- After years of posting their lives publicly, what happens to influencers who are ready to get out of the game? When you are the product, what job do you move on to next? Do you put “influencer” on a resume? Stay Tuned spoke to a few former creators, Ingrid Nilsen and Lee Tilghman, about what led to their social media retirement, and what they’re doing now.

Ingrid & Luke Conard were the first to start Vlogmas, it was such an interesting yet magical time in content creation. Thank you for your contribution Ingrid.
Pretty obvious you don't use the term "influencer" on your resume. RUclipsrs can just put on their resume, "independent media producer", and when asked what that entails, you say you produced, wrote, edited, and starred in an online entertainment, news, or product review series. If the channel was large enough, yielded decent revenue and sponsorships, then you're no different than someone who just got off working for a Television studio. The platform doesn't have to be a stigma, if you have the talent and charisma to create media people want to watch, that's a useful skill set.
And what makes you think a former, highly successful youtuber wants to be an "employee?" (the sole purpose of a resume is to impress a boss or hiring manager). Successful youtubers are highly entrepreneurial and a resume is pretty much useless to them. Someone like Ingrid Nilson, as shown in this video, has nearly 4 million subscribers and easily made millions of dollars on RUclips. The video also explained what businesses she's opened since quitting RUclips.
Get over yourselves and just be happy for Ingrid and the others or just don't watch. I swear some of you just want to complain and be negative 🥴 i am very happy for Ingrid. ❤sweet girl don't let anyone bring you down. That's their sorry way but I am truly happy for any endeavor you choose. Be happy and always be yourself no matter what. I am a 68 year old nanny and proud of you 👏🎶🎼🎵🦋🌻🌻🌻

Ingrid was one of my fave youtubers since 2011. I really enjoyed her videos for make up, fashion, day-to-day, cleaning & organizing. I am happy that she's found something else that she loves but i do miss her videos!
i LOVED ingrid’s content. i remember looking up to her so much and hoping that when i was her age that i would be that mature and responsible and thriving with amazing people around me. it’s so good to see her again 🥺

She wasn't doing amazing as an influencer. She hated her life and wanted to get out. Therefore not doing good as an influencer. Influencer are as fake as it gets.

The thing that has always bothered me about the existence of ‘influencers’ is that it proves the existence of the easily-influenced, which turns out to be a frighteningly large number of people. Some creators really are experts in a particular subject, but others, well, aren’t. But the viewers too often don’t bother to differentiate. And when creating is driven by sponsorships, it sometimes gets even more sketchy. Looks like it’s got some potential downsides for the influencers too. I wish them well in their new endeavors. Respectfully submitted.
I can't fathom why anyone wants to sit around watching other people go about their daily routines.

@@rexx9496 I'm absolutely one of those people who love watching daily routines. Psychologically speaking, I think the enjoyment comes from wanting a form of escapism from one's own boring or stressful life, and at the same time still enjoying the simple domestic things that can be within it, like cooking a nice breakfast or taking a walk at sundown. I don't always have the time or energy for these activities, but finding a video of someone doing them offers some satisfaction, and depending on how they film it, can be very relaxing. It can also spark ideas of things to do, like a new workout, new recipe, new hobby, etc.
There is a loneliness epidemic going on as well and people might find comfort in watching videos like those. People who suffer with mental health issues might even find them motivating. People wouldn't watch them and they'd not be popular if they didn't fulfill some need in people.
Ingrid! I used watch Ingrid back in the day & was still subscribed to her when she made her final upload. I was actually thinking about her recently & I'm happy to see she's doing well
They speak like they were forced to share their lives… you chose to do it… made a lot of money doing it and stopped when you wanted because you made enough money! You retired early because you could! It’s ok to have a job that got you all that money fast and easy… you don’t need to convince the world you were suffering! Enjoy it! 🎉
Or maybe they stopped because they weren't making as much as they used to. Their income usually relies on views and ad revenue.
All true, but they kinda were forced to share their lives because it is their job. And yes, you're right they choose to do it, but I think it could still be very tough at times to do it every week or month even when you're not feeling the best. I think it would be difficult to really know what it's like being an influencer especially if you started when the word or concept was still new. 🤔
Also, some people on the internet still seem to have difficulties understanding what privacy means. Also, they can be so mean.. I think there's a limit to what they "have to endure" as influencers and we should all respect each other.
I personally don't like the whole concept "influencers" especially because their words seem to have so many more powers than, for example, scientists, and they often so easily destroy and distort facts. But that's that. I just want to be happy for them for leaving without any scandals and living their own lives after influencing. I hope more influencers would be influenced by them and follow their paths. 😂
Thank You! Ingrid made millions and complained constantly throughout her exploitation of her viewers. Her viewers who had real jobs; sometimes 2 at a time and school. Cry me a river. She still doesnt have a real job.

Some content is relatable & helpful but most is superficial and self absorbed. Thinking anyone cares about your every move, every single day seems to be more about seeking validation than connecting with others. It’s cool when people realize their life is a result of their decisions & they can change their mind any time they want to start a new life.
It was always on like "how could i turn my life into content" and thats EXACTLY the problem with social media mainly IG for regular users. you feel the urge to post often bcuz every1 else is doing it.

Its so true, i used to post funko photography it was fun as a community but then it just turnt toxic ,people wanting to compete, who's pic is better and what not...nah i was over it

As someone who left the influencer industry as well-just know that many people make millions of dollars a year as an influencer. Even influencers in the mid-tier range can make 20, 30 or 50K per job

I would imagine anyone with the gall to call themselves an influencer, without doing much of anything and creating no real influence, gets whatever they asked for. If it is a mental toll...don't do it. Simple! I think they always put themselves first; hence the world 'influencer'. It is all about the person; me, me, me, me. Get a grip, please.
Putting anything out there online is like throwing yourself to wolves unfortunately. It absolutely has to take a toll.
Ingrid did not have the easiest personal life, was one of the first influencers at quite a young age yet executed it very well even by today's standards and exited gracefully. I appreciate that.

Influencers are folks who skip the ladder of experience and education. It's cute、but soooo many have no clue! Cooking is the worst! As a professional classically trained chef 、I cringe at the picture perfect foods, which, when I test the recipes are awful. You live your life via social media, it comes at a cost. Don't expose your life if you don't want critique.

Imagine being the person who wakes up every day judging and being a downer to someone they don't know, instead of waking up and being a positive force, then going to bed and being proud of the interactions they had and the people they lifted up.

What about the dangerous food hygiene you see on cooking channels, or vloggers who do a lot of cooking? I never get past that to try the recipes - I just assume they'll be bad if this person so obviously has no clue about basics. 🤮
Not really, you just don't see the unsuccessful videos they made while starting out.
I love watching RUclips videos on people repairing computers and vehicles and other electronics. Those guys actually make money doing their skills off social media.

I'm glad to see this content. I can say that before influencing and after influencing I've had corporate jobs and owned side businesses doing marketing consulting. Influencing allowed me to walk away from jobs I didn't like which felt good at the time. It also allowed me a ton of passive income in addition to my corporate salary and other sources of income. Now that my channel is kinda dead I just keep it going for fun as a hobby and produce the content I like making. It still pays a little but not like it used to!! Anyway I will say it was a fun time in my life and it was way too much work for not that much payout. Ultimately being an influencer was directly preventing me from buying a house so I went back to the corporate world to buy my first house. After just a few months at my corporate job I bought a house, the banks are just really fussy about influencer income since it's all 1099 contractor work. Anyway that's my story. None of that info is really on my channel it's more like the dark underbelly of being a creator. Btw I got my first 100k subs in 2017 and 2018 playing Pokémon go for those wondering who read this long (thanks btw) and it took long 10 hour days of publishing 2-4 videos a day and editing anytime I wasn't filming. Lotta fun but makes no sense when you get no benefits and the pay is inconsistent from month to month. Also trends change and your entire channel can die if you're not willing to chase them down.
You are the exception to the norm. Most don’t have normal skills nor bring anything to the table in a relationship. And no man wants that baggage.
@@calibrexdaoc it's very true. Most people who start a channel won't achieve the level of success I achieved. And what I achieved is a medium level of success at best. I got into this industry because I'm a technology expert, I know a lot about camera equipment, I love buying expensive computer and camera stuff, and I work in marketing for a living so I get the industry in general. All the things combined to result in my success and maybe even stuff that has nothing to do with me like choosing the right trends. Anyway I agree I'm the exception not the norm. My friends tell me their kids want to be influencers and I have to give them "the talk" about why it's really not a good idea or a good use of their time. Could even be damaging. Not worth the risk.
@@JonnoPlays I tried to record my videogame game play, add commentary, do write ups, all while editing them, creating thumbnails and uploading, and uses services for gifs, music, etc. took up every part of free time with no return. Even if I put more into it, I’d need to delve so much further with maybe potential returns in a few years.
as someone that used to be a twitch streamer (i wasn’t big at all) but it was SO hard. so much time and effort goes into it for little payout, but even if i was making a ton of money it would’ve been extremely hard. Always acting like everything is fine, always living for other people - it’s exhausting.
That being said, I do have another youtube channel that I want to start and do well at, I won’t make it my life. It’s going to be a side hustle, I’m not going to let it take up all of my time .
Anyone who makes $300k is going to devote a lot of time to their job and almost every day is a performance review. Glad they quit when they realized it was no longer satisfying.

I never heard of Ingrid before now, but I think she's really pretty. I'm so happy to hear she's doing great after retiring from being an influencer.

You want the money, you want the fame, you gladly accept the notoriety and expect full acceptance, then it's a wonderful life. The minute you start receiving differing points of view, that you refer to as judgments, it becomes a problem. I honestly feel bad for some of these "influencers", that look for validation from strangers through likes, shares, and comments.
Yeah it’s definitely not a healthy thing to constantly expose your brain to lol.
I love Ingrid videos. As one of her many followers, I still rewatch her videos especially her haul videos for beauty and hair products. The products she talked about are still available to purchase love her video.

If I where you, I would document this and come back at the same time and place to see this object if it appear again. Get good quality cameras to capture it, and binoculars.

I always loved Ingrid and her content. I watched her religiously and saw her grow. I totally respect her decision to leave influencing! The funny thing is, I became an influencer (prefer the term content creator) myself (on ig and tt) and have battled with some of the things she has, although on a much smaller scale. Things have changed so much. Always remember that "influencers" are real people too.
I think it’s brave to be on screen, and when it becomes clearly a prison of your own making. Grow move and on.
It's not brave. Bravery is doing something you fear but know must be done. These flakes just got on screen to satisfy an abnormally large need for attention. They weren't scared, they thought they were fascinating and deserved attention. Imagine the vanity in thinking anyone wants to see a picture of your breakfast and posting that the first time. 🙄
You added the "must be done" part. Bravery can simply be JUST doing something you fear or even doing something you want to do knowing full well for example that people will attempt to tear you down and judge you negatively. How do you know putting themselves out there on camera wasn't doing something they feared? Maybe they were so lonely that outweighed the pretty much guaranteed costs of doing so given how judgemental and cruel people can be online... There IS absolutely an aspect of bravery! Even if it ended up being in the end lucrative as well... it sounded like Ingrid at least started out because she had made friends online. Not that starting a RUclips channel for other reasons is any less valid or less brave knowing what we know about putting yourself out there online
@@Jen-cc9xkI think there’s a large pool of people that would say being on camera and then being reviewed by the internet or media in a public dress down as a high tier fear.
Being perceived and walking into an industry that requires you to remove a lot of your privacy and boundaries is brave. People want the independence and creative validation that career can open up for them, but are very deterred by the hyper surveillance and having their anonymity removed.
I’m sure there’s many delusional narcissists that are apart of social media, but that could be said about any high paying career, it doesn’t change the fact there are well intentioned people going into it that have valid fears and are brave to attempt it.
Also note that the people here were popular at the genesis of social media. No one went into it expecting it to become what it is now. It was a fringe hobby. Many did have day jobs and were students and just posted some makeup videos for fun. They used social media how it was originally intended: to socialize. To build community, but of course, capitalism will bleed into everything and it quickly became a branding strategy instead of just the entertaining distraction it was.
They were just going along with the momentum and likely weren’t mentally resilient enough to become a middling public figure.

Influencers are digital marketers. But instead of making interesting content for dishwashers. They make interesting content about themselves. I can easily see any of these people just applying to Leo Burnett and winning awards for content Ideas for major brands like Ford.
Noooo they make uninteresting content about themselves. There is no real thing as an influencer. Someone who thought what they had to say was so important that the rest of us just couldn't live without it pulled the word out of an old dictionary or wherever and used it as a marketing tool and it stuck. Just dumb.

When a person is exposed to the extreme on social networks, the person has to be psychologically prepared to receive criticism of all kinds, because not everything posted will be admired!!! The person who exposes himself/herself too much has to be prepared because if is not prepared for criticism, the excess exposure will cause to the person to have serious mental problems even suicide.

Well it isn't as if she didn't know what influencing was all about, I mean seriously, just still influencing!
Influencers in my conception would be made up of professionals or people with positive experiences to pass on to other people, but what I see frequently are problematic people with no real Content Ideas spending hours talking about nothing and talking about their dramas own problems and crying, when this should be done in a psychologists and psychiatrist clinic.
Life needs a balance that will not be assisted by limiting relationships to social media.
This is the only country where you can literally record yourself…and make money and get free stuff from brands…and call it a “job”. Lets be real though, only people who are moderately attractive rarely get this type of exposure- influencing is another form of longitudinal fast marketing. But people who are make the world go round like plumbers, electricians, teachers will work twice as hard with no notoriety, no free stuff and can’t switch careers like these people can.
I am South African living in Canada, trust me its just not in America. I was dissapointed to see a daughter of a friend in South Afric, who had a Masters degree quit her high paying bank job to be an influencer. She claims she makes more money as an influencer

COVID lockdown really changed a lot of people's careers and lifestyle trajectories.
Parasocial relationships put so much pressure on these people.
It is definitely not normal to expose own private life to this magnitude, it is not good for the person's mental state. To make it very clear: Normal exists and will never cease to exist. Normal has to do with quantity, excess or lack.
To make it even clearer; there is no such thing as normal. Where? Who? Nobody is normal...just look around and what is even crazier is to think that the people you think your influencing...could care less. It's a ridiculous thing to call yourself.

Sooo.... People chose to put themselves in the spotlight, then grew tired of being in the spotlight. Thats kinda just life for many of us.
You could see this becoming a thing back when people started going viral. The potential to elevate yourself beyond the 9-5 grind if you got lucky. Then retiring from it with everything you needed to do your own thing. I was interested in making money online before the idea of "viral" was even a thing. Going viral can literally change your life if you can keep with it and monetize it. I too would try and retire if that happened and then start a business. Fame was never my aim. But I cringe because my brother went viral, and assumes my trying to make money online endeavor was a pursuit for fame and he has tried to rub it in my face as if I had wanted to be an influencer. Since now he makes money and doesn't have to work a job. Never was the case. He equates his "influencer" status with what my aim was. My aim was merely to ditch the 9-5 and live a quiet life yet with good friends and freedom to be creative doing art. I know my comment is mostly rather meaningless, but it is good to be able to say it. People think gOiNg ViRaL is the pennacle of success and happiness today it seems. Even if you don't gO ViRaL you can still minimize your life and save and build toward living the abundant life doing what you want and love imo.

The problem with thinking that they should stop "crying" is all relative. Everybody has problems. Everybody has feelings.
You may not agree with their job but it is a job. They pay taxes. Some influencers have started businesses.
What if you got the opportunity to live the life you wanted and someone else was willing to pay for it? As with everything you will eventually find things to complain about. Thus the full circle moment when somebody says to you "stop wah wahing." You have everything you want.

Some how working in marketing and paying people to market isn't a job. Influencing has been going since the creation of humans. They just found a way to get paid for it.

The comment about “you can’t turn off”….good god…you think regular people can just “turn off”? You think they can not show up for a few days at work? Or better yet….can most of them live off savings while they figure out their next move? Listen….influencers have it easier as far as transitioning to other jobs. If it's so easy to be an influencer why aren't you or anyone who says it's not hard doing it? There are plenty of all ages *especially on TikTok*, so can't just say it's because they're young. It's all about people actually wanting to watch whatever it is you're creating or even buy what you're promoting. They take hours upon hours to edit videos if they're doing their own production. Plus imagine the vitriol that will get spewed at you on the daily? In comments and in your messages. Having to accept bullying is just part of the job??? The hours they put in and constantly having to think about what to do next... basically their minds are ALWAYS thinking about their jobs. Some have to force themselves to set aside days off or weekends because they otherwise wouldn't... thus burnout. It might not necessarily be harder, that's pretty subjective, though it absolutely doesn't sound easy if you'd ever watch videos on all it takes to do what some of them actually do.
Influencer= paid spokesperson wow that's a complex word for something that exist already so paid social media spokesperson is the right title
