FYI, the Trails series is a sub-series within the larger "Legend of Heroes" series. "Trails in the Sky" was the 1st game in the Trails series but there were many "Legend of Heroes" games before that one, which took place in different universes. I guess they're ending the Trails series but the "Legend of Heroes" series will still continue with a new sub-series.
It will likely be the same in spirit but with a whole new story continuity, spell system, etc.

My most wanted old Falcom IP revival is Popful Mail. The Mega/Sega CD version is full of character with many laugh out loud moments. Someone at falcom tried to pitch a new game around the early 2010s but was unsuccessful. Hopefully they have changed their minds and decided to give Mail, Tatt and Gaw another adventure.
Brandish is a close 2nd. I don't know how well the digital only Xseed psp release fared sales wise. But I personally rather enjoyed it despite it's weird control scheme. A remaster would be awesome.

It's worth thinking about the future of Trails-Like games. How many years should a series go on with a continuous story? It's clear with how people debate timelines with the Persona, Zelda series and even trying to connect worlds like FF7 / FFX-2 together that it's a highly desirable trait, but one that's only happened successfully in this single game series to this point.

There's nothing to really think about. Series comes to an end, it's ok. MOTHER concluded just fine as a trilogy. Trails will conclude just fine as a series of like 15 games (assuming the final arc is a two parter, after Kai). Even if Legend of Heroes continues, it will feel like a brand new IP. No more connections after that.

It was fantastic to meet you and Brandon at your panel at Anime Expo on Saturday. If I had to bet, I'd bet there will be 7 more trails games after Kai no Kiseki. 7 more games fits very neatly into the "no 30th anniversary" edict by Kondo, as if Falcom eventually moves to releasing 2 games a year, they could comfortably release 7 trails games before the decade is out. I like the balance of 20 total games: 4 sept-terrions in the first 10 games, 3 in the second 10 games. Western Zemuria in the first 10 games, Eastern Zemuria in the second 10. It would give us the time to go to Arteria, Leman State, Ored State, the Epstien foundation, and to countries in the far east of the continent. Plus I think there will be an "end of story" two parter to cap the whole thing off; the Avenger's end-game of trails.
The difficulty with trails is that there are still so many loose ends: we haven't met 3 of the 4 S-rank bracers, we haven't met 3 of the anguis (1st, 5th and the new 7th), we haven't met at least 8 enforcers (4, 5, 7, 11,12, 14, 16, 17), we haven't met half the gralslitters, and we know nothing about Epstein, 3 of the 7 holy beasts, the great collapse, the tribes of time, wind and water, or (most crucially) the big A-lady herself.
I agree with you: I want to see this series end someday, because I want this story to have a conclusion, but I also do not want it to be rushed. I don't want to end it until the loose ends are tied up.

It was great to meet you as well! I do hope that they write out and outline the full story of the next Trails series before they begin making the games. I feel like this series has suffered from alot of bloat, and sometimes even the writers didn't even know where they were going with it. They have ALOT to cover in the last couple of games. Hopefully instead of sending us on useless filler sidequests, they use that opportunity to really enrich the world and let us know more about it - just as you said.

    • @SuperSupersoda
      @SuperSupersoda Месяц назад

@@davidvinc I like the way you think, but on the subject of filler sidequests, it seems like every JRPG has the "find the missing cat" sidequest. These come in two forms: the filler kind that you get most of the time, and then, the kind in Trails to Azure and Cold Steel 3, where it's "find the missing cat - with Shirley Orlando". Adding Shirley "Little Miss War Crimes" Orlando does so much to elevate a side quest.

As someone who sidelined this series for the longest time, I'd imagine that the next thing would be start porting all titles to current hardware in order to futureproof them. No problem in letting things die and look forward if at the very least we are preserving them.
I have a psp with the first games, but I think its pretty unreasonable to expect this from anyone, really. I have skipped the ps3/4 titles because I got jaded hard by sony during the ps3 generation, so unless I have like 3 or 4 different sony devices I guess Im out of luck.

While I feel sad that the Trails series are coming to an end, I also think it could not go on forever. I certainly think it must end on a high note, now the series is still strong. It's exiting to know other games are in the make that do not belong to any previous game.
We also know for sure there is a second Tokyo Xanadu in the make, and I am personally very exited to see that one coming. I liked the Zwei series, and if falcom would make something like that (but in a modernized jacket), I think I would like that. A love the mix of magic and modernity of the Trails games, but would love a few entries that explores the ancient civilization before the Dark Ages. I think Falcom needs to make a decision of where the series needs to end, and work backward from there. I hate for the plot to fall apart at the end because the pacing gets rushed and starts to make no sense. Felt like Cold Steel almost did that with 3 & 4.
While I'm enjoying Trails Through Daybreak, I'm somewhat disappointed there's yet another bad organization as the main plot point if the story is 80-90% complete. Feel like Ouroboros should have been the main focus with their new plan because that's where the series has been kind of heading this whole time. While I'm sure there will be some connection when I finish the game, it does feel like it's adding more side stories, when it should be moving toward a conclusion given what this article states.

A plot this intricate and amazing world building really should have a flexible outline. Falcom seems to know how to weather any storm in the gaming industry. They are able to make great content with realistic budgets and sales expectations and not have to spend 5-10 years developing one game to get eyeball and rock textures and shadows perfect.

Daybreak has to be one of my least favorite JRPGs, but I guess that's what I get for being a newcomer to a beloved series. If you don't love the story, you're basically screwed. Combat is excellent but few and far between endless cutscenes introducing a new character every 5 minutes. Once you're done with the cutscene, it's back to running to the next marker on the map for another cutscene. Everything is about watching the next cutscene would be great if the story didn't feel like it was written by teenagers for teenagers. When a game trades player agency for story, you're stuck either loving the story or hating the game.

But real talk, calling out Capcom of all companies? I get Konami but Capcom has been on a roll lately. Sure, it sucks they haven't given us a new Breath of Fire yet, but they've at least shown interest. Plus, they're giving we fans new games & remasters of their own IPs. Dragon's Dogma, Ace Attorney, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, etc. If they wanna call out any company, it should be Bandai Namco for a multitude of reasons. One of them being their severe lack of good news on the Tales series.

Interesting that he adapted a stereotyped western idea of what "JRPG" means, when in my opinion, it should only mean "A Japanese RPG", which WOULD include Elden Ring. There are many Japanese RPGs heavily inspired by western aesthetics, writers and games, and it's silly imo to imply that only ones with anime influence/aesthetics are "JRPGs". It IS nice to see that some JP devs have realized that people use the term fondly when it's not the kind of anti-JRPG crowd, though.
But yeah, I dunno. The line would start to get real muddy. You have games that have mechanics clearly Very Japanese but have visual aesthetics and settings that feel western, like Shadow Hearts or Baroque.

I feel like the sky is the limit for them, but that they could start penetrating further into the west by bringing their BACK catalogue to Xbox as well. They could really leverage that which I assume would be relatively easy to port at this point. Sure, the Xbox audience for JRPGs isn’t MASSIVE, but it’s there. This would have been a pipe dream years ago, but now we’re seeing Square and Atlus having good releases on Xbox, I think anything is possible. (Ok, long shot but still)

I mean, some of them have worked on the serie for 15-20 years ofc they wanna try something new. do I love the serie? do I want it to keep going? ofc, but these guys made one of the coolest jrpg series ever, what if they do it again and for ex maybe make it sci-fi up in space like an xenosaga- who knows, let them try new stuff! at worst, and if everything fails, they would probably retreat back to what works like "the legend of heroes" so we have nothing to lose.

I know you're being fascetious but it wouldn't be anywhere near 60 games. Besides, tons of entries is fine for a franchise that's closer to a TV series than a conventional video game. Plus sequels to arcs (SC, Azure, CS2, etc) are closer to expansions than their own games, it's just their dialogue quantity inflates them to rediculous lengths

Also there is some worry about A.I being used in Localization due to current Localizers actively ruining translations in Anime, and there are rumors a new Anime that just released is all A.I Subtitles. I hope that never happens, because A.I in its current state is horrible, but Id be for it as long as it is a direct translation and prevents people from messing with the Culture of JRPGs and Anime.

    • @nihildwo4874
      @nihildwo4874 Месяц назад

      hey man,
I guess I can help you with "where to start in trails?"
The trails series is divided into multiple sub-arcs, but are part of an ongoing storyline. In general, Each arc starts with a new set of protagonists in a different country, therefore the first game of each sub-arc serves as an introductionary game to the country, their issues, the heroes, their motives etcetc. Therefore, any "first game" of each arc is an acceptable starting point from gameplay-wise and as a self-contained story.
However, a lot of people will tell you "the only acceptable order to play the games is in release order". The following points i bring up are the opinions of these people, and not necessarily mine:
+ A common reason is that trails is a continuous storyline with an ongoing history, and later titles will reference the events of the previous titles, therefore spoiling the stories of previous titles.
+ Another reason is the "lowered emotional value" you obtain when previous characters return, i.e. "the protagonist from game 1 make a return" obviously hits different if you played game 1. In contrast, if you start in game 10, and the protagonists return it is "ehh, whatever" to the person. You can obviously replay the game later, but you'd only hav 1 first playthrough.
+ The last reason ties into the previous points. Obviously, the entire cast is very interconnected, and well, they talk and reference each other when they meet. You would miss out on this when playing through the game.
My personal opinion on these points is: If you cannot take the spoilers, then starting from trails in the sky is the only option indeed. If you can still be engaged in an rpg despite of it (e.g. you are a "I know the ending, but I'm still very interested in the path to the ending"), then you should have no personal issue with starting with a later game. The other 2 points feel imo kinda exaggerated. For me these are somewhat "zero sum". While it is true that you lose out on "hype" in the later game playing first, playing the later game first, and having met the recurring characters can also act as a "teaser/hype creator" for the older games you didn t play yet. I personally do not want to make a recommendation on how you should play the series here. i just want to present the facts and my opinion on what the implications of each path are.
So at last, let's present you the series of game, split up in their respective sub-arcs (with the ingame years at which they take place). like i mentioned previously, you should not play an arc out of order. Most Arcs have 2 names in the west. For example, the Sky arc and the Liberl Arc are the same. The reason for these two names are, 1 name refers to the country where the plot takes place (i.e. Liberl), whereas the other name refers to the "game moniker", i.e. All Trails in the Sky games take place in Liberl. For the sake of simplicity, I will only use the "game nominator"
The Sky Arc (1200-1203) consists of trails in the sky FC [=First chapter], trails in the sky SC [=second chapter], and trails in the sky 3rd.
The crossbell arc takes place in the city state of crossbell, and consists of 2 games: trails into zero and trails into azure. This one here doesn't have a "game arc name", because the games do not share a name. They take place around 1204-1205. By japanese release order, they were the 4th and 5th game in the trails series, originally released around 2010ish.
However, due to shenanigans I do not want to delve into, these games were originally skipped for localization in favor of the next arc. These games received an official localization around 2021.
The 3rd arc is the cold steel arc, it consists of the cold steel games i, ii, iii and iv. This arc was localized before the crossbell arc, but was originally released after it, starting from around 2013. Cold Steel 1 and 2 are contemporary with the crossbell arc (i.e. same time, but different country), whereas there is an ingame time skip of 2 years between cold steel 2 and 3.
If you go by publisher NISA, they will tell you "you can start with cold steel 3". Technically that is true, because cold steel 3 introduces a new main cast and is somewhat an introductionary game. However, I would not recommend it at all. The reason why NISA says "you can start with cold steel 3" is a political/financial one: All titles before cold steel 3 have been localized by XSEED and not NISA. Obviously, NISA will tell you "buy my game. the ones from the other company aren't necessary."
After the cold steel arc, they release a 1-off title called "Trails into reverie". Trails into Reverie takes place 6 months after cold steel 4. The game has its own storyline, but it serves 2 other functions: 1) it wraps up loose plotlines left behind in the cold steel and crossbell arc. 2) it somewhat teases the potential future plot points of the next arc. For obvious reasons, you should not start with this game, and should only play it if you have finished the crossbell arc and cold steel arc, as it is a "somewhat final game" to both arcs.
and for the last arc that is currently available in the west. There is the Calvard Arc/Daybreak Arc. it consists of the trails into Daybreak titles, of which the first one was recently released in english on steam. Since I avoid spoilers, i cannot tell you much about them, but trails into daybreak 1 happens in 1208 in the country of calvard.
Also, if you research into all trails titles, you may have heard of a game called "Akatsuki no Kiseki". This is a spinoff game by a different company and designed as an mmo. It was only released in japanese and its servers shut down some years ago, aka it is unplayable (unless some madman somehow setup a private server for it).
