  • Last year I visited this farm because the lambs simply weren't growing as they should have done. We found a few things lacking or going wrong (see link to previous vlog below) and made some changes this year to hopefully avoid the same thing happening again. But were we right?

Hi kaz do you use the boluses for lambs much e.g. smartrace or do you reckon just drenching for the short term works just as well when they're going fat?

Dependent on exact deficiencies but a few of our clients use boluses - generally I find farmers hate bolusing ewes let alone lambs.
If cobalt/b12 an issue then we have a lot of Smartshot users - IMHO a great product with all the caveats of a special import.

Not sure I agree about Texels running to fat, that is what you can rely on them not to do, but Suffolks are ideal to market as suck lambs at 12 weeks, lambed in Dec/Jan for the Easter market, should reach 38 - 40 kg, that’s where they do best. Most downland breeds easily run to fat. Been there and done it. Definitely better results with Texels for leanness and conformation but slower growth. Although I hate to say it, NZ farming is more swept up than here with producing a standard product and as an ex farmer I am a complete traitor in buying NZ lamb when I can as it is a reliable product. I have one recommendation for anyone new to farming, read absolutely every book on the subject written by a qualified expert, you can get your hands on from cover to cover, and then read it again, and of course having a good vet to advise is paramount.
