Can I make a cake stand from one piece of clay?

- In this video I show you how I make a cake stand from a single piece of clay. I throw the cake stand upside down, forming the plate and then the base. Then I let it dry and form the rim of the stand once the plate has dried to almost leather hard. There are some important steps along the way to ensure your cake stand does not crack as it dries. I discuss the type of clay I use for this project.
The YELLOW RIB featured in nearly every video has been with me for years and I use it for shaping, refining & compressing. I would never want to be without. It's hard to loose... and it just carries on. Along with my wheel - this is with me for the long haul!

Beautiful video and amazing explanation you have a gift❤
Thank you so much for your kind words 🙏
I've always wondered how these pieces are made in one piece. Now I know. Fascinating, thank you!!!
You are so welcome!
What a nifty way to create that lip!
It's a handy technique, hope it's useful to you!
Its perfect!!!
Thanks!
Do you have any tips for firing the piece? I’m always afraid that the sides will sink down
yes definitely.....the sinking issue is real with a form like this. .. my main tip here is to use earthenware. If you use stoneware and fire it to vitrification (as we usually do) the clay partially glassifies and so is prone to slumping. Particularly noticeable on this form as the outer edge is totally unsupported. With earthenware we generally don't fire to vitrification, meaning less slumping and sinking. (note: vitrification temperature will differ from clay to clay and depends on the clay composition)
Can you explain why you chose earthenware for this pot? I thought earthenware was less durable than stoneware. Is it easier to throw?
That's a great question. You are correct, earthenware is less durable than stoneware. However, neither is necessarily easier to throw than the other. There is just so much variation in terms of plasticity and texture in both categories of stoneware and earthenware clays.
The reasons i make these from earthenware has to do with slumping and shrinkage. Earthenware is often not fired to vitrification - (so, its still porous and, as you suggest, weaker) meaning it also does not tend to slump as stoneware would as it vitrifies. The cake stand pretty much comes out of the kiln as it goes in. If i made this plate in stoneware the outer edge of the plate would tend to slump around the middle stand at the higher temperatures. I also like that there is less shrinkage (a good deal of shrinkage happens at vitrification). Finally a cake stand is not something i use daily so happy to handle a little more carefully!
Hope this helps!
