  • A small community in Snowflake, Arizona, has retreated into the desert to escape modern life. Residents say they have multiple chemical sensitivities and environmental illness, which have not been scientifically proven as real illnesses by medical professionals.

I have molds present in my system that began to develop after being diagnosed with Lyme disease 20 years ago!!! It’s HORRIBLE!! Our current home has been inspected and remediated TWICE! I drew the short stick in the GENE POOL! I was an active runner, co-ed softball player, tennis, volleyball, any sport and mother of four active children. I started feeling bad years ago and in different houses I’d be really sick or feel fine. I found a doc who treats Lyme and there I was diagnosed Mold Toxicity. Seven months ago I took a brand new test and I’m OFF THE CHARTS with FOUR TOXIC MOLDS!! The WORST I have is Black Mold! I got the test results and sat and cried! Now everything makes sense. All the WASTED YEARS sick and being called names, nobody to trust, etc etc makes me so sad. Look up the symptoms etc and you’ll be shocked!!! I am barely able to stand and pain is HORRENDOUS!! Doctors don’t know how to test or treat!

Maybe they are hypersensitive to certain things. Allergies affect people in different ways. We just figured out that when a dog is losing their fur for no reason, its likely caused by their food. They figured out that sugar causes inflammation in a large number of people. And that fuzzy-headed feeling he was describing also is a symptom of allergies that we didnt realize before, although usually its food related, proteins mostly. Point is, we are just now starting to discover that so many of life's aches, pains, and common ailments are caused by the way we eat and the things we are exposed to everyday.
I dont just assume people are nuts because something sounds crazy. Think how far medicine has come in 100 years. In another century maybe we will have discovered that the ink and water repellent was toxic all along and wifi led to the great apocalypse.

One year ago I was exposed to thick air with VOC, including FORLMALDEHYDE, which came from furnitures (MDF), I got sick with lots of unsual bleedings for 4 days..
This year, because of work, I had to use that dormitory again..I just ran out of the building because after breathing in the air there, which has very special smell (something like plastic), just I couldn't stand it. Beside terrible headache, I thought I will vomit at any given moment and I was almost out of my mind...crazy..cried dunno what to do; I just ran away...
After I ran out, I went to the center area and paid for a hotel room. Then I was ok...

My dad is convinced he is allergic to wifi, i haven't had wifi in my house for 2-3 years now. He stopped working for a couple of months and we are always restricted on what we can do as a family (no hotels, no public places with wifi and no visiting family). It's funny to watch these people until you have someone in your life who is as crazy as them. Everywhere we go he ''educates'' people on his ''disease''. Luckily next year i'm off to college. Things like this is indeed hard to live with but not for them, for the people around them.

Wifi operates in either the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz spectrum.
Your home router puts out somewhere between 100 mW (milliwats, or 20dBm) to 400 mW.
Water "resonates" at 2.45Ghz. (more accurately, the too-heavy-on-one-side water molecule will respond and change position when you alternate the field)
The average home microwave operates at 2.45Ghz centered, but will waffle down to around 2.3Ghz or so (they're not super accurate, and do not need to be).
The average home microwave puts out around 1000 W (Watts).
There's no such thing as perfect shielding; 1-2 W escapes from your microwave.
From this perspective alone, you get more 2.4Ghz radiation when you microwave a cup of tea in the morning, than you would ever get from your Wifi router all day.
From this perspective alone, if you stand in view of a gigantic fusion reactor for a few minutes, you'll get more 2.4 Ghz radiation than your router would likely provide you in your entire life. We call this state 'daytime' and 'going outside'.
Thats Psychosomatic if I've ever heard about it. :)

MCS & EHS are recognized as a Human Rights disability in Canada & we have clinics specializing in it across the country that are part of the health care system not private clinics.
Many countries recognize MCE & EHS as diseases & have assigned an International Classification of Disease code including the USA.
    "Social Security
DI 24515.064 Evaluation Of Specific Issues - Environmental Illness (1996)
“In claims alleging disability due to environmental illness, it is often difficult to identify abnormal signs and laboratory findings which can be associated with the alleged symptoms. Therefore, in evaluating claims based on environmental illness, all of the claimant's symptoms, signs, and laboratory findings must be considered to determine if there is a medically determinable impairment and the impact of any impairment on the claimant's ability to work. This evaluation should be made on an individual case-by-case basis to determine if the impairment prevents substantial gainful activity.”
Saying "few medical professionals believe" shows the need for constant upgrading of medical credentials in respect to new studies & diseases. It also indicates how very difficult this is for patients who have to take their health into their own hands in order to survive.

From my experience and those around me with conditions that are very rare or not so easy to diagnose. When the doctors can't explain it off quickly enough, it either goes one of two ways most times.
    1. You're depressed take a pill
    OR
    2. It is all in your mind get over yourself.
If you look back not so long ago a condition Chronic fatigue Syndrome was one such condition that was considered in the heads of people at one stage. Now it is recognised as actual condition. Seeing how these people struggle, I know the feeling of frustration at been affected like that. I have Aspegers am extremely sensitive to smells, certain sounds and even textures. You have to be careful about doing everyday things that everyone else does and take for granted, without making your day worse.

MCS is idiopathic, vaguely defined, and poorly studied, which naturally makes it controversial. However, chemical hypersensitivity itself is accepted by conventional medicine. For example, there are both allergic and irritant forms of rhinitis, asthma, conjunctivitis, and contact dermatitis. And for many migraine and headache sufferers, airborne chemical irritants or odorants are common triggers. Perhaps in the future a subset of MCS cases will be identified as another manifestation of irritant or sensory hypersensitivity.
Both allergic and irritant hypersensitivity reactions can cause similar symptoms, but there are major differences. Allergies are immune-driven inflammatory responses to highly specific molecules that bind to specific antibodies like a lock and key. Reactions to chemical irritants are nerve-driven inflammatory responses to structurally-diverse chemicals that share common noxious properties of chemical reactivity, acidity and alkalinity. Those 3 properties are damage signals and thus can stimulate an inflammatory and pain response.
When nerves sense damage they can become more sensitive to behaviorally protect injuries from further harm, which is why even a gentle touch to an inflamed area is painful, such as sunburned skin. This is helpful when it works appropriately, but in some people the nerves become excessively sensitized to the point that they themselves now cause harm, and even extreme disability in some cases, with painful and/or neurogenic inflammatory responses to even harmless stimuli.
Also a disrupted airway epithelial barrier that's more permeable to airborne irritants increases irritant contact with the sensitized airway sensory nerves. It's analogous to skin barrier disruption, such as a cut, causing increased sensitivity to irritants such as vinegar, lemon juice, soda pop, baking soda, alcohol, peroxide, aftershave etc. etc. An endless variety of chemical irritants getting in a cut can trigger the nerves to fire causing pain. But it's not an allergy to endless specific chemical molecules, it's a reaction to certain common noxious chemical properties themselves.
There are other possible contributory factors, but to be brief, neural sensitization (peripheral and/or central), +/- epithelial barrier disruption, can cause hypersensitivity to countless common chemical irritants, or "allergic to the world", and it is hell.

He set his detector in that exact joint and presto, gas leak he could not detect.

Symptom Profile of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity in Actual Life
Objective: This study was conducted to confirm the definition of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) in actual life: that multiple symptoms are provoked in multiple organs by exposure to, and ameliorated by avoidance of, multiple chemicals at low levels. We used the Ecological Momentary Assessment to monitor everyday symptoms and the active sampling and passive sampling methods to measure environmental chemical exposure.
Conclusions: MCS patients do not have either somatic or psychologic symptoms under chemical-free conditions, and symptoms may be provoked only when exposed to chemicals.

It's not always about 'mental illness'- I was diagnosed w/ an autoimmune disease named Dermatomyacitis back in 2007. Thanks to immuno supressant therapy (Prednisone, Cell- Cept & Retuxin Chemotherapy), I am in remission now; but I used to have terrible reactions when ever I went into a big box store like Walmart or Costco. Turns out, it was Formalin gas 'cooking off' from thousands of imported Chinese plastics in the air...It was always worse in poorly ventilated stores...My immune system was attacking my own lungs at that point (gave me pulmonary fibrosis & destryed 40% ofmy lungs before I was diagnosed), & for a while I had to isolate myself from certain environments & products as a result.
Wasn't just formailn gas, but also wearing or being in close approximation to synthetic fibers & certain cleaning agents also- So it's not always mental illness; these can be very real physical disabilities, depending on the patient & diagnosis!

I remove gluten, dairy, eggs, processed foods and sugars from my diet and I'm now eating a Whole Foods plant-based diet and my sensitivities have improved dramatically. I know what it's like to have these sensitivities. The first time I used my mom's cell phone to call my new girlfriend 17 years ago, I felt a change in my brain that is undescribable, almost like activating your third eye, but it won't go away. I was down to eating a handful of foods that I didn't react to, I was extremely light sensitive and couldn't go without sunglasses. I would react to all chemicals, anything with fragrance, I would blister by touching metal, chemicals in food would make my throat blister up. I am kinda shocked by some of the comments, but I do think that if they are sensitive to electricity and such (which I myself don't seem to react to) find no other way around it but to move away from the grid. It is an autoimmune disorder and could get better with a long-term diet strategy that is structured similar to the okanawan diet except all vegan since they may react to fat's and oils (very inflammatory) like I do.

Not the most sympathetic depiction of people with MCS. MCS is real, and it can be devastating to be told that it is all in your head when you pretty much are allergic to the world. Of course it is going to cause some mental anguish, and probably trauma to realize that everything around you in a "normal" place is making you sick. I hope the "normies" don't get too close, as things like the perfumed exhaust from dryer sheets (science has proven "normal" dryer sheets to be toxic) could be a huge problem for these folks. Go to the environmental working group for some scientific evidence of the toxic nature of many everyday products. As to being OCD, you kinda have to be when most products cause you to not be able to function normally. To all the skeptics out there... Ever notice that you get a headache around must, mold, perfumes or strong chemical cleaners? Do scented candles make you or anyone you know sneeze? Do you ever end up zoning out a bit in places like Walmart? Well, this is a very extreme version of that.

I know a kid who is allergic to almost everything including sunlight. There's very few substances he can consume, and a compounding pharmacy has to make it. It's like baby formula and it's the only "food" he can have. He uses electronics and Wi-Fi doesn't bother him.

Some people are afflicted with rare maladies. How about those who are allergic to their own tears, and sweat? Rare, but quite real. I believe MCS is also real, as I have no proof to the contrary. One could easily fake dizziness, or nausea, but a skin rash? Or can one fake anaphylaxis? Maybe these commenters should try to be a little less judgemental, and a little more humble. Yeah...that's going to happen.

      > I believe it's real because I have no proof to the contrary.
That's not how that works. People have to prove something is real, not that it isn't. Burden of proof and so on.
Those people have visible, measurable reactions to their allergens, though. They don't just 'feel bad'. I have a cousin who is allergic to water, and his skin comes out in giant red rashes after he showers. 90% of these people are mentally ill.

this is real and thank you for have common sense about this disorder, i had 5 kids and never was sick a day till i was poisioned by black mold, now i have chemical sensitivity and perfume allergies, no you cant fake anaphylaxis, believe you me, this is something you dont want in your life, i have to ware special masks to go outside now and to be in public, but when i get home its shower and clean cloths so that i can breath and not break out in rash or hives, it isnt the life i for seen for old age, but its a fact of life now and you learn to live with it like dibeaties or copd

I know you probably won't see this, but you can "fake anaflacsic shock". If you are so convinced of an allergy like this your body can trigger it responses as if it were real. And we wouldn't call it faking it. It's that they real, too there heart of hearts believe that they have an illness

People seem to think that this is some sort of joke. Everybody's heard of peanut allergies the question is are peanut allergies psychosomatic or real. When a person's airway is closing because of a peanut allergy is it all in their head. Is the EpiPen containing epinephrine a placebo or is it acting as a drug. I think the problems that these people experience are more like allergies. Being a person that experiences discomfort after touching a newspaper I know exactly what these people are going through. If I used throw away gloves to read the newspaper it would look silly so I do not ever read newspapers in public.

Seriously, since I was a teenager, going through a HUGE airport made my chest feel funny. Fast forward 20 years, I get heart palpitations. Later realized the closer I get to the security machines, my chest tightens! I thought it was just anxiety, right? The further I walk away, my heart beats regularly. I’m talking with people, getting food, etc. I love flying! Not afraid at all.
I had an older woman very nice security agent and mentioned how my chest tightens. She said many passengers talk with her and it’s always their head feels fuzzy, or their chests get tight! I know an ICU head nurse and described it. She said with certain individuals the magnetic pull makes them sick. I was shocked!!
I’m still flying and not changed my life. I’m just aware of it. Weird right?

MCS is so widely misunderstood by western medicine as a whole and therefore most with this condition are suffering to no end. The problem with MCS is there is very little guidance in terms of how to cope with toxin overloading. Most are caused by a single tramautic event such as a severe chemical exposure, mold or lyme disease that causes an extreme and unusual immune system backflare chemical or electromagnetic radiowave hypersensitivity. The thing is people who don't have the condition are quick to point it out as quack but as someone who has chemical sensitivity its really nothing to mess around with and if not managed can ruin one's life. Though I will say anyone with the condition really needs to manage their condition with a high quality diet rich in live plant foods such as beets and cilantro and with regular colonic flushes such as coffee enemas. The problem is there is so little direction for these people go in they really can only resort to avoidance because they don't have the understanding on managing not only one's environment but also managing toxin load on a personal level.

It sounds like they have a mineral and vitamin deficiency. Yes, something so simple, but many overlook it. The lady received her problems after pregnancy, which tells me she was already deficient during her pregnancy and was drained after her pregnancy. Deficiencies in any mineral or vitamins will produce sensitivities. They should go get their blood tested to make sure everything is in the normal ranges. Most Medical Doctors will not do blood tests for this. Go to a specialists that will do Cocktail infusions of all minerals and important vitamins to bring everything back to normal levels.

When I developed this condition twenty five years ago, people thought I was crazy when I said that nail polish, perfumes, new carpeting and furniture were making me sick. Now they have toluene and formaldehyde-free nail polish; as well as regulations regarding emissions of carpeting and furniture. I guess I wasn't so crazy after all. It's hard to understand why it's difficult for people to comprehend that some people are more sensitive to toxins than others. I sure wish I wasn't so sensitive; while I never could afford moving to the desert - this condition has messed up my life.

"I self-interrupt", yes that's OCD. As far as I understand there are two basic kinds of OCD. Mental and physical. The latter is the better known one, where you for example enter a room and have to touch everything or else it would be bad luck. The first one is the one where you do all that in your brain. Sometimes the physical one derives out of the mental one because you bring what's inside on the outside to be able to focus better. I have a light form of that too (just 1 or 2 ticks), but man, as a kid it was awful! Because as a kid you are way worse at self-control... I'm so glad I outgrew it.

As someone with OCD I get exactly what line you're thinking in. I'd be curious to see if he could pass a test--such as how accurately he can call out a powered electronic device being close to him when he can't see whether it's on or even near him. If he's very accurate with it, the psychological idea still can't hold up.
