I've been biking in the city over 30 years - and whether people are walking, biking, or using a scooter, too many assume that other cars/trucks are going to stop. Sense of self-preservation is like common sense - too many people don't have it.

I agree with this statement, but far too often people will call it victim blaming rather than seeing it as looking out for your own safety and not relying on random drivers to look out for your well being. Everyone should be doing their own small part in keeping the roads safe and avoiding injuring people.

the problem with that area is the bloody construction. I've known of three cyclists killed by construction vehicles in just a few years. I personally witnessed an oblivious construction worker operate a three foot circular saw to cut asphalt INSIDE A PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK without putting up any kind of barrier or closing the street, a Rosedale matron had to do a quick two step when he swung the saw back to his side without looking where he was putting it and stuck it right in her path (while it was rotating). Construction bros probably don't live as urban pedestrians or cyclists and they aren't going to anticipate all the people they need to accommodate on these downtown construction sites without intense training, very rigorous safety barrier/sign/lights/staff requirements from the city and a ton of inspection and oversight.

    • @davejohnson3773

Proper adherence to safety regulations is time consuming but construction companies don’t like the added expense. Before walking into the office working machinery, be sure to make positive eye contact with the operator. The operator is focused on his job. He doesn’t want to hurt you. Just let him know your intentions before you proceed. Education is the key.

Fees charged to drivers don't cover very much at all of construction and upkeep. Therefore no one owns the streets the way the motorist owns their vehicle. Yes it's the prime place of use of the car,but assignment is not ownership. Cars are not going to disappear from the streets in Canada/USA. Motorists will likely find that they will need to deal with a parallel and separate infrastructure for bikes and other alternative personal transport. Not true. Many people use bikes for transportation. Bikes should not be on sidewalks. Riders need to be responsible and law abiding. Sounds like this person wasn't.

@AellaMaude-oy9qn Ships , Aeroplanes, Tanks , Horse Buggies and I wonder the list goes on , if being vehicle is a criteria to be able to ride on road.
I wonder when common sense prevail . Bike riders are slow (as in they dont match the speed of most of the traffic) and perhaps most importantly they are un-protected. They have extremely high chance of accident / injuries / fatality. Unless their lanes are completely isolated , these should not be on the road, no matter how much training we may impart.

Most cyclists downtown are careless riders and have no regards for anyone else. They are very selfish and think they own the rode.

bikers wake up!!!! you may have the right of way...but if your killed then what was the point of the right of way. Cyclist need to wake up and realize that they are not the object they look out for on the road.
