    Worked for a Japanese electronic company in the 80s right there at trabuco and Irvine boulevard. The coolness of this location was el toro. Whenever the blue angels were in town, they would practice here and on top of said electronic company was a neat roof (is it roof or ruff) they would fly upside down right over our building. One time I was having lunch up there and said blue angel pilot flipped me off. He was just jealous over my primo viewing spot. I used to jog from Alton and Irvine boulevard to the 241 right past the old el toro base housing. Seeing abandoned swing sets and condos was always sad. The other not so cool part of that location is there is a prison there, James Musick prison. Once several prisoners escaped causing my building to be on lockdown for a while. That sucked plus the frequent fires that burned through there. Good times.

    I live in Irvine and yes the vibe is that this city is extremely safe, clean and well planned out. It’s the main reason I live here.

    Yup I live in Irvine and always wanted to live here as a kid in the 90s. Dream came true and although we flirt with wanting to move it is VERY DIFFICULT considering the Whole Foods, Spectrum, amazing bike trails, clean streets, Shady Canyon's Amazing mansions, being regarded as the safest city in America with Top schools and a quick jaunt to LA or SD on the weekends. The beach is 10 mins away and of course the CA weather. We are indeed spoiled and it makes me want to work harder everyday to continue to raise my kids here. It's hard to leave. Thanks for this flyover!!!

    As a kid in the 60's I grew up in Laguna Beach and everything you flew over was solid Orange groves and we used to ride our dirt bikes thru it. I moved in 87 and would love you to fly from I5 up laguna canyon to main beach/up park ave and down temple hills.

    They use the landing strip for the parking lot for the amphitheater.
    The city of Lake Forest, was originally named El Toro. When El Toro Airbase closed, the city didn’t want to be associated with other cities that had base closures. So the name changed to Lake Forest.

    At 2:03 on the upper right, the townhomes known as Los Olivos, is built on the property where the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre was, where Wild Rivers water park was, furthermore, depending on the age of the viewers, this particular property had a business and it was known as Lion Country Safari. It closed back in 1984. There’s a tree on the hillside, a lonely tree, supposedly Frasier the lion is buried somewhere around that tree.

    What a trip! Irvine was the model modern planned community in the 1970s, a checkerboard pattern of farmland and development. Mission Viejo was the graceful version of Irvine with gently curving roads, the idyllic place to raise a family away from the city problems in L.A. County. Take a look at a "Western City" magazine or ad insert of the L.A. Times from then. I haven't been there since, so this founder of Irvine was ... A trip! Thank you

    The 5/405 interchange in South OC is commonly called the El Toro Y, or even just “The Y”. Fun Fact: properties owned by The Irvine Company have green parking stripes in their parking lots so that the owner, Donald Bren, can easily spot his real estate from his helicopter.

    Thank you Micah Muzio - I used to live in Irvine, CA and worked un Tustin, CA. Fun to visit the old neighborhood.
    2:14 - Hey Micah - I worked at that Mazda facility!
    3:52 - the residential/agriculture development plan was one of the things that attracted me to Irvine. And that was in place from the beginning. "Planed Community." It was "is" great in my opinion.
    4:01 - I had a business partner that lived right behind where the El Torro Marine Base was. Had the big dirigible hangers. Cool.
    7:47 - The Orange Balloon - now that is new since I lived there. What a day trip THAT would make. I wonder if there are restaurants or maybe a picnic park around there - for the Grandkids you know.
    14:35 - Irvine Lake - had some good time there with the family. I think there was a small zoo there if memory serves me. Had some rescued Bald Eagles and stuff.

    Freeway interchanges are fascinating in their design. Old-school designs like cloverleaf were inefficient because the curves were so sharp they slowed traffic considerably. They were also more compact so commuters had less time to access the proper lane which also led to slowing. The 405/5 that Micah showed has gentle curves, more lanes, and more distance for the commuter to prepare

    Another interesting fly-over Micah. I've been to Irvine 3 times either on holiday or filming. First was in 1980 on my first trip to the US, when my wife and I picked up an RV near John Wayne Airport on our holiday. I cant believe how much development there has been in the past 40 years; much of the housing and most of the shopping malls that you flew over simply weren't there back then. The last time was 20 years ago whilst working in LA on a UK TV show called Scrapheap Challenge (the US version was called Junkyard Wars, some may remember it.) We filmed a couple of times at a rather run-down, closed for the season, water park near the 5/405 interchange. I recall that hymn singing from a nearby open-air evangelical church kept interfering with our audio. I've looked over google satellite-view but I cant find it. Must be long gone, probably a housing estate now. Some of our other locations were too far out of LA for you to fly over, Kernville, Mammoth Mountain and Ventura Racetrack (very attractive town), but I keep hoping to see Sun Valley (site of the Junkyard) and Hansen Dam.

    • @faYte0607
      @faYte0607 4 года назад

      Are you from the UK sir? I grew up in Irvine in the late 90s, moved out and am about to move back into the city next week. It has changed a lot in the 20 years so I can't imagine 40 years. Definitely give this city a visit if you ever get a chance. Bet it'll bring back some memories!

    • @kenholt3859
      @kenholt3859 4 года назад

      The water park was called Wild Rivers, and that and the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater were torn down about 10 years ago and replaced with a housing development called Los Alivos at Irvine Spectrum, if you want to see what it looks like now from Google earth. A new, larger Wild Rivers is planned to be built at the OC Great Park (the former El Toro Marine base)

  • @Hallahanify
    @Hallahanify 4 года назад

    The irvine company originally owned and developed the whole city. They are holding out on that farmland till the time is right for them to develop it and get the most value out of it. Probably in the next 5 to ten years. It will all be developed. Irving's population will be over 400,000
