For those complaining about the Redstone and hoppers for this base, those have mostly been added as little projects you can do to easily expand the base. IE: sure he uses Redstone and hoppers for fueling the furnaces, but until you get that set up you can just do that part manually. Same with the nether portal and chicken farm.
Tbh a nether portal isn't that hard to get. As long as you find lava and make an infinite water source, you can place it in such a way that makes a nether portal shape without getting a diamond pickaxe. Then, you'd just need a flint and steel and you've got a nether portal. (It's even easier if you stumble across a village that has obsidian.) As for the quartz, it's not that hard to find quartz in the nether & it should be a really quick trip to get all the quartz you need for the redstone in the starter house. The hard part would actually be getting enough iron. Redstone shouldn't be a problem since you're going to end up using a lot less compared to iron.

Mumbo: alright let’s build a starter base
Also mumbo: alright, so now we have our sextuple beacon and fully automated wither farm, but we’re not done yet
The base may include : a working computer, a 200x220 Farm, A City for Villagers, a giant mob farm, a pool in the size of an ocean, A Giant Moving Mansion, 392745 Beds, a large and complicated automatic sorting system and a end portal.

@@wallad171 so, unless I'm miscalculating (which is likely) it's only cheaper in the long run if you make three or more barrels, each of which require two slabs
Because otherwise, a single barrel requires, in essence, nine planks, so you would need to make more than one for it to be cheaper, but it would still be more expensive if you only made one
