Man, Ari's timing has been incredible these past few weeks. If Kanye says some crazy shit you better believe Ari is about to drop something worth watching.
When the Grand Canyon came up (15:12), with the accompanying awe of how something so massive was the result of a relatively unexciting amount of water flowing over such a profound span of time... It reminded me of a similar but also very different awe. If you head towards Seattle from the Grand Coulee Dam, near Spokane, (near where Washington, Idaho, and Canada meet), you'll travel alongside and within the Grand Coulee itself; that's where I learned what a Coulee was, beyond a word in the name of a big dam. What I find so fascinating and equally profound is the difference between a canyon and a coulee. Where a canyon is cut slowly by glacial erosion, a coulee came into existence when some land feature, that had been functioning like a natural levee, suddenly gives way, allowing a truly enormous amount of rushing water to rapidly cut a big gouge (which you'd be hard pressed to tell apart from a canyon) into the landscape. I find it interesting to imagine it almost like different settings on sliders controlling the variables of water quantity, event duration, and the erosion speed, as derived from the other settings. Anyway, I also want to mention that Ari's new standup hour is _really_ good. I'm normally somewhat so-so on his material, but this new material, combined with a decent amount of autobiographical story, is up there with the best spoken word out there right now; think of the most recent recorded output from Bill Burr, Hasan Minhaj, Aziz Ansari, and a half dozen others I'm forgetting. Everyone is doing it, but that's because it can really be _phenomenal_ if done well by an insightful comic capable of relating some interesting life experiences.
