Setup for Practice Welding Bike Frames | TIG Tuesday

- In the world of custom bicycle frames, the standards of quality for TIG welding have been set very high. To really improve over time, you need to weld as many bike frames as possible. But I've found that another form of practice-welding practice joints-can also be extremely valuable, allowing me to practice welding on a weekly or even daily basis. In this video, I show my process for preparing bicycle tubes for practice welding, and how I assess and learn from my work as I go.

I want to learn to weld so I can build bikes.I just don't know anyone that can teach me anything.The only classes I can find is stuff that people go to for a carrier I'm looking to do it more as a hobby for bicycle building.Is there classes out there for hobby welding?
Recently broke the kick stand support off the frame of my xr650l, done a little very poor arc weilding and decent plumbing soldering. Wondering if a tig weilder from Arbor freight or Lowes would be ok for my motorcyke frame with some self taught practice
What amperage is best for tug welding bike frames, whatever alloy is used?
Great videos!… I’m a long time roadie and airplane builder. Can you please suggest a good AC/DC Tig machine for welding thin wall chromoly and aluminum. I don’t need MIG. I’ll be welding thin wall 4130. The cheaper the better, I’m retired…Thanks

Turn the pulse off and start using your left hand as well to hold the torch with,it will suck for a little while but you will be a better welder for it.
How thin were those tube walls? Or the gauge?
Do you have any opinions on other mitering configurations? Specifically I'm curious about the mini mills like stuff from littlemachineshop dot com. @PithyBikes introduced me to that idea of getting a small operation started. Also the cheap and dirty stuff like Harbor Freight notchers is out there but those things look pretty sloppy. Anyway I'm REALLY digging your content. Thanks a ton for putting this stuff up!
I used to have the same mini mill as Steve at Pithy Bikes and it’s not bad for a limited space and budget. Tube notchers are not that useful in my limited experience. With the mini mill you can mostly get good results, it’s just not as nice as with a properly heavy, rigid, and powerful machine tool. It doesn’t have enough torque to run a hole saw at the proper low rpm so you have to run it fast and you wear them out a lot faster.
What filler size and tungsten size do you use?
I'm just learning to TIG weld and setting up to build my first frame. I bought a load of scrap frames out of a bike shop skip, partly so I could study the geometry and various details, but also so I could cut 'em up for welding practice. Reckon there's any downsides to doing that, ways they would differ from virgin tube? I know I'm going to have to remove the paint one way another and clean em' up.
Cleaning the paint is a chore but other than that it should be fine practice. By the time you do all those practice welds you’ll be way ahead.

At 3:25 , can I just use a regular drill press or do I need something crazy like that machine?
A drill press is made for axial loads (pressing straight down) and a milking machine has different spindle bearings and is built much heavier to properly allow radial loads on the spindle. Using a hole saw on a drill press to miter tubing can work in a pinch sometimes but a heavy milling machine is really the tool for the job. For a lot of reasons. And they can be bought used for relatively little $$ if you live in a post-industrial area like anywhere near Boston.

How do u know when weld is done well enough and strong enough for a safe bicycle?
That's not something I can really help with over youtube comments. Take a welding class or find someone with experience who is willing to teach you.

That should be easy for me to answer, but it isn’t really. First of all, the way my machine displays amps in the LCD is really odd and it makes it a PITA to know what amperage you have it set to max, but add to that that I like to use the pulser and also my foot to control the current as I go. If I wasn’t using a pulse and only a foot pedal, I’d probably start by setting the machine to 80 or so and seeing how that goes. And with a pulse I’d maybe set it to 120 or 150. Take that with a grain of salt. I just turn the knob up or down when I have to.

Which filler rod you use?
I'm used to using Weldmold 880t. Usually .045 or .035" diameter. I think it's similar to 312 stainless, but I don't know that for sure. For welding 4130 and similar steels it's great. People also commonly use er70s2 for this.
Welding would be easier with a speedglas helmet. Nevertheless, an impressive young man.
