Why I stopped trimming bottles (and you might too)!
In this video I make a sake set on the wheel. I take you through the whole process from wedging, through to throwing and finishing, and finally, warming some sake! Although this is a very simple project, I show you how to create a foot without trimming and how to square off your pots. I end up with gently altered forms that are nice to use.
Key takeaways: You do not always need to trim if you plan for it. Working in little studio
The YELLOW RIB featured in nearly every video has been with me for years and I use it for shaping, refining & compressing. I would never want to be without. It's hard to loose... and it just carries on. Along with my wheel - this is with me for the long haul!

Pulled handles simply explained for jugs and pitchers
Просмотров 69914 дней назад
In this video I make jugs (pitchers) on the wheel. Throwing a cylinder, adding a spout, pulling handles, trimming, and adding the handle are covered. I focus on pulling handles because it's a very traditional and very useful technique to master. But why do pulled handles cause so much difficulty? I show you step-by-step how to work through the process. So let's get started.... Not just for jugs...
Will my wheel thrown self-watering planter pot work?

3 ways to make the handle for a cup and saucer

In this video I show you how i make a cup and saucer on the wheel. Now there are so many different types of cups...light and refined, chunky and robust, with and without handles. Lovely jug. Most informative. Could you comment on the dimensions of the jug thrown from 1 kilo of clay?

    • @tufts.studio
      @tufts.studio 15 дней назад

      Thank you! Yes approximately 1 kilo of clay - in height approx 20 cm wet to ~ 18 cm when fired in height and in diameter approx 11 cm diameter to 10 cm fired. I varied the clay a little as I wanted a number of jugs that sit together so some variation in the group. The tallest was 22 cm final fired height. Very efficient in clay usage with very little trimming but the addition of a handle. They hold about 3/4 litre.

    I’ve heard you mention in several of your videos that you trim the base so that the bottom is concave. Can you explain why you do this? I have never heard that advice from other potter’s. Thank you. I enjoy your videos. They get right to the point and your demonstrations and explanations are clear and easy to follow.

    • @tufts.studio
      @tufts.studio 16 дней назад

      Good question.... If you trim the base so it has a subtle curve (that's slightly concave) a pot will sit well on a flat or not so flat surface.... It's just a simple thing that I think helps make a pot more functional. It takes very little extra time and I like to smooth and compress the surface anyway. Thanks for you kind words 😊

    Hello dear, I’ve been having some trouble with the cake holder. I made two pieces of these and both sagged, they suggested me to make the piece with a little arc up so when it dries it will not deform too much. I was also told to make the pieces separately and then glue them with the glaze. What do you think of this?

    • @tufts.studio
      @tufts.studio Месяц назад

      Oh, I'm sorry you're having problems with cake plates. Do they sag in firing or when you trim? If they sag during firing it means you are firing a little too hot. Cake plates with a large top slump when the clay is fired to a high temp (will be different for different clays through) as there is nothing supporting the plate. If they slump when your trim them or flip them over then they are not dry enough. Yes, I think if cake plates are troublesome - making in two parts is a good option. I am interested in the idea of attaching with glaze and then firing. This could work but a really good join will depend on the glaze and glaze fit. I think joining at leather hard and glazing and firing as per normal is a good solution. Good luck with cake plates!

    • @tufts.studio
      @tufts.studio Месяц назад

      That's a really good observation. So I am actually pushing down but my hand is at an angle. It feels like I'm pushing into the center of the clay. It's quite effective as the clay stays in a cone and the whole surface of the clay - from the bottom to the top gets re distributed. I'll try and draw a diagram that explains it better!
