    Imperial Abyss:
    It has been one year since Joe Biden came into office. While he is at COP26 making weak and unconvincing commitments on the climate, the collapse of the world order as we know it - from environment to geopolitics - seems imminent.
    In this episode, Richard Wolff and Yanis Varoufakis examine Biden’s first year in office, and share their perspectives on the current political and economic order and its future, from techno-feudalism to the new Cold War on China. They also speak about the ongoing pandemic and the profound transformations taking place in our time.
    Our second season will consist of 10 episodes, showing most Friday’s at 1900 CEST between the 17th of September and December, bringing you news from the front of our struggles, connecting across territories and oceans, nations, and generations.

      @@danielhutchinson6604 Pal, Yanis Varoufakishas, _an economist_ and an actual _thinker,_ has been in the process of writing a book (for at least longer than a year now) that not only "considers" the end of capitalism, but lays out why capitalism is ALREADY gone, ended, dead and overthrown. You'll have to pick up a copy whenever the time comes, but honestly, you can, right now for _FREE_ lol, easily seek out and listen to one of the many recent talks, videos, etc. he's done that have been put up on RUclips. He's been making and refining his case for why he believes the global "capitalism" we've all been brought up in is already over, and is being replaced as we speak _not by the left, and with socialism like a lot of us would prefer,_ but by a new system.
      Yanis calls it "technofeudalism", and he does that very deliberately and intelligently, instead of calling it something like "hypercapitalism". If you're weirdly convinced that economists (who I'll point out are *not* a monolith) won't go near capitalism's end, for... self-preservation reasons I guess, it sounds to me like Yanis would pretty substantially blow your mind out of its skull. Whatever you do though, try to absorb and focus on the substance of things, yeah? I believe you're perfectly capable of adding a unique perspective to the discussion, but not by leaving comments like that. And I'm being 100% sincere here, so I don't want you to get the wrong idea and think I'm being sarcastic or talking down to you. I'm not.

    It seems very strange to me that America has forgotten about a powerful remedy that would very quickly cure the problems caused by its sociopath billionaires. That remedy is called: labor unions. Establishing strong labor unions in this crazy capitalist environment would quickly establish the right relationships and reduce the level of inequality and significantly improve the quality of life of most employees. Change with political means is not possible because politics is compromised and subjugated to big capital - so the only real hope for change is in labor unions.

    • @walden6272

      The Billionaires spend the last several decades destroying the labor unions. They have manage to convince the public it's bad for them. In fact, some States have laws against labor unions. There's only a small amount of labor unions left. Just look at the recent example with Amazon warehouse workers rejected forming a union.

    • @walden6272
      @walden6272 2 года назад +7

      @@user-ys4og2vv8k The law doesn't ban labor unions, it permits workers to not be part of unions thus weakening the unions hold on company employees such as the Right to Work law. In the past, if you want to work in a particular factory, you have to join a union but the Right to Work law now forbids Union from mandating new employees have to join them and pay union dues. This basically creates non-union employees who can benefit from not paying union dues but yet get the same pay and benefit as union members, which encourages more employees to opt of off unions if they see the union are not doing much for them. Thus it weakens the unions strength if they shrink in members.

    • @dmike3507
      @dmike3507 2 года назад +2

      Unions haven't really been forgotten, not entirely anyway. If you look at opinion polls Americans tend to approve of them, however unions are not seen as a transformational force in society anymore, instead they are merely a means to provide slightly better compensation & work environment (though there are a few industries, especially skilled trades, that still benefit tremendously from unions). It was well understood that unions were necessary in the 1800s-early 1900s as people back then could clearly see how horrific the working conditions were. Unfortunately labor history is not taught in schools so now people are no longer aware of how oppressive the work environment was before unions & government policies drastically improved them. Most Americans know very little about how much better (though still not perfect of course) the work environments are in Western Europe & some other parts of the world.

    For example when Richard called the China one the two empires;
    Yanis went to great details , explaining the opposite.
    And Richard changed his mind and two times said yes I agree.
    But China becoming a possible future exploiting financial giant is not happening now.
    Future straggles , we will deal with it in future.
    Greetings from Iran/ California.

    In Germany we have a concept called "soziale Marktwirtschft" (social market economy), which originally meant that the market and the economy had to act in a way that was not anti-social. About 25 years ago the thing began to shift and for about 15 years now it can be read as "if the economists and actors in the market act in a way that makes the markets swim belly-up, the whole of society has to pay the bill".

    1)Economics is founded on exchange
    2) Exchange is mediated by a form of measurement we call money
    3) The originating intent of the media of exchange and its corresponding institutional arrangements act as invisible constants throughout society,
    4) Behind most surface social behaviors, these primary ‘decisions’~how exchange will be mediated, are acting continuously shaping what appears on the visible level
    5) Money is to Economics as Water is to Biology, therefore in discussing economics knowing clearly the what, how and why of this foundational technique is essential to truly understanding the visible effects of economics. In other words grounding our fundamental premises on the most basic factors ie the water.

      Money is decent at managing micro-level exchanges, like it used to when currency originated. However, on a global scale, or even national, why these exchanges cannot operate on a barter system?
      Example: We need raw iron ore for smelting to construct some infrastructure, the people that have it and don't need it in excess have a deficit in nitrates for fertilizer, which we happen to have - why is a price needed here? What does it matter what amounts will be exchanged if everyone's needs are satisfied on a similar level?

    • @jimnickola7196
      @jimnickola7196 2 года назад +1

      No, we (individuals) are NOT responsible for the national “debt.” The national “debt” is the obligation of the fed gvt.
      The fed gvt issues that “debt” in its own currency, which it creates, and on which it sets the interest rates (and pays the interest with the money it creates-NOT with collected fed tax $$)
      The national “debt” is nothing more than the total amount invested into the economy that has not been taxed back (since the beginning). It’s not a burden to current or future individuals. That’s a (mostly) right-wing (entirely) neoliberal myth.
      The national “debt” was purposely incorrectly framed. If viewed for what it actually is, the austerity mindset that it evokes would be a relic of the past (gold standard era). It is actually the national assets-assets to the non-gvt sector. The fed gvt’s liabilities are the assets of the non-fed sectors.
      The fed gvt (being the monopoly CURRENCY ISSUER) can always meet its obligations in its own currency, and it can never “go broke.” The fed gvt can choose to default (which it normally won’t), but that would be a political decision, not because of a financial constraint.

    The network is now the economy. Any country could at any moment create a democratically controlled, digital retail platform alternative to Amazon. Every citizen would have a right to a buy/sell account and would be a 'shareholder.' The central bank could create a digital version of national currency and every citizen would have an account, so we could trade without paying rents to VISA etc. Indeed, we could buy a loaf of bread at the corner shop without paying rent to VISA. And a public postal service could guarantee distribution. Also, most importantly, universal public networking would create a neutral playing field to allow every citizen equal high speed access to the economy. There is still room for competition, although when everyone is a stakeholder in the public platform, the competition the global fiefdom of Jeff would finally face would be very stiff indeed

The depletion of oil, natural gas and carbon is another global crisis that has even lower attention by governments than climate change. Our whole civilization is rooted in these materials. And very few talk about this. I know only the Post Carbon Institute in the US and Antonio Turiel in Spain.
