    Hey man! I just wanted you to know that your videos are the reason I bought a m43 camera myself. After few weeks of thinking I went with OM-D E-M10 - same specs as E-PL7, but the design is far more attractive for me. I'm still in the process of learning the camera, but I'm already in love with it. Even thou the kit lens (14-42) is made poorly it still takes decent shots considering it's a starter. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for such a premium quality content you're putting on RUclips. It really is inspiring. Cheers!

    Funny how you keep saying you're not a selfie guy yet you describe and give more help about the selfie option than any other youtuber. Most helpful vid!

    The flip down direction of the "selfie screen" is useful when using the Olympus "touch-shutter" feature and keeping your hand/arm out of the picture.

    Great video, with lots of useful information. I'm an athlete looking to get into both photography and video in order to record my journey and have decided on the Olympus EP5 with my first lens being the 25mm. I have a gopro cam but soon realized that it wasn't the best option for most of my purposes. Thanks for the quality and honest information that you've provided

    I’ve had this camera for a long time and it’s fantastic. A big learning curve but grew into it.
    As an enthusiast.. I can’t imagine the vlogging TikTok kids understanding this masterpiece.

    Forgot to mention 30fps video is almost as cinemaric as 24fps film quality which is just what I want. They can keep 4k video which reminds one of a cheap soap opera video tape effect. Micro 4/3 is such an awesome, interesting and fun system. I recently got a cheap Chinese lens and filters which is reminiscent of my old lomography set up.

    Hi, are so visibile differences between pl7 and pl8. I did not understand about ibis, is optical right? Thanks do You get focus peaking with manual lenses?

    • @cirrusclouds8295
      @cirrusclouds8295 5 лет назад

      Epl7 and epl8 features and internal specs are almost identical. Epl8 make most changes to the external design. I prefer the look of the epl7, especially the grip. Both has IBIS, all epl series has them from the beginning. Ibis is mechanical, implemented around the sensor to compensate for movements. Epl7 onwards you get manual focys peaking.

    I use the selfie function all the time on my EPL5, for holiday pics of me and my wife; I find \they're much more personal than asking someone else to take the picture for you. Flipping down is more convenient, as flipping it upwards on the EPL5 is cumbersome, requiring 3 points of articulation, and always ends up with me firing the shutter accidentally. Btw, Olympus 9mm fisheye bodycap is the best selfie lens, also fun lens in it's own right, highly recommended!

    Hello! Best review of this camera I've seen thank you. Can you connect the camera to your phone and vote the live image during video mode? Could this compensate for the obscured flip down screen when using a tripod for filming?

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  9 лет назад

      Beautiful Recreations Unfortunately, no, Olympus's app doesn't let you record video through their app as a viewfinder. I think the EPL7 does support really short video clips recorded through the app, but not the full recording options you get without the app. It's frustrating -- my EP5 also has WiFi and I can't use it for video :/

    • @buzzi2k
      @buzzi2k 9 лет назад

      That's such a shame and baffles me why the apps don't support these things. I sometimes wonder whether they hold developments back so that there is something to upgrade to in the next model... I'm think about upgrading my compact camera to a Sony A5000 - I am a novice with manual controls but want to have something that performs better in lowlight that my current Nikon Coolpix (5mp). Do you happen to have any thoughts?

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  9 лет назад

      If you want good low light performance, focus on getting a fast lens. A lens with an aperture of f/1.8 will do great on Micro 4/3 cameras.

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  8 лет назад

      +Becca If you plan to use a tripod, maybe the Sony -- its screen flips upward, so you can use it in selfie mode with a tripod. If you don't use a tripod, the Olympus would be nice -- the build-in image stabilization is great for handheld stuff, and you won't mind that the front-facing screen covers the tripod connector.

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  8 лет назад

      Feby Lestari I've used tripods on my other (similar) cameras, good for really long exposures. The camera has a tripod mount on the bottom, so it should be straightforward.

      Michromatic thank you so much for your answer.. btw last thing i would like to know from your opinion, im considering to buy this camera, pen f or omd 5II .. which one do you think is better for photo (selfie) and video ?? .. have a nice day anyway 😊😊

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  8 лет назад +1

      Feby Lestari The EPL7 is best for one-handed selfies. Both the Pen-F and the EM5ii have flip-around screens, but they're not as easy to use as the EPL7's selfie screen. For video, all are solid -- the EM5ii has some advantages, but they're not huge IMO.
      Personally, I like the EM5ii because of handling advantages. Just personal preference.

    I have one. I have same issue with 2 shots in single frame mode. But as you said. It's not big deal. Bigger deal is I bought fast and expensive Lexar 32GB 600x. With this card inside it broke some photos. Totally randomly. But usually 1 per 100 photos. So after sales returns I have new one. Unfortunatelly problem remains. Although with older slower Kingston 16GB it work like a charm.
    I bought also VF4 which broke price advantage. But I like body compactness. Do I? I have Olympus 12-40 F2.8 which looks bit over-size on this camera. But those pictures ...

    Thank you for the tips in this video. You helped me to make my next camera purchase easier. I just downgraded from a OMD EM10 to a Pen EPL6. Yes!!! The EPL6! I have to say that I have owned several Olympus cameras and this Pen EPL6 is by far the best. I took a chance on it because they aren't any video reviews on this camera. This camera also has great video quality. I am very happy I got this camera and I am so looking forward to having fun with it. I think that there should be a review on this camera and you should be the man to do so since you are so good at it. Again, thank you and keep up the good work!Lionel OubichonDaly City, Ca

      +Lionel Oubichon I'm so glad I saw your comment because I absolutely want to get the Pen EPL6. But there aren't any reviews here on YT so it's a bit difficult. I've got a few questions for you if you don't mind answering them: does it have wifi capabilities (either built in or a substitute)?, do you think it'll do a good job for youtube videos if i purchase additional lenses?
      Many thanks, Stephanie

      +Stephanie O
      Dear Stephanie O,
      I am so happy to hear that you are interested in purchasing the Olympus EPL6 camera. I have to say that you will not be disappointed in the video quality on this camera. I am blown away when using the Olympus 17mm f1.8 m4/3 lens and also the kit lens(14-42mm) that comes with camera when shooting video. When using Wi-Fi, its best you a Wi-Fi SD card with plenty of storage. I bought the Toshiba card on Amazon which works really well with my smartphone. The only issue that have encountered is that to get the best white balance shooting indoors, you have to change it "tungsten " in the settings menu. This is personal preference. I love this camera and I think you will too! Enjoy!

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  9 лет назад +1

      +Stephanie O The camera doesn't have built-in wifi support, but you can get a wifi SD card (Eye-Fi Mobi is a solid choice) and do wifi image transfers with that.
      Olympus cameras generally don't have a lot of video features, but they produce perfectly good video --- if that makes sense. For example, all of my videos are recorded on Olympus EP5 (very similar to EPL6). I don't need the features that some other cameras have for video.

      Of those, I've only used the EPL7. The other two cameras are more comparable to Olympus EM10. My personal choice would be EM10 for in-body image stabilization and smaller lenses, but they're all quite good from what I understand.

  • @ShelbilunarmoxieHayes
    @ShelbilunarmoxieHayes 9 лет назад

    I'm considering this or the A5100. I do a lot of video, but I mostly will be doing blog posts and social media posting. I also cover music festivals and shows from time to time, so being able to have a good telephoto is important as well. What do you think would be best between the two?

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  9 лет назад

      +Shelbi “lunarmoxie” Hayes I don't know much about the Sony, except that it's an older camera. Both cameras will likely produce the results you're looking for.
      The difference will come down to size. An EPL7 with a long telephoto lens will be quite a bit smaller and lighter than the Sony. For the EPL7, look into the Olympus 40-150mm lens, which is surprisingly cheap and produces solid results. Here's an album of photos I've shot with this lens: www.flickr.com/photos/markryansallee/albums/72157653358801562

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  9 лет назад

      wil Orell In full Manual mode, you can press UP on the directional pad to engage shutter speed / aperture controls. Then, pressing UP and DOWN will adjust shutter speed, while LEFT and RIGHT adjust aperture.
      That said, I primarily shoot in Aperture-priority mode. In this case, the same UP direction engages exposure compensation, rather than shutter speed.

    I have an E PL6, but to be honest, I think the E P5 is probably better with it two dials to change settings. As I am using Four Thirds lenses
    I have a job holding the camera as the grip is small, making it harder to change settings. May have to get a bigger grip.

  • @danieldougan269
    @danieldougan269 9 лет назад

    Nice review...although it's pretty easy to avoid shaking a camera on a tripod for long exposure shots by just setting the timer on a 2s or 10s delay. You don't need a remote or WiFi to avoid the shaking, but I suppose it's still handy to have it. I have the E-PL5...it doesn't seem like there's a compelling reason to upgrade. Plus, doesn't the flip-down screen on that camera become a challenge when you're using a tripod? My E-PL5 screen flips UP, and I think that's better though the best of all would be a fully articulating screen that flips OUT.

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  9 лет назад +2

      Daniel Dougan A self-timer works well if you know up front how long you want your exposure -- dial in the exposure time, click self timer, and let it run.
      But if you're using live time (rather than bulb time) you can let the camera expose for as long as you need...and watch the exposure build on the LCD screen. When the exposure looks good, you click the shutter again to stop. Without a remote shutter, you risk shaking the camera for the second shutter press.
      The EPL5 is a great camera, and I agree that the screen flipping upward is more usable if you commonly use a tripod. That said, I still think the EPL7 is an immensely attractive upgrade, primarily because of the image stabilization. If I had an EPL5 and no other camera, I would absolutely be interested in the upgrade to EPL7.

    its way cheaper than both EPL-5 and 7???

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  9 лет назад +1

      +andre borges I don't have any experience with it, no. From what I've read, it's a mild improvement on the E-PL5. I've used the similar E-PM2, which was a great camera, but the E-PL7 is significantly nicer to use -- more metal construction, and the in-body image stabilization is a huge improvement.

      Fiddlydb The EPL6 is a great bargain -- good camera with a decent lens for $299. I personally would still go for the EPL7, though. The in-body image stabilization is a big step up in usefulness on the EPL7, and for me that's a big selling point. (I'm also really superficial and I like the looks of the EPL7 more.)
      Can't go wrong with either!

      Madeleine Rosie Which lens do you have?
      If you have the 14-42 EZ compact zoom lens, I believe it zooms electronically -- maybe touch screen buttons, or some camera controls mapped to it? Unfortunately I don't have experience with this particular lens, but do know that it probably doesn't zoom manually by twisting the lens, like some other lenses work.

    Just discovered your channel and honestly youve changed the way i look at 4/3's. And I'm probably going to to get a E-P5 . Question: Are you using a mic with the Olympus microphone adaptor? If so, which mic do you recommend? Your audio quality is great :) Thanks!

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  9 лет назад +1

      +Edward Jasper I originally bought the Olympus microphone adapter, but it's not good -- no matter what I did, I got a lot of cracking/peaking, like the amplifier is trying too hard. I thought I had a bad copy, so I had it replaced and had the same issue. I bought a different microphone and it still had the same issues when going through the mic adapter.
      I ended up getting a Zoom H1 to record into and it's much, much better. I use a cheap Giant Squid lav microphone. Syncing the audio + video later isn't a problem, and I prefer not having to have my microphone connected directly to the camera while recording.

    Great review :) I would love it if you could do a "45mm vs 25mm lens/photo review" on this camera - i can't seem to find a video that does just that, and i could really use that :)

    • @Tzadeck
      @Tzadeck 9 лет назад +1

      +Amalie Hentze There's really no need to because they're not competing lenses. Comparison reviews are helpful for similar lenses that are hard to choose between--maybe if you were comparing the 17mm 1.8, the 25mm 1.8, or the Panasonic 20mm 1.7.
      But a 25mm and a 45mm are not similar and are not used for the same thing--if you want a general use lens buy the 25mm; if you want a portrait lens buy the 45mm.

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  9 лет назад

      +Amalie Hentze I have separate reviews of both lenses. Very different field of view for each lens, so I say pick the one that fills a need best. 25mm is more useful in more situations, 45mm is better for portraits and other semi-tele shots. Personally, I think the 45mm is possibly the best lens for Micro 4/3, but it shouldn't be your first/only lens.

    @s89-f8k 9 лет назад

    Hi there, I am considering buying a mirrorless camera either the Olympus E-P5 or the E-PL7. i'm not big on taking selfies, i mostly just use my camera when i'm traveling (landscape). So a DSLR is never going to happen but with a point and shoot camera i'm just not that happy with the results. Wich camara do you prefer? (since you have been able to use both.) And do you know what kind of lens would be a good option for me?

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  9 лет назад

      +sippie sieperda Between those two, I prefer the E-P5, but mostly because it has a second control dial (and it's built to a higher price, so it feels a bit nicer). Both are great.
      As for a landscape lens, something like the Olympus 25mm (ruclips.net/video/4qANiuIBUEc/видео.html), Panasonic 20mm, or Panasonic 14mm should be a good compact choice.

      I have a 14-42 and a 19mm prime. I could easily be without the prime but the 14-42 is essential. Get the electronic zoom with it if it an option, because apart from anything else it is nice and compact.

      14-42 is good enough for outdoor photography, and anything else with good light. For low light stuff, you'll be better served with an f/1.8 prime lens like the 17/1.8.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

      Massoud Zamani All of those are good lenses. The 12mm and 25mm are both great for landscapes. 17mm can do the trick, but it doesn't pull details the way those other two do. That said, the 17mm seems very suited to street -- its rendering works really well on people, I find, despite the lack of sharpness. 45mm is naturally great for portraits.

      +Alice Lin When you buy an interchangeable lens camera (ILC), you usually have two options for a given camera: (1) Body-only, which is the camera with no lens, and (2) A kit, that comes with the camera + a "kit" lens. Usually, the camera kit is cheaper than buying the same camera body + lens separately, though the lens may or may not be what you want.
      For Micro 4/3, my favorite starting lens is either the Olympus 25mm f/1.8, or the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7. Both are so good. Here's my review of the 25/1.8: ruclips.net/video/4qANiuIBUEc/видео.html

    Hello! I am looking to buy a micro 4/3 camera and I really like Olympus. I've been looking into the EPL 6, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find any detailed reviews of it, at least not ones that weren't posted right after it was released that are just a sales pitch. Could you tell me, is it really that much worse than the EPL 7? Everyone is praising it since it's the new model, but the difference in price is about 200 euros where I live and that's a huge difference for me. I've completely discarded my old compact and I want to buy a good Micro 4/3 that will last me a few years and ease into amateur photography, so is it worth investing in the ELP 6, or the EPL 7?

    • @Michromatic

      @Michromatic  9 лет назад +1

      GKhanKutar It's impossible to say without seeing your photos. Mind sharing something? A Flickr link is good 'cause it'll also include EXIF data.
      Without seeing the photos, my guess is that your EPL5 is just fine -- there's no problem there, it's a great camera. I use an EPM2 which is basically the same camera, minus some features.
      The 45mm f/1.8 lens will give you a lot better low-light performance. But it will also give you a narrower depth of field, which means it'll be easier to get blurry, out-of-focus shots if you're not careful.
      Again, example photos with EXIF data will let me help you a lot better.

      GX7 has that second dial + viewfinder all the kids love. Personally, I'd still swing for the EPL7 because of the in-body image stabilization. GX7 has it as well, but it's not active during composition and Olympus's is in a class of its own.

    And you know what I am now teaching him how to use the kitlens to make decent portrait. It isn't impossible if you know the tricks.

    As for the EPL7, looks like a good upgrade to the EPL5, but price now puts it on par with the Panasonic GX7, which has all the same features but with an EVF and extra control dial. Good camera but should be priced at entry level.

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  10 лет назад

      It is priced at entry level, but the GX7 has the benefit of having been around for over a year and prices have come down. The GX7 is a great camera, but I might still go for the EPL7, despite the missing control dial -- the in-body image stabilization on the GX7 isn't any help for manual focus, and my favorite lens is my old 38mm Pen-F lens.

    • @attentionaddicts
      @attentionaddicts 10 лет назад

      Michromatic what's wrong with the GX7 IS, still works with adapted lenses right? Also I heard EPL7 finally has focus peaking to help manual focus; how is it?

    • @Michromatic
      @Michromatic  10 лет назад

      GX7's IBIS is like the IBIS on the EPL7's predecessor -- it's active only during the exposure, not during composition. So it won't hold your view steady while you compose + manual focus.
      Focus peaking on the EPL7 is pretty solid, very similar to my EP5 except that it doesn't seem to reduce the framerate the way my EP5 does. You still get only white/black options, but it's very easy to use. (I still prefer magnification to focus peaking.)

Another thing that I'm a little afraid is the 16mp sensor, because I have already a 12mp (D5000 Nikon) and I wanted something bigger, that I could crop more easily (I'm a beginner with a lot of studying time heheh) and still have a decent image. Is the IQ on the EM5II a LOT worse than the A6000 or the difference in quality won't be a real matter for someone who will never go pro and only sees the images on computer? I might print a pic or two to hang in my wall, but I'm not that kind of guy that looks for every mistake or bad thing on a picture. I won't shoot a lot of sports. Please, help me.. I've been asking around, reading and studying for the past two months and I still can't decide. Thanks in advance.

      I haven't used the A6000, but I've read quite a bit about it. Sounds like an awesome camera that excels at autofocus (not that M43 cameras are bad at it). I wouldn't worry much about quality differences between the sensors. APS-C isn't that much bigger than M43, and Olympus cameras are using Sony sensors anyway (or so I read).
      Having used cameras with 5-axis in-body image stabilization, I would have a hard time going back to something else. Sony's got a new A7 with IBIS, but lenses are still quite large for it, even if the body is small.
      And FWIW, I just got some 16" x 24" prints of my 16MP photos and they turned out fantastic. More resolution could be useful, but I'm not missing it.

      Michromatic That's nice. I thought about the MFT because of its lenses and I think they are better than the Sony ones. Doing some math, I'll probably end up between the EM10 or the EM5 mark I, because I want to spend more on lenses than in the body and I don't have a lot of money to just spend in everything. I'll have to wait until August to buy either way, so I'll keep looking and thinking about it. From what you've said and other people too, the IQ doesn't seem to be that different.
      The A7 II is too expensive for me, can't do and I was looking for something smaller, thus the APS-C or MFT.
      Thank you!

      For me, it's IBIS + the compact size of the entire system that makes M43 my ideal choice. Fuji is attractive, but no IBIS. Sony A7 is attractive, but the native lenses are massive. A6000 is attractive, but the lenses aren't much smaller than standard DSLR lenses.

      Michromatic I see. I started liking the M43 because of the compactness as well. I haven't seen one in person, but I've watched thousand of videos and read a lot and I think I will like the system just as well I like the others. I won't buy FF because they are massively big and my purpose is to have the camera with me most of the time. What do you think about the Panasonic GX7? It seems a nice camera.

      Yup, GX7 is a great camera. Only feature I would miss is IBIS in live view -- it has in-body image stabilization, but it's only active during exposure, not composition.

    I think the E-M10's extra control dial and EVF is worth extra $100. Actually I've seen the E-M10's price drop a $100 on Amazon or B&H from time to time. But no selfie capabilities :) Ever thought about upgrading to the new E-M5 Mk2 or E-M1? E-M5 is just too sexy to resist.

      My main camera is the Pen EP5. While the new EM5 is tempting, I don't think it does much beyond what my EP5 does. The 40MP trick would be fun to play with, but wouldn't be a factor in most of my photography I don't think.
      All those customizable buttons, though...

    Do you know if this lens is good, like if you still get nice pictures? M.Zuiko 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 II R? I found this camera with this lens as a kit.

      It's a solid lens. It won't work great in low-light situations, but outdoors it'll take photos as well as most anything.

    i don't know what camera i shold buy. The lumix FZ1000 looks very nice, but i don't know if the lens of it will go wide enough for me.
    Cameras like this one also look nice, but i think, they are a bit small for me. I would like to have a big camera with good ergonomics.
    Can someone recomend me, what i should buy?

      +StarTrek123456 The Lumix FZ1000 goes very wide, you'd need a special wide-angle lens to get much wider.

    nice review - thanks - LCD going down is useless when on a Tripod :) so better to flip up or better yet to the side like on the new Panasonic GF7 and GH4 OMD-EM5mII etc - but I now see the EPL7 for $399 so considering - although I own 2 Panasonic GX7's and a GM1 and GX1 and Oly OMD-EM5 and EM1 and LX100 :) - never enough bodies - I hate swapping lenses - body and lens on M43 just so small anyway
