The Fujifilm X-H2s is a pretty exciting new camera with a some incredible paper specs. I wanted to see how it compared to my Canon R6 to see if it could replace that camera for video work.
This is the first time I have hit record on the fuji XH2s although I have owned other fuji cameras for vide. I've used my R6 alongside the Canon R5, Canon R5C among others over the last two years as my main B-Roll camera.

I was in this same boat. I owned and X-T4 and an R6 at the same time. I started really liking the work flow/design/quality/affordability of the X-T4, but it just wasnt quite enough for me to make a full switch. However after obtaining my X-H2s, it was quite an easy descision for me to make a full jump, and I sold the R6, and now use X-H2s and X-T4.
I have to agree for video! Stills aren’t stacking up as well for me but I’m think my XH2s has some sensor issues.
I’m a mostly happy X-T4 owner that uses it both for video and stills. I’ve tried the XH2S and it’s a huge step up in autofocus for Fuji (it basically brings it close to Canon/Sony)
In this situation the XH2s performed slightly better than the canon R6 👍🏻
@@bytomw for video yes, but for stills it can't compete with a full frame camera.
I agree but not because of the autofocus. The camera easily matches the R6 in performance… although the R6 resolves more detail despite its lower resolution.
Thank you for the work on this Tom. Just the X-H2Ss video I've been waiting for. I do a lot of talking head work and rely on AF - which wasn't capable enough on my two X-H1s, which I sold last year and have been shooting Canon since then. It was especially helpful that you shot LOG on both, and swapped angles for comparison. Excellent work. I've subscribed and look forward to more X-H2s coverage.

I still wouldn’t ask it to find a face in a crowd but in situations like that manual focus or single shot has to be the answer.

It’s very surprising so far. I wasn’t really expecting it to perform this well in a very hands off focus situation.
It’s honestly making me wonder if I can replace my canons with these for video and forget worrying about overheating (although I haven’t had many issues with that)

Thanks for the kind words. Honestly I just wanted to test this for my own use. The R6 is my preferred image from canon and this is a common lighting situation for me. It’s not an extensive test but it’s my main use case.

Anytime! I’m not about resolution for it’s own sake. If a customer isn’t viewing an image at 200% I don’t see why I should test it at 200%!

Your color grading is very consistent. The results from both cameras are great. I see both camera focus on your hands whenever you put them out forward and I guess it is because of your setting, for both cameras. I wonder why though. I don't have that sensitivity with my X-S10.
This was literally the first clips I recorded out of the box so the Fuji had 0 customisation yet. It was set to the wise focus mode only so it pretty much just chose the closest thing to the camera.
The second I tuned on eye AF and face tracking it was stuck to me like glue. The canon missed much more often than the Fuji in that situation.

It's been happening to my R5 and R6 a lot since they added the Clog3 update. I'm not sure if it's related. That said my R6 came back from service with a clean bill of health so it's working as intended.
The fuji was absolutely stickier in this situation with the same settings.

Hey Tom! I just watched that podcast You did yesterday, good stuff! I have the XH2S and the 33mm as well. What do you think of the dynamic range in photos? My experience is there’s more dynamic range over the XT3 and it seems to protect the highlights more and the shadows are more recoverable. The autofocus is so amazing on this camera and the final output is really awesome. Fuji nailed it! :)

Nice comparison and overview. I look forward to you comparing the photo image quality of both cameras. I really want to know what the subject detection AF is like on the XH2s, particularly for birds-and does it compare well with the Canon R6?
I'm happy to help. That said I never shoot birds. it's likely the photo testing will be more portrait, lifestyle related that anything else.

Thanks for the kind words. I think these new lenses are pretty great. I used the 35mm 1.4 in the past and honestly felt it was ok for video but nothing stellar.
I love my XT3 can’t wait to get my hands on the XH2S can’t say I wasn’t eyeing Sony and canon while waiting to see if Fuji would ever come close to this
Honestly it’s a huge improvement. I have used an XT3 and XT4 in the past. This is a step above.
At least with the new LM primes it’s more consistent than the canon out of the box.
Cool test. Possibly, in order to extract significantly more dynamic range from either, a color space conversion in Resolve will be more effective than a LUT to Rec.709 with a look.
But both worked pretty well in your test with pleasing results.
You’re likely right. That said this result is exactly what I’m after! The Fuji was much flatter than this after the colour space transform but I prefer a deeper black in my image so I set a lower black point to add contrast.

@@robmcd ah yeah I just looked at the F-Log datasheet and its primaries (color gamut) are the same as BT.2020.

I'm using an R3 and I also shot feature films in R5 RAW. I am hesitant to use Fuji's 10-bit Flog2 because of 12-bit RAW. But Flog2 looks like Clog2. It would be nice to be able to overcome the difference between 10Bit and 12Bit. (I'm not going to use an external recorder.) The skin tone definitely looks like Fuji. The dynamic range looks good too. Above all, I think that Tom Wright's color grading is a bit similar to that of Fuji, so I think it suits Fuji well. I've always only used Canon, but these days, I've come to realize that color grading makes it look like Fuji.
Q: It is said that film simulation cannot be used with Flog2. So, does film simulation have a very small dynamic range? Is there any way to use film simulation while writing Flog2? Or can't we just make the DR high while using film simulation? (This is Google Translate. :w)
I personally try to make my video look similar to my stills work and that’s heavily influenced by Kodak Portrait 400 scanned on a Fuji scanner so without a doubt I’m try to get a particular look.
That said the Canon R6 actually needed less work to get there. It has a really pleasing mid range boost I love. The Fuji’s colour was amazing out of camera and every bit as nice as the canon but because Flog2 is so flat it took more work to get the contrast feeling natural.
If you want a look out of camera you can set the camera to DR400 that give’s equivalent dynamic range to Flog converted to 709 but I haven’t tested it against Flog2
Thanks for sharing this. As a Fuji owner I can say that Fuji handles the talking head scenario in terms of autofocus quite well. I’m interested to know what you think of the autofocus in more documentary type filming where you are behind the camera filming others in real world situations.
That’s the next test on my list for sure. I wanted to get some more time in with the system before sharing they type of footage.
Are there any specific situations/focus modes you’d like me to look at?
@@bytomw I have seen both on X-T30 and X-T3 (and I've heard on X-T4) that the eye focus can miss on several shots with model and camera fixed. So most pictures are spot on - whereas some are out of focus. Plenty of light and consistent settings. Really annoying.
to wich extent can you compensate brightness with the shutter speed when filming?
flog 1 has a base iso of 640. flog 2 1250
An awful lot. Typically for 25p video I'd shoot at 1/50. in this case it was nearer to 1/400.
Typically I'd us a Variable ND filter over Shutter speed but I didn't have one for the 33mm 1.4 as yet.
@@bytomw Wich bad consequence s does it have to use a 1/400 shutter speed? at least, I didn't see any in the footage
It makes each Frame look sharper and that can give a more a bit of a "stutter" to each frame. Motion blur from using a slower shutter speed smooths out motion.
That said I'm personally not very sensitive to it. I don't mind cranking the shutter speed if I need to.

I learned from shooting Sony a while back specs aren’t everything. You need to find a camera that makes the image you like. No amount of features will make up for colour you hate.
Youve color matched the footage from fuji and Canon really well.
Was that hard to achieve? Any tips?
Honestly it wasn’t to bad. I just applied the rec709 LUT for the canon and corrected to taste.
Once I had done that I applied the Flog2 - Eterna LUT and adjusted it to match the canon.
The last step was just making sure the WB was consistent between cameras.
It was much easier to match the Fuji to the canon because the Flog2 seemed more flexible to edit.

How did you get on with stills between the Canon and Fuji?
Just finished taking the stills. (I had a bad sensor on my first XH2s so had to get a replacement before testing)
X-H2S is a monster. Onc3 you enabled eye detect it was game over. Thanks for this test.
The Fuji is really impressive for sure! I couldn’t believe how well it performed without the EYE AF.
With it on it was glued to my eye.
@@bytomw Yes, I've considered the R5/6 the gold standard for good enough AF, it looks like Fuji matches and in some situations exceeds it. The few areas some reviewers find it falls short are not things that I shoot, so I'll either move to the X-H2S or one of the smaller/cheaper options when they hit. Trying not to let the GAS get me.
I'm really liking the fuji look. With a speed booster this is definitely gonna look even better.

Sadly it’s been put on hold. My copy of the XH2s had a bunch of dead pixels on the sensor.
I can say that the RF lenses on the canon Resolve way more detail than the LM lenses on the Fuji.
In practice I got more detail from my R6 even though it had a lower resolution sensor than the Fuji.
@@bytomw Ok, so 1. dead pixels is not a good sign about sensor quality and 2. better resolution with the R6. So 3. do you think it comes from the sensor size, the sensor quality, or the lenses (LM is about the motor of the AF I think not the image quality)?

As a pro R6 user tempted by the XH2S this video is right up my alley! I'm actually quite surprised how similar/close the image looks, even as far as color science. Don't think I could retire the R6 just yet, love my EF/RF glass (also proud owner of the 50mm F1.2) and for stills full frame is the look I prefer but for video, XH2S could become an A cam. The ProRes & 6K Open Gate mode is what really excites me.
I’m with you for the same reasons. I love my canons but this offers an awful lot more function for video.
I’ll say this though. The canon is still a better stills body despite the lower resolution.
I have an R5 and the RF 50 1.2, I think I could be happy with the EF 50 1.2 speed boosted to the XH2S. I’ve got the XT4 and it’s my go-to if I don’t need perfect autofocus… but I’m thinking the XH2S could be an awesome blend of the XT4, the R5 and the A9.
Very interesting test, I love both cameras for different reasons, on the side angle, I liked the R6 better, yes the Fuji seems to have more DR and in theory it does, but there's something pleasing about the way the Canon renders those highlights on the side profile, I don't know, might be the contrast but it looks better to my eyes, and as for headshots the Highlight roll off on the fuji is very nice, it looked better for me, that Fuji looks very attractive.
I'm a Panasonic video shooter myself and I love the look I get, my main camera being the GH6, its a beast but I wonder if the DR boost on my camera stacks up to the XH2s, oh and I use Canon RP for stills, for that main purpose, that camera is a Steal !

I think you hit the nail on the head.
On paper the R6 is way worse than the R5C but honestly I prefer the image from the R6 for exactly the same reason (despite it being 1/2 the cost).
Canon mirrorless cameras might have “poor” dynamic range but they make up for it by being smart about how they use it. I can apply a 709 LUT and have an image that’s already solid with 0 work.
The XH2s looks different but I honestly like them both as much as each other.
The aim here was to get the flexibility to run long when I needed it and keep the colour and contrast I enjoy (or at least get close).
The GH6 has so many strengths. I would have to get hands on time with something else to really see if it was worth the loss of ease of use if I was coming from that body.
@@bytomw well I agree with you, the R6 provides that fast workflow.
And yeah the GH6 is awesome for what it is, coming from something like the Sony A7SIII that gives a great image, it lacks in so many departments that the GH6 doesn’t, and looking at the image and DR, I don’t miss the Sony at all, maybe the autofocus, a little, but that’s it.
But that Fuji, looks like an APSC GH6 in most ways, in terms of stills, it’s gonna be a hard battle between that and the R6, because in that department Canon is hard to beat, my RP takes better detailed stills than my GH6.

Have you tried the latest Nikon cameras? The Z8 is perfect I think. It could be great to see your opinion based on your criteria in comparison with the Fuji. The Nikon colors and overall rendering surprised me, i thought it could be no more than a rebadged Sony, but the colors were much better and the files were lovely to edit (photography). In video its better to work in log or in normal flat peofile with the sharpening down a bit or more than a bit, but it's about your taste.
I haven’t yet, but I have had a few students that shoot with the Z7ii generation cameras and the files have been lovely.

Why did you have eye autofocus switched Off for the Fuji - and switched On for canon? Seems like that invalidates the autofocus comparison???
Hi Kevin, if you keep watching the video I activate the eye AF in the 2nd half of the video.
On past Fujifilm cameras the tracking features made the focus hunt more than with them disabled so I wanted to test both with and without eye AF to see the difference.
The videos and photos Ive seen so far from the HH2s SOOC have been really nice. See John Branch latests videos. Im a Nikon shooter that was interested in the new R7 but this new Fuji really has meek thinking. Only thing I don't know is what the IBIS is like.
John is fantastic. His work is really cool. I watched his video the other day too and I can highly recommend it.
It's worth mentioning the R7 is at a much more affordable price point (although canon doesn't have good quality APS-C lenses for RF mount yet)
Why didn't you switch the eye detect on for the Fuji for a more consistent comparison?

It's still a good question, I had it turned off because on past fuji cameras the face tracking focus actually made the camera hunt more than when it was off.
I wanted to see if that was still the case here so I did some A-B testing with and without tracking. I was really impressed with the results from the fuji!
Good video. Good colors! I use an R6 and an XT-3. Of course I cannot compare video AF of the XH2S with the XT3. I didn't have the opportunity to use it but I know it's another league. That said, I set the AF with eye detection and 'Movie Servo AF Track Sens' set to -3 (in AF menu / 3). That alouds me to move the hands freely without distracting the focus on the eyes. Probably you had to set the camera AF that way. The R6 AF sticks to the eye all the time avoiding obstacles and on the other hand I also love Fuji colors without Log, recording in Eterna and Classic Chrome. What's true is that R6 have serious issues with moiré caused by line patterns on some fabrics, easy to solve on stills but not on video.

I've run into the FPN issue on the R6 as well, something that isn't well documented - the CLOG3 update on the R6 mark 1 is not preferred for low light indoor settings where you do not have clipped highlights. The extra highlight detail is pulled from 1 or 2 stops from the shadows, which are intended to be pulled down in post. You will see FPN noise in the shadows for a scene like this. CLOG1 is typically superior when shooting indoors, as any non-clipped highlight information is wasted with CLOG3. If you compare CLOG1 to CLOG3 side by side in a dark room with no clipped highlights, CLOG1 is about 2 stops less noise in the shadows, with no FPN. Figuring this out really helped me adjust the R6 appropriately for the environment.
Solid advice for sure.
since you are one of the first who has a production model fuji, can you do some more comparison tests vs the R6?
some ISO range shots, to see noise difference, some low light stuff, a walking shot vlogging to test ibis on both cameras and compare them side by side if possible.
Also some 4K quality tests in the different modes punched into 300%

I’m trying to make these videos based on my actual workflow/practice so that these videos can help me make a choice for my real work.
Honestly I don’t use these cameras above base ISO, vlog or ever punch in to that extent. So it’s unlikely I’d have a need to do those tests. If I do find a real world situation that I might use those features in I’ll be sure to share.
I do use the camera hand held on a regular basis though so I’m happy to test the IBIS for hand held shots and sequences.
The issue then becomes keeping things consistent enough to compare them side by side.
@@bytomw I get what you are saying. I don't drive cars at 200mph either but when you buy a new one it's good to know the top speed. For test purposes you should see what's in the box and how it preforms!

I got my XH2S a couple of days ago and am blown away by the AF and IBIS compared to my XT4.

but with the subject sitting in a fixed position, i think it indeed wouldnt be much problematic for fuji to keep af (and in such case, manual focus is of course more suited, and so af reliability wouldnt be so important). the better test is the tracking test: moving around (preferably with other people in the frame), which one keeps af on you better? i would think that that is what people look for when looking at af.
I see what your saying but this situation is pretty typical for me. I’m often conducting an interview and have to leave at least one camera unattended. I made this for my own use first and posted it incase anyone else would benefit.
This is the main situation I would use AF tracking. If I’m operating the camera I either manual focus or have much more control and use a single focus point, I wouldn’t trust any camera to automatically pick the face I want out of the crowd.
@@bytomw but through the title you implied xh2s might have better af than r6. u used one scenario (which is a common scenario for you). the title should have implied or said that its a fixed interview scenario. title was kinda deceiving, suggesting that overall af could be superior, when there was no overall comparison, just one use-scenario (which is not much af needing anyway)
The hand movement pointing to the cameras triggers auto focusing differently on both cameras and it seems the Fuji takes a bit more time to decide to focus the hand. But at the same time you’re moving them differently on both so they were not ideal conditions on both. But the Fuji focuses faster and more discreetly. I does seem the Fuji is a bit more greenish in the dark parts. But great comparison. 👌🏻👌🏻
That’s absolutely true. By the end of the test the Fuji was much much more reliable but even with eye detection off at the 1st half of the video the Fuji was just as usable a the canon.
If you tweak the canon AF settings you can get them pretty close 👍🏻
Brother it is hard, very hard to see a difference, the looks (their signatures) are there. However the techs are very on par (giving your chosen settings for your needs). So all comes to price!
Absolutely. You’d happily use either. It comes down to preference (and potentially the stills performance) 👍🏻
would've loved to see these cameras in more demanding scenarios, but I was surprised that the R6 missed more often than the fuji when Eye AF was on! Really interesting results, and might be a possible win for fuji!
That’s gonna happen for sure. I literally only recorded these two clips when I posted this. Interviews are a staple for me, so seeing how they work unassisted was important.
The fuji without eye AF on was slightly less consistent than the R6 with eye AF on.
When I turned on eye AF on the fujifilm, or didn’t miss focus once. I was really impressed.
Take not I am using a LM lens on the fuji so it’s the most up to date focusing motors in that lens.
@@bytomw yeah but.. drawing a conclusion based on only this rather easy scenario and making a video suggesting fuji might be better with af than canon... only on one scenario...

This is the situation I rely on autofocus the most. In other situations I tend to manually focus or use AF to acquire focus and monitor it closely as I shoot.
I get if this isn't enough for you and I'm not saying it should be.
This is how I use my cameras and the fuji does well here.
I'll be doing more testing.
It's much more flexible than the Canon but honestly there is a point where more isn't going to help.
The canon has always looked good to my eyes and anything in excess of that was a bonus.
There is a lot more room to adjust the footage with the fuji.
So much so I couldn't make the canon match the fuji but I could make the fuji match the canon.

Which firmware did you use on the Fuji?
Allow me to report the following here: I installed Fuji firmware update on my newly received H2S this morning and it's a nightmare. Yesterday while testing eye/object detection I was more than impressed of Fujis AF. This is gone with V1.02 firmware.
BETTER TO NOT INSTALL !!!
I didn’t update the firmware so it was exactly as the cameras shipped.
I can say I had to return mine. There are a bunch of dead pixels on the sensor that show up in the raw files.

Mainly because of the sensor issue. But outside of that the Canon also resolves more detail than the Fuji… even though the canon is only 20mp and the Fuji is 26.
Why would you have eye AF turned on for the Canon but not the Fuji? Makes it hard to compare AF.
The 2nd half of the video has eye AF on for the Fuji.
The Fuji cameras I used in the past where much worse when I added face/eye detection in video. I wanted to be able to mentally compare with and without eye AF.
Long story short in this situation the Fuji is similar to the canon with eyeAF on without any tracking features turned on. When you turn on the eye AF the Fuji is much more consistent and more sticky than the canon.

The lens cost on the Fuji was 1/3 the price of Canon RF lens for a similar quality weather sealed lens.
That’s something I love about Fuji. I just wish they made faster lenses. I love the Canon RF 50mm at 1.2 for portraits. It’s stunning.
A 33mm F1 would be an instant buy for me.

Fujifilm does NOT make any Full Frame lens. How do you compare a Made in China APSC camera and lens with a Made in Japan Full Frame Camera and lens based on price?

Real world test please, like going around town with the xh2s
This is my real world use case. Video for me is mainly interview setups just like this.
The reported dynamic range of the R6 varies depending on what site you refer to. Cined give it a poor score but I think that was prior to the CLOG update. DXO rate it at 14.3 and photons to photons rate the R6 higher than the XH2s. I thought the FujiDR looked a bit better in your footage. I have an X100v and love it and would love the XH2s but I would use it for video and I don’t see any great lenses for outdoor nature video. The 16-55 2-8 has no stab, whereas RF 24-105L has stab, more reach, is sharper…. So I’m torn between the R6 with the RF24-105 and my other EF lenses or the Fuji XH2s which I’d prefer for dynamic range, battery life and Fuji colours, but more limited lens choice.
I had a similar problem finding good info.
The main struggle with Clog3 is getting a clean image with good dynamic range. If you’re willing to run some noise reduction the R6 was totally fine for me in almost every situation.

Then the Fuji wins hands down. I also can’t recommend the canon r6 for video anymore. After the last firmware update the camera overheats much much faster than it did on the 1.5 firmware.
If video is your only concern the XH2s is incredible.
If you want more depth of field control on your zoom get a sigma 18-35 1.8 and a fringer adapter.

I agree here. Like I said. The canon R6 has been my preferred look. It’s my fav image out of any camera.
It doesn’t have the flexibility of the Fuji but it just looks good right away.
Cranking your AF-C tracking up to 4 and your front\center bias to "Center" will cause that X-H2S to lock onto your eye like a starving mountain lion in a talking head scenario like this. The Flog1 option will also give you less noise in lower DR shooting scenes. Great comparison!

I think the only reason why the Canon might have looked sharper is that it had a sharper lens on it. Usually, Fuji's lenses are very sharp... but only a few are ideal for video at this time.
I think you’re right. You see this more in the stills, the R6 resolved much more detail than the XH2s despite having less resolution, the only think it could be is the lens performance.
That said I liked the character of the Fuji lens as much as the far more expensive canon lens.
One thing you'll find to invalidate the Fujifilm system is the lack of lenses made to work well for video.
How many lenes do you really need?
I had worries about that but so far these LM lenses seem to fix that issue (at least on this body).
I believe they have a full set between 16mm and 50mm with an F stop at 1.4

New 18, 23 and 33 are perfect video lenses. Viltrox 13 makes a Fuji attempt at the same focal length pointless. Then there's the 90mm F2 which has three linear motors and is a freak of nature.
testing the R6 vs the R7 makes more sence, since the same price bracket.
The R7 is about £1000 cheaper than both of these cameras and I’m sure it’s amazing value.
I LOVE Canon cameras and colors, but I've been considering a switch to Fuji just cuz i've never been able to grip the camera all that well. Cursed with these tiny ass hands and I can never comfortably hold a damn camera lol, hopefully the H2S isn't too big or I may even have to consider an X-T5 when it drops.
Honestly I think the R6 and R5 are a small step back from the original EOS R. that camera felt perfect in my hands.
This one is a little smaller in terms of the grip bit in no way tiny. The whole system weights so much less than the canon but much of that weight is in the lenses not the body.
I love how people compare a camera that is 2 years old and say look. This is way better. Pick up an canon R3. The canon R6 is a good camera. The fugi is as well.
There will never be a comparison that satisfies everyone and honestly this was a test for my own sake that I uploaded. I owned the R6 and wanted to see if this was an upgrade from that camera, if the R6II had existed when I made this video I would absolutely have tested that too.
As always my choices don't need to be anyone else's but I do my best to explain why I prefer something.

Fuji looks better - colors are a lot better!!! The skin tones seem to be much more accurate. The sharpness on the Canon may be because you are using a $2,500 lens vs. an $800 lens on the Fuji. Don't know. Could be.
If the Fuji system had a £2,500 50mm equivalent, I'd absolutely use it... but they don't. you can get the fuji to match the canon in sharpness with a little sharpening in Final Cut Pro.
But I agree with you on all the other points. The colours do look more natural on the fuji.
@@bytomw You could always try the Samyang 135mm F2 (manual lens but still) which is one of the sharpest lenses ever made (better than the Canon EF and similar to the Zeiss) and is available in both mounts.
The Fuji H2s is better, but you have to have the eye detect on. It will stick with you like super glue, and no hunt. The colors, especially skin tones, on the fuji are superior to the Canon. Try shooting in Classic Chrome or Astia -2/-2 settings.
You're so right. The Fuji gives the most beautiful skin tones and skin texture of any camera, better than Canon and FAR better than Sony.
But use the eye auto. It works better than the Canon.
That’s a pretty good summary of what we found from the 2nd half of this video.
The XT3 had issues with its subject tracking so I wanted to test the XH2s with and without to compare.
The canon is a great camera for AF but when following a person the Fuji was more consistent.
I don’t shoot video in full contrast profiles. All my work is shot in log if the canon has any 10 bit codec. I have shot eterna on the X100V though and enjoyed the results.
I like the image from the Fuji more for sure but honestly I’d take either the canon or this. They both look great.
(7:03) I wouldn't say nobody thought Fuji for video, there are plenty of people using the X-T4 or X-S10, and I say this as a Lumix GH5II user...
Only RUclips camera reviews are ultra finicky when it comes to what is a usable camera for content creation...

I'd say that's fair! I know lot's of people that use the XT3 too... thinking about it they also shot some scenes in "The Boys" on an XT3 if I remember right.
@@bytomw Actually, now that I think about it., we recently watched a movie with Owen Wilson and Jennifer Lopez, there’s a few scenes where the main character was followed around by an online content creator using a two handed stabilizer filming with a Fuji X-T3. I would not be surprised if that was the actual BTS rig for the production. It was also not the first time I had seen that…

Honestly I kind of like the level of noise in the image. It doesn't have a lot of colour in it, It's really not distracting to me at all.

Sadly I had to return the Fuji! My copy has a bunch of dead pixels. If I manage to get hold of another I’ll make sure to do the test 👍🏻

6k opengate, better than c70 with the same sensor size
Honestly I’d love to try the c70. It’s a stunning camera but I do love open gate on this Fuji.

Versus R6, the Fuji has better image, faster sensor, way better battery life,, more dynamic range, better formats, no record limits, better IBIS, costs way less, and doesn't overheat.
Versus the R5C, still better dynamic range, WAY better battery life, has IBIS, no dual system switching, faster/stacked sensor (albeit only APS-C), no noisy fan, full sized HDMI port, and it costs HALF the price (along with WAY cheaper lenses).
Also, Fuji is great with Kaizen, I bet they'll add some awesome features, especially putting that fast sensor and new CPU to use (4k 240? Internal RAW?) Anyway, unless you've got more $ than sense, the Fuji is the better choice here on almost every important metric.
I was nodding my head agreeing with you until your last sentence. Aside from being a crop sensor camera this is better than the R6,R5 and R5C however that’s not a small thing for stills.
There are lots of reasons to choose the canon mirrorless offerings but if you only shoot video I can’t make a good case for spending the extra unless you really want the look of a fast prime on a large format sensor.
If we are talking about firmware updates canon just launched their 1.6 firmware for the R5 and R3 and that removes overheating as a concern for my use case.
All that said if I only shot video I would be shooting with this camera. Because I’m hybrid I have to weigh the camera’s stills performance against the benefits for video.
The R6 still makes sense for someone that shoots 50/50 photo and video. The image is stunning for video and despite having fewer megapixels it resolves more detail with canon’s RF lenses than the XH2s does with the LM lenses when shooting stills. It comes down to what matters more to you as a business owner/creative.
@@bytomw Fair enough, but for photography, if we're mostly talking resolution, the R6 is only 20mp, so the Fuji still wins. I'd imagine all the DR and install image quality translates over to photo as well, along with much faster sensor. So it seems like the Fuji would still be better for photos than an R6?
Now the R5C is 45mp, which is nearly double the resolution of the Fuj, so if you need very high res/detail, yes, that's the way to go.....but for the extra $ of a single R5C, you could buy a whole other camera body (Fuji medium format GFX?) just for photos.
The full frame + fast prime lens thing is definitely nice. A speedbooster on the Fuj will get you some of the way there, and allow you to dabble on other lens ecosystems.
Sure, Canon may be better for some folks. And yes I wish Fuji had a full frame offering. But for most people, especially those just getting into photo/video who are not already invested in an ecosystem and who may not have an endless budget, Fuji is the clear winner.
I have had both in hand. The R6 resolves more detail than the XH2s despite being 6mp lower resolution.
I’m not sure if that’s an issue of lens design or sensor size but it’s the experience I have had. The Fuji looks great until you take a closer look at the detail in the files. If your work doesn’t require that or if you’re trying to emulate a 35mm film look I think the Fuji does amazingly well.
I do use an R5 as my main stills body for most jobs but if I short events more often I’d happily take the R6 as a main camera and have no problems.
In terms of budget at the time of writing this the Fuji costs more than the canon. The L lenses are another story though and if you want that insane detail I think the RF L lenses are a big part of why the R6 outperforms the XH2s.
But honestly I think we are splitting hairs. I love both for different reasons.
That said I do think canon still makes more sense if you are a truest hybrid photographer/videographer.
If you’re only video the Fuji is INCREDIBLE.
@Tom Wright are you using capture one for Fuji files? I’ve heard reports of much better files, netter details and color processing raw Fuji files with capture one over adobe apps
I have used both, C1 does a much much better job. But the Canon resolves more detail in both programmes.

It's worth remembering that the R6 will overheat and since the latest firmware update (the same one that gave my R5 basically unlimited recording) I can now only get 30 mins before the camera overheats...
Canon's focusing system will vary depending on the person's face. With your particular head and face, the focusing will not be as good as someone else with an objectively better structed head and face ratio, which is why it was missing focus in your test.

The canon af jumping is terrible on the latest cameras. Even nikon is better

Honestly it’s about the same with noise reduction at 0 on the Fuji… but I intentionally turned it off on the Fuji (-4 I think) to get a better idea of what it’s like out of the box.
I really like the noise in the XH2S, there is very little chroma noise compared to the canon.
This! Canon looks way better to my eyes. It has trouble with autofocus in clog with strongly backlighted subjects though, that is actually true. Fuji‘s autofocus would be a strong no go especially for talking head shots though. Almost every hand gesture made the Fuji loose its autofocus while using it as an A cam.
@@ElBoyoElectronico eye autofocus was not activated in the first place. And the R6 was doing the same, focusing on the hands
The canon has been causing me issues with focus since the Clog3 update in situations like this.
The 1st half of the video the fuji was set to wide AF with no Eye or Face tracking and the canon had those features on.
When you turn on eye and face detection on the fuji (the 2nd half of the video). It's stickier than the canon.
Only on paper. My XT4 on the video matches my R6 in noise. In fact, I like the noise pattern of Fuji way better than R6. Even in high iso, I have never applied noise reduction onto my fuji clips, but I sometimes do in R6. So if xh2s is better than xt4 in low light, that will be icing on the cake.
How are the Photographs? It seems that using a Camera to take Photographs is no longer worth a video's mention. its ridiculous. An IPHONE takes Videos that are equally as Good,, and thats a fact.
If this was true for video why would anyone ever use anything other than an iPhone… saying something is a fact does not make it so.
If you watch the video I tell you directly I was planning to test the stills now that I know that this camera would cut it for video.
My only pain point with the R6 was in video mode specifically and I have had 0 reason to look elsewhere for a stills camera. That said the video on the XH2s is so good that I would consider using it as a stills and video camera. But I need to do those tests before I can talk about it.
In the mean time I can highly recommend checking out John Branch and Reggie Ballesteros’ videos on the stills capabilities of this camera.
I have a rule, don't spend over 2,500 dollars on a aps-c sensor camera, don't care how new it is, other new cameras, full frame, can do the same.
What about the Black Magic Design URSA, RED Komodo or Arri Alexa 35?
They are all super 35 (aps-c) cameras.
I guess arri should just burn their Alexas lol
@@bytomw I'm speaking for average hobby photographers not going much into video genre. Sorry wasn't specific......I would recommend this camera in 5 yrs. Used, just my opinion like my previous comment, this Fuji XH2S is too expensive and don't like Fuji have no real justification for it. Like everything else in the world prices going up and imo Fuji is exploiting that, not far from their prices of their less expensive medium format 100mp digital sensor cameras. Sorry, I forgot this particular camera is geared in specializing video content than stills. .....Would still recommend wait until prices go down and in used.
