- Game 7 - Lakers 108, Pistons 105
It took 24 playoff games, the most in NBA history at the time, but the Lakers became the first repeat champion since the Celtics won titles in 1968 and 1969 and the first team in NBA history to win three seven-game playoff series in the same season. This was also the first time in six attempts that the Lakers were able to win the seventh game of a championship series.
NBA Finals MVP James Worthy had the first triple-double of his career with 36 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists. Joe Dumars led the Pistons with 25 points but their leader, Isiah Thomas, was hampered by his ankle injury and finished with just 10 points on 4-of-12 from the field in playing 28 minutes.
The Pistons held a 5-point lead at the half, but the Lakers outscored the Pistons 36-21 in the third quarter. The Lakers still were leading 90-75 in the fourth quarter, but the Pistons mounted a comeback and got to within 102-100 with over a minute left in the game. Magic Johnson and Byron Scott combined to hit three of four free throws to make it 105-100 with 40 seconds remaining. A Dumars basket followed by a Worthy free throw had the Lakers lead at 106-102. Bill Laimbeer hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 106-105 with 6 seconds left, but A.C. Green got free for a layup and the Pistons couldn't get another shot off.
When the NBA ranked the 60 Greatest Playoff Moments in conjunction with the league's 60th anniversary, Worthy's triple-double ranked No. 52 on the list.
I remember this series like it was yesterday. I was glued to the TV! 80s were great on so many different levels. Sports, music, TV, movies, etc.
Wish I could go back and experience the 80s again.

Laker fan for life here. Videos like these give me the chills. Thanks for the vid...
The lakers camera man did a good job guarding the inbounds pass while the ball boy really put pressure on the Pistons. Just like Riley drew it up.
OMG! I've seen this game many times already but every time I see that last play(or ATTEMPT at a last play), it's just jaw dropping! Can you imagine anything like that happening today? Hell no! Although, it seems like years since a Finals have ever come literally to a LAST play; Game 7, one possession game, two seconds left in the season. Wow.
Isiah would've got the ball with less than a second to shoot and would have had NO change of scoring. Plus factor is all the dirty fouls Detroit committed that were not called and this game is not as close as one would think
35 years tonight. wow. Still remember watching this game and got NERRRRVIOUS when Laimbeer hit that DEEP 3. Game ended and I remember calling my friend who like me was a huge Lakers fan living in Boston. RIP Cynthia. Lakers Forever.
June 21, 1988---my greatest moment as a Lakers' fan!
THE 1980'S WAS THE BEST DECADE EVER FOR THE NBA....
wow this is like my earliest childhood memory ever
This series is almost eerily similar to the 2010 Finals. Down 3-2 and coming back winning a last-second game 7. The 5th title of the decade, a repeat. Awesome!
True!!!
Completely remember watching this and being mad because it was only a three point game and the crowd was on the court. Always loved the scene of crowds on the court or field. But not this time, was a big Pistons fan back then.
This was the golden time of being a Lakers' fan...
2000's were, and now is as well (im assuming we 3peat)
@@splashnskillz37 You didn't even repeat, and most people don't even count that bogus title in "The Bubble".
@@susanstamboulian646 it still was one of the most impressive titles overall, cry about it
@@susanstamboulian646 a ring is a ring doesn't matter if it's the bubble or not people just get all butthurt about it
simply amazing, today there isn' t the ritual of the playground invasion.... i miss it so much!
Couldn't agree more I remember watching this entire series as a nine year old and it still brings a smile to my face 24 years later, the only thing that came close to matching this for me as a Lakers fan was watching 2010 NBA Finals Game 7 finally beating the hated Celtics!
There's a difference between rushing the court when the game is over, and rushing the court when there's 2 seconds left and only a 3 point game
The Pistons' last playoff series loss until the 1991 NBA Eastern Conference Finals against the Chicago Bulls.
Wooow jaw dropping on that last play, crazy... damn
True!!!!
Lambier's 3pt was insane. But unfortunately they couldn't go back on defense.
How did they EVER allow fans to rush the court like that. My goodness, how dangerous...
Something you don't see in today's game
"The band is on the field!!! The band is on the field!!!" People from California in the 80s are funny...lol.
The last hurrah for Showtime, and what a hurrah it was!
What a strange ending. Detroit never had a fair shot to inbound the ball an attempt and game-tying three point shot. The refs must’ve been too intimidated by the crowd to do anything.
Its called bullshit
It's not that people have always been upset that the fans rushed the court....it was that they were on the court including the cameramen and Lakers bench with 2 seconds left. But up until 1988 fans were always allowed to rush onto the court and touch the players after each big game. It was different times for years, sometimes violence would happen....but for a very long time they allowed the fans to come onto the floor the split second things ended
They didn't get "robbed". That last bit was extremely unfair but they surely didn't get robbed.
Other people being on the court alone is enough to redo the final play of the game.
Now you know.
The lakers have such a beautiful history tho
This was no more a fix than when all the band members were on the court. There was mass confusion and the Lakers left the court quite quickly
Not a Pistons fan, you still have to call the foul. You can't judge fouls based off the other teams chance of winning. You have to call the fouls and they also should of called something on the Lakers bench for storming the court with two seconds left in the game. The Pistons could done a long shot from half court or completed a successful pass and hit a three.
WTF? Crowd invading the court before the game is over, this is a third world behaviour.
From your name you should be used to it
It was a different time mate.
Cocaine was a he'll of a drug especially in 1980's LA
is it just me or did the official actually blow a whistle on magic at 2:07 that no one noticed?
Guys, isn't it possible that when Magic shoved Isiah at the end he was fouling him to stop him from taking that 3? Lakers were up by three, and fouling him would've basically ended the game.
Should have put two seconds left on the clock and called a Technical on the Lakers bench.
And the cameraman that was literally guarding Lambeer’s inbounds pass.
It'll be interesting to see what Silver does once he gets in. First thing they need to address is the PED problem in the NBA.
That defenseof ours (Detroit pistons) was one of the best to ever do it. A healthy Isiah an we were winning it all.The pistons had to learn how to win.
you kidding me?on the laker halfcourt there were no people rushing, only after the last second...
@bgiles26 The Pistons won back-to-back championships the following two seasons,so it's not as if they dwelled on this too long.
I think the Lakers were playing 50-on-5 on that last possession?
2:08 Early early early childhood memory
It doesn't matter that the chance was low, they should have been given the chance. They basically just stopped the game with 2 seconds left and decided it was over.
June 21st 1988, my 10th birthday
You're right, it seems like he just grabbed the ball.
You're wrong about the fans being on the court. Should we just allow fans on the court in random spots as long as they don't touch anyone? The fact that they are on the court alone is too much. Even if you just look at it mentally, the player will be rattled operating with camera men and fans acting as if the game is over.
@landrykkb True, but the summer of 1988 in the "D" was hot and long and the memory of the Pistons losing game 7 was hard for me to shake.
@MrSlik25 For years, I replayed the final seconds over and over. What if Isiah had attempted a 3 and made it. Would have made an interesting overtime. However, I came to the conclusion that Magic fouled Isiah but Isiah was only getting two free throws and since there was no time remaining, the Lakers would have still won the championship by 1 point. So the referees were like "why bother"
Crazy! All the refs had to do was blow their whistle and make everyone get off the court. Instead they just let it go. There's camera men on the court before Laimbeer even imbounds the ball. I am a Lakers fan and have been for 35 years but still refs need to have control.
Thankfully, you will never see fans storm the court or the field in any major sporting event ever again (except in college where students are dumb enough to know better). You thank the beauty that is the video replay scoreboards and expansion of security officials in predominantly professional sports stadiums and arenas.
The whistle should have blown as soon as people started storming the court. And as for Isiah not being fouled, I'm not sure what you're watching but he gets knocked backwards on his ass after Magic pushes him.
I hated the Pistons growing up. But I have to say, if Isiah doesn't hurt his ankle, they win the title this year.
He was still ballin he had 25 pts in a quarter with that hurt ankle in game 6
1) yes the people should not be on the court. 2) The ball was loose and Magic has just as much right to contest it as Thomas. It looks bad on this low quality video, but it was not even close to a foul. The game was not affected by either. Lakers win, nuff said.
you wanna know why is wasn't called? cause if they call it, he only gets two shots. unless he misses the second and the pistons get the rebound, it's a moot point. just like magic rolling the ball down the court in the closing seconds of the 91' WCF, him fouling isiah with 2 seconds to go in the game 7 is ingenious. he know they weren't gonna call it since it would've been too late, so why not do it?
Then who is #11 in the video for Detroit?
Isiah came back and tried to play the final possessions of the game.
And you gotta give Stern credit, at least now when people say the Finals is rigged, the losing team shoots more FTs than the winning team, and the controversial Game 6 has the controversy in overtime, after the Spurs had multiple chances to win.
How the hell did the refs allow people in the middle of the court during the last possession. And then seeing Magic clearly throw Isiah to the ground? What a bunch of bullshit.
@SNL76years That ending was definetly questionable...And the three Laimbeer hit with 4 seconds was huge!!! if they dont give up that layup at the end they have a huge chance to win!!!
25 years ago...today
@bgiles26 I don't doubt most Piston fans in Detroit that summer were outraged, however.
Jeez, Isiah got dropped at 2:05
What, a foul with two free throws here would not have been moot. If there was going to be 2 seconds on the clock and they were going to the line, The Pistons would have had a pretty good chance to win or tie the game. Perhaps more importantly, the Lakers had so many men on the floor at the end, that should have been called.
Thomas was injured and was not playing .. Wrong! And if the game isnt over, a TO should have been called on the home team.... Stern cheated then just as he does with the C-Heat in 2012 and 2013.
This is a travesty. I will point out that Magic's foul on Isiah would have only been a 2 shot foul, so the Pistons would still have needed a minor miracle to tie it. However, without 200 fans on the court, the inbounds play might have unfolded differently. I hate crap like this.
The Pistons weren't supposed to win bk then THE NBA hated them. Game 6 phantom call on Laimbeer and that crowd showed ypu what it was.
If that was the case, then they would have lost in 1989 as well, but they won it then.
Okay, calm down. That wasn't a fucking throw, he grabbed the ball.
Magic STOLE the fuckin ball from Isiah clean even with people on the court and 2 seconds left. Lakers were going to win regardless of the fans rushing the court.
This was the last great game of the old NBA. Fans on the court before the buzzer, totally swarming after. We know how many techs weren't called and the insane prison yard physical play of Detroit. Lakers overcame it all with skill & style & really were the team of the 80's.
2:02🤯🤯 look at the Lakers player and the coaching staff on the floor🤯🤯 ! That's 100% a technical foul a 100 out of 100 times!! Joe Dumars would hit that technical free throw. The Pistons would be down by 2 with possession and they would be taking the ball out on their side of the floor! The NBA make sure that the Pistons took a l in that series. And don't get me started on game 6 and that atrocious fake rigged foul call Palmdale and beer that would have clinched the championship in game 6! 🤬
yeah and im not a pistons fan but that game could have gon to overtime
what a bunch of whiners. The Pistons didn't have any timeouts, so it would have been unfair to give them one. The clock ran out, the game was not going to OT. The Lakers won and to say Stern gave it them is ridiculous. Calls happen both ways in a series.
There was still 2 seconds left, and people were rushin the court! Pistons didn't get a fair shot at the end.
lmao and probably Isiah Thomas too
Yo honestly I'm a bulls and lakers fan, but I'm pretty sure you can't run on the court with two seconds left and I'm pretty sure Thomas got fouled by magic.
austin78993 this was back in the 80s, it was more laid back without any crying babies that come up with excuses
+austin78993 Even if he was...you get two shots. Even on a 3 pt attempt back then.
magic stole the ball
You also fucking realize the game would at the most go into OT?
Seriously? Homer much? That was obviously a foul and there should definitely not have been anyone on the court. The game should have been stopped to get the fans off the court.
No .. they did not win .. it was gifted courtesy of David Stern ..
thumbs up if... SIMMONS
A couple of observations:
1. AC Green is a fool. Run out the clock, dummy!
2. Pistons needed a three to tie, so why are delusional Pistons fans whining about the no-call on Magic? Even if Isiah gets the call, that only nets two foul shots. He would have to intentionally miss, and hope for a miracle tip in with one second left...a play that works like never. Shaddup!
Of course they used to do it. But it was still against the rules. Rigged-BA..
the 3 pt line looks farther at the top of the key back then, then it is today. what a 3 by laimbeer, 30 footer. the fans on the court to celebrate, when it was ok to do so. nowadays everyone is all paranoid. let the fans enjoy. LA and Detroit flopped title yrs. imo. the pistons in the 88 finals were better and the lakers were the better team in 89, but scott and magic got hurt and Detroit swept. kareem bailed LA out in game 6 in 88. but it evened out since they both won. is that skip bayless at 2:45? ugh and yeah, none of this wimpy stuff wearing big goggles cuz players today are afraid of the champagne ;)
The last 20 seconds sums up the NBA....What a joke! That's why the NBA is unwatchable...just like what happened in Game 7 in 2010
As if we needed another reason to hate Laker fans....
1) Chance of scoring a 3 pointer fullcourt w/ :02, less than 2%. The people didn't affect the play but the ref should've stopped it. 2) Magic stole the ball. he was stationary and isiah ran into him chasing the pass...therefore, the only possible foul is an offensive foul. now you know.
SIMMONS
What a bunch of horse manure .. Stern and his refs are corrupt as hades ..
Because they're not a shit organization like the Pistons.
I was happy when I heard Magic Johnson had HIV, after knowing he cheated to win this game.
How'd he cheat?
you my friend are an idiot
There 2 seconds left and people were already rushing on the court, if it wasn't for the fans, pistons would of at least a shot of tying the game. So much BS in here
