Personally I love getting ads for SHEIN and Temu because it means they wasted a little bit of money advertising to someone who will never buy from them😅 I like the irony of the Adsense going to sustainability creators
I'm plus sized and low income. Before I knew more, I purchased a few Shein basics. Now, I'm STILL buying cute plus size lower cost clothes but more ethically. Size and income really aren't an exuse. Lots of IRL thrift store searching, depop, poshmark, Facebook buy sell trade clothes groups. I can still find reaaonably priced clothes. Is it AS cheap? No, of course not, but you dont need a HUGE wardrobe. I repeat the same outfits nearly every week, or repeat the same items anyway because my closet isnt huge. It hasnt negatively impacted my life to just have less clothes. In fact, owning less in general is STILL cheaper than buying a big unnecessary clothing haul on Shein. You may have to wait longer, but clothes exist ethically for big women. I JUST got a super cute plaid skirt for fall for $12 (shipping included) from depop secondhand.
if you spend a 100 dollars a month on clothing you can save that money and buy good quality clothes instead. if you buy a very well made sweater (or good quality yarn to make it yourself) it will last you 30 years. the best styled people are the people who have owned their clothes for years. I am planning to knit/crochet a sweater every year, I need 5 sweaters so every sweater needs to last at least 5 years. if they last longer I will make a sweater for a loved one.
Thank you for this video! I am from one of the countries where clothing is manufactured and know people who work in the textile industry. So it always irks me when I see people claim they deserve cheap and cute clothes at the cost of those who make them. I completely understand people buying from ultra-fast fashion like Shein if they genuinely have no other options and everyone deserves to be adequately clothed. But clothes are a basic need and cute clothes aren't.
Perhaps some of us old people are simply tired of going in and out of a dozen stores to find something, have given up, and are turning to Shein or other online retailers, just a thought
I mean, I'm not particularly surprised. I'm in my mid twenties and none of the people I'm close buy from Shein. But I have had collegues and people older than me raving about it
Plus sized here. I don’t buy from Shein but will say in person thrift stores are mostly just depressing, and often it’s about Vinted for me. I think it’s worth talking about weight cycling as well caused by diet culture as that also create more need to acquire more things as so little clothing is made to be particularly adjustable any more. I have ended up with fast fashion bits because of that but I do at least try to wear them until they fall apart (then mend if I can) or they deeply don’t fit. But as diet culture provokes yoyoing in people, it is always going to cause a bunch of wardrobe churn for people
Now imagine that thrifting it's not a thing in my country, and if you find shops that do it, they're expensive as any fast fashion one and with pieces that are also fast fashion... While I don't condone its use, I can see how SheIn fills a gap in our local market, in the low income uneducated people that don't question where their clothing comes from...
I’m too poor to shop places like shein. I’ve heard of people not getting what the item was in the photo. Definitely can’t afford to buy something I might not wear. Also too poor to afford the “quality” or lack there of. I don’t have the time to be replacing the items at the level that poor quality requires ❤
Someone on my buy nothing group was giving away a portion of their Shein order. I was surprised at how many people wanted this clothing. I had the idea that wearing Shein was embarrassing, probably because I listen to sustainable videos and podcasts. Sadly it seems their green washing and other advertising is working. I own one Shein top that I thrifted, and that is the only way I would purchase this brand.
People LOVE to talk about shein and temu, and love to talk about how much they buy from it/ how “great” the clothes actually are 🙄 I have two coworkers (who both make more than me lol) who will ask me every time I’m wearing something cute (usually thrifted or depop) “oh is that from temu??” Like NO lol people get hyped over this cheap crap, I do not understand it at all.
To be honest, my flatmate shared a Shein skirt with me and the quality was excellent. We've been wearing it for 1 year now and it has been washed many many times... it's quick drying, not see through and with good stitching. It's repairable. First Shein thing I've ever worn, but, I can see why people would want it. It's a bad company but I can't deny this skirt goes with everything and we'll get years of wear from it.
I have one shirt from SHEIN, and I only have it because the Vinted seller didn't disclose that it was from SHEIN. (I think the brand was listed as "cool" or "emo" which aren't even real brands.) I still wear it, I like the design and it would be wasteful to not wear it after buying it, but I'll be more careful in future.
My ads were Marks and Spencer and some cat food. I have never owned a cat. I don't think the algorithms are working?? Really interesting video, thank you.
I bought a jumper from a charity shop the other week. I was really excited as I loved the colour and fit. Only after I got home did I realise it was originally from Shein. Bit disappointed as now thinking that it probably won't last very long due to the poor quality.
I've gotten a couple of second hand Shein items, and I've managed to make them last months of regular wear. Wash in garment bags on delicate and cold wash, and air dry, and you should be able to get a decent amount of wear out of it!
Don't worry- it actually might. My flatmate and I have been sharing and washing a Shein skirt for 1 year now, and it's got many years left, it's very well made. Occasionally there are well made items from there.
I did buy fast fashion (NEVER Shein though), and probably will again once a year maybe, but I am proud to say that rn I am wearing a sweater that I had for around 25 years, it still fits, fabric doesn't look too washed out or balling up and I wore it almost every winter! Don't know what sorcery it is, or maybe it's because in my house we are pretty good with the washing, seriously don't know. Bought it at the weekly market here in my little town in Italy.
As a plus size person, I don't shop shein. The majority of my clothes are thrifted, from FB marketplace, my local buy nothing group, or if I need new because I can't find it used, another online retailer or in store. I personally hate the feel of the majority of synthetic fibers and specifically look for natural fibers where I can. I do the same for both my kids, we very rarely buy them new clothing as I get the majority for free from my buy nothing group, or our friends whose kids are a few years older than ours.
Is it possible that shein ads are banned in some countries? I never see any shein ads at all, seriously. And when I visited my family, shein ad was the first thing that jumped on my screen when I turned on my RUclips ;o But I see temu ads everywhere on the other hand.
I think that must be the case! I get temu ads occasionally here, but not shein. However when I was in the UK recently the shein ads were in all of my apps suddenly!
Hi there Gittermary from Australia. On the subject of Shein, I hate & will not support them even though I am on a very low income. I am in my mid 50's & have spoken to many women my age & older that are constantly buying shein products because of how cheap they are. :/ I shop in thrift stores / ( opportunity shops )for everything & often moan out loud when I see Shein on the shelves & the other day while I was talking to one lady about how bad they were another women came up & butted in saying that she buys alot of clothes from Shein & love them & couldn'tsee anything wrong with them :/ 😅 she wouldn't accept what I was saying about the quality or the environmental impact of the product, Or that they paid unfair wages to the workers, so I just said well that's your choice but I wouldn't support them just to not cause an argument cause some people just don't care. 🙉😬😪
I’ve never bought from shein in my life and earn much less than 65k, but if I made that much I definitely wouldn’t be spending 100 a month on shein 😓. That probably gets you over 10 items of clothing from them & I refuse to believe people NEED 10 new pieces a month?! I probably buy 10 or less year 😅, even primark has better quality, I’m not condoning them but at least you can see & try it on & judge for yourself if it’ll hold up longer than a month.
Yep got not one but TWO ads for them 😭 I’ve started learning how to sew my own clothes so tired of them lmao (I’ve never bought there, but still I’m tired of even seeing them)
Especially on Shein, that's a difficult amount to reach 😂 Though it is an average, so it is highly influenced by extremes, especially people who do "$1000 Shein haul" videos every week. It's a common biais of averages, and there is almost no public knowledge about it because that's the kind of maths you don't learn until at least last year of high school (and not everyone learns it)
Who needs that much stuff _every month_? I have a baby who understandably grows like a weed but even I don't spend 100 a month on her clothes (I buy mostly second hand and I have a working washing machine).
As a low-income plus size person, I buy from thrift shops where I can, but I also make a lot of my own clothes from second hand garments. I use a bit of reconstruction to make them fit. I’d prefer to have less clothes than buy from Shein etc.
I'm also plus size and I shop at shein and I would LOVE to stop, truly but I can't buy anything in second hand (actually near me it's more like nothing) and the selection in stores is just... So so bad everything that ships to me is like crazy expensive or fast fashion. I hate this kind of videos honestly, because I would love to stop, but I can't have 1 skirt, 5 shirts and idk, I can't do laundry that often honestly 😅 because of lack of time and the laundry machine is 4€ per use sooooo... I'm rambeling. I try to be sustainable anywhere I can, but yeah, I still buy from shein from time to time
This is an amazing video!! You are a really inspiring creator, and have even inspired me to starting fazing plant based living into my life as a teenager living at home, so thank you so much :)

So the body shaming is very real in second hand stores. I have bought at shein because I was poor and needed to dress up for work. I don't buy any clothes anymore, because I found some plus size second hand alternatives. However. I still buy at chinese websites. My friend has a trinket shop ( jewelry, accesoiries and small decorative objects). She was panicking because her order for the new season got stuck in the Suez canal! So much for "buy local". What I do shop at chinese websites (as little as I can) : spools for my sewing machine, crochet hooks, knitting needles, embroidery hooks, things like that. There is no reason I would pay more for something that is made in China anyway . I don't buy textiles , thats for sure. But my craft supplies are very high quality. So I only partially agree.
I would argue, that sewing supplies are not really the same as fast fashion. There is a point to be made though about buying 'made in china' products in general, because of bad working conditions and human rights conditions. For example forced labour camps (like the re-education program of Uighurs) and the sponsoring of North Korea. But it's a little bit of different conversation from overconsumption specifically.
I have to share this here because I think you will understand my horror. I’ve never bought from Shein, though I will admit I love Zara Home (the quality is actually great, it’s very confusing). I don’t buy many clothes and I always buy higher quality with long term durability and use in mind. I don’t buy trends. Jup jup luckily i am free from shein mostly because i am plus sized and very skeptic from fast fashion for those sizes. (PS you left several takes in of one sentence about 12 min in, i thought my tv was lagging 😅 no biggie but maybe you want to check)
Whoever says that poor people need SHEIN are delusional in thinking a poor person could afford to gamble any amount of money on a) the item(s) matching the description and b) the item(s) surviving more than one wash cycle.
I think about this a lot. The cheap brands get a lot of critique, but the luxury brands are not necessarily better quality or produced under better working conditions, they just cost more because of a logo. But I suppose people buy fewer clothes if they are buying more expensive ones.
it’s the volume of shein that makes them worth talking more about 👀 but check the video I linked in the description about luxury goods, because I do talk about that as well
Personally I love getting ads for SHEIN and Temu because it means they wasted a little bit of money advertising to someone who will never buy from them😅 I like the irony of the Adsense going to sustainability creators
This is Algorithm poisoning, a very simple and effective tactic to make them lose money :)
I'm plus sized and low income. Before I knew more, I purchased a few Shein basics. Now, I'm STILL buying cute plus size lower cost clothes but more ethically. Size and income really aren't an exuse.

loved this video! Very nuanced issue for sure. I'm honestly shocked to hear the average shein shopper is over 30
"Average shopper" can be tricky. In theory it could be 3x 20 year olds and 1x70 year old. Making 32,5 the average
Perhaps some of us old people are simply tired of going in and out of a dozen stores to find something, have given up, and are turning to Shein or other online retailers, just a thought

My wife has taught herself to sew, so she can make awesome pieces for her plus size body, and I am in awe everytime!

Lmao!
Yes, Shein is SO animal friendly, they might even mail you a free pet scorpion, or some maggots with your order.
They just love the animals!
The 35-year-old-$100-shoppers are most likely the mums of young girls who demand new clothes every few weeks to keep up with trends.
I assume that is the average age of fashion influencers, who came up during the 2010s? Might be wrong, though.
I got a SHEIN ad in the middle of your video! Algorithm fail.
I bought a jumper from a charity shop the other week. I was really excited as I loved the colour and fit. Only after I got home did I realise it was originally from Shein. Bit disappointed as now thinking that it probably won't last very long due to the poor quality.

Thank you for calling Shein put again! Go girl! ❤
Absolutely love this, thank you for putting in the work to educate us ☀️

Ah, I have that same experience with some of my clothes!I also suspect that they were better made 25 years ago…. and made to last!

"Another pit of hell" instead of "another can of worms" is great, this will be added to my vocabulary from this day forwards.

Did not get an ad from Shein, but different fast fashion online store 🙈
can't run from them on youtube, but i actually blocked shein and temu on instagram because the ads just make me too sick xD
How did you do that?
You can block These ads with blocking their Accounts?
If you use Firefox with an ad blocker you get no ads on RUclips. ♥
Yep got not one but TWO ads for them 😭 I’ve started learning how to sew my own clothes so tired of them lmao (I’ve never bought there, but still I’m tired of even seeing them)
I spend between 300 and 400 a YEAR on clothes. Wdym the average Shein shopper is spending 100 a MONTH??
Especially on Shein, that's a difficult amount to reach 😂
Though it is an average, so it is highly influenced by extremes, especially people who do "$1000 Shein haul" videos every week. This is true the advert are crazy. I don't buy from these companies. But I still get adverts. Interesting.
I am quite plus sized, and when I was poor I had a very hard time finding clothes that fit me. As in, we could go to a place that distributed clothes for free to people who were poor enough. I could hardly ever find anything that even slightly fit me there, or in thrift stores (although at one time I found a colorwork knitted grandpa cardigan. It was only missing one button, and it fit me, and I've worn it for years). I never bought from shein, but on the other hand I have shopped fast fashion because it was all I could afford for basics. I can say I never bought from shein, but I'm not sure if the fast fashion 'textile supermarkets' I could afford back then are that much better.
Literally had a SHEIN add right before this 😂
I totally agree. You get what you pay for. I'm plus size and low income and I'd rather spend more on something that will last.
Plus sized, low income (disabled). Love Poshmark and thrifting. Also upcycling my clothes.
It's really sad how popular Shein is and how people don't realize the impact of buying this clothing. 😕
Also alot of the fast fashion company will send you there clothes. When you ordered from other companies. Ronwe there sister company. So you order from Ronwe you might get another company. So impact even worse.
Brilliant video thank you 🤩
As far as i know its very difficult to recycle polyester ? Can;t imagine them spending the money to do it if it is possible.
Their 11% are the sum of recycled material and forest-safe material (as far as I understood, that's mainly cellulose as raw material).
And it's "Shein branded products". One more limitation.
I’m finding so much SHEIN in thrift stores. The fabric and construction are so poor.
Shopping online is not sustainable because all the orders get on a plane/train/ship that actually produces emissions. The only sustainable method i think i can use is buying second hand . And that also applies for bigger and fashion brands ( IKEA recently apologised to people that worked mandatorily, i think they were prisoners.. and don't get me started with Dior)
Thank you
Aww, I thought shein had accidentally done something good :((( but they're just being shein.....
As a plus size creative person I have a few toughts on this . Altough shopping second hand is always my first choice, as a plus size person you almost always end up with nothing in thrift shops.
@raapyna8544 very true! However, its hard to know how you can ethically source those supplies . If in any way possible, I buy everything second hand.
lol what do people get with 100$ A MONTH i havent spent this ammount in my whole life
I have to share this here because I think you will understand my horror. I’ve never bought from Shein, though I will admit I love Zara Home (the quality is actually great, it’s very confusing). I don’t buy many clothes and I always buy higher quality with long term durability and use in mind. I don’t buy trends. BUT I was going to a last minute Halloween party last week where I wanted to look hot in front of a guy I like (single and dating in your 30s is NOT easy…). I agonized over it but decided to order a dress off Amazon with 2 day shipping (I’ve never bought clothes off Amazon before, and I just cancelled my prime account because of the Washington post not endorsing Kamala in the US. It’s a big deal). Anyways, the dress arrived and there was one singular longgggggg black human hair on the dress in the bag. I was so grossed out that I couldn’t wear the dress. Also it was so cheap I’ve never actually felt a product that cheap. This just hammers home the HUMANS on the other end of this supply chain.
Your video was followed by Temu add 🙄
Jup jup luckily i am free from shein mostly because i am plus sized and very skeptic from fast fashion for those sizes.
(PS you left several takes in of one sentence about 12 min in, i thought my tv was lagging 😅 no biggie but maybe you want to check)
Whoever says that poor people need SHEIN are delusional in thinking a poor person could afford to gamble any amount of money on a) the item(s) matching the description and b) the item(s) surviving more than one wash cycle.
But, why always Shein? And the Luxury brands? Balenciaga use polyester and no one talk about that 😅
Straw man argument. They are all bed yes, but SHEIN is quite literally the worst. The numbers show that.
I think about this a lot. The cheap brands get a lot of critique, but the luxury brands are not necessarily better quality or produced under better working conditions, they just cost more because of a logo. But I suppose people buy fewer clothes if they are buying more expensive ones.
it’s the volume of shein that makes them worth talking more about 👀 but check the video I linked in the description about luxury goods, because I do talk about that as well
It was a temu ad😭 idk why cause i dont buy thing from them 😅
