can become an annoyance... because you may feel that comparison falls short of the standard set by your favorite player.
Well, there were a lot of Ron Harper & Michael Jordan comparisons early in Ron Harper's career. It was an unfair comparison for Ron Harper, because he was incapable of reaching the dynamic level of consistency that Michael Jordan reached. At best Harper could produce games or glimpses that could be presented & marketed as "Jordan-like". But to be truly "Jordan-like" that means you play at that level virtually every single game, which nobody else in NBA history has been able to replicate. Ron Harper was not ACTUALLY "Jordan-like" because he never produced at an MJ level for a sustained amount of time. Harper shot over 50% for only one season, never averaged over 25ppg, and shot only 43% as a Clippers player. That's not "Jordan-like". And it was an unfair comparison to Jordan, because he was better than Ron Harper... give me a break. So, any time they stepped on the court there was a little extra added intrigue because Ron Harper was one of the early Jordan comparison players. Kobe Bryant reached the greatest heights of all the Jordan inspired athletes, but Ron Harper was at the genesis of Jordan comparisons.
Dell Curry was also matched up often with Michael Jordan in this basketball game, which was mildly intriguing at the time, but holds more intrigue today because Dell Curry's son, Steph Curry, went on to become the best winner of his generation, and also holds his argument for being a Top 10 player of all time. So you get to watch Michael compete with Steph's father.
Michael Jordan was locked in at this early stage of his career, in the 1980's. Far too often people talk about MJ as though he wasn't locked in from his rookie season & on. Michael was championship ready from the moment he stepped foot on an NBA court, the Bulls franchise however was not. Michael was at the peak of his abilities at this stage of his career. Nobody, before or after, played basketball at a higher level than MJ.

Ron Harper 6’6” super athletic. Just a notch or so below Jordan’s athleticism. Great overall player. Such a great compliment to the Bulls second 3 peat. I truly believe players today are not as fundamentally skilled as the past because they put to much emphasis on the 3 point shot. It takes away from playing instinctively and using touch and finesse for the 2 point shots. Shots like the baseline jumper that requires a little touch. The baby hooks, and playing with your back to the basket in the post etc. Jordan in an interview before game one of the 92 finals said that he doesn’t put emphasis on the 3 because it takes away from the rest of his game to be camping out on the 3 point line. But then after that interview he proceeded to hit six 3 pointers in the first half. A then record for most 3’s in a half of an NBA FINALS game. He literally did that because the media and Clyde Drexler said he couldn’t shoot the 3 ball. I guess he took that personally.

He also told Magic Johnson the night before the game, you know what's gonna happen tomorrow don't you? I'm going to roast him, and he did

Harper's knee with the Clippers may have kept him from being one of the greats, but he sure has a lot of rings and a lot to smile about

Harp was the dubbed the Poor Man's MJ. Of course he never reached the level of Jordan's rare air but he was hands down a Top 5 shooting guard at his peak. He was an All-Star snub at least twice and was on a trajectory to become an All-Star for the Clippers the year he blew out his knee. He never was the same dynamic high flyer after that, but he still was a crafty scorer the last 4 yrs with the Clippers and absolutely reinvented himself as a formidable defensive perimeter guard alongside Jordan and then Kobe to earn 5 championship rings. His pro career arc is like no other player in history. He's one of my favorite players of all-time.

I don’t want to sound like that get off my lawn guy but it is what it is. The game was much more beautiful to watch. Way more versatile. Post and perimeter play not just perimeter.

Sam Vincent dribbled too much, didn't play defense well AND didn't want to pass to MJ. His days were numbered.

To me Threatt would have been a better point guard for Jordan. I read that he was a bad influence off the court though.

I always wished Charles Oakley had stayed on the Bulls with MJ, they were a great duo together and with Pippen in the other forward position that would have been something, not that it would have changed much as you cant get any better than being the Champions so oh well, just would have been cool.
