I was not aware that Prince was a rather good guitarist until I saw the Tom Petty, Jeff Lyne tribute to George Harrison performing While My Guitar Gently Weeps. That was brilliant. Shame then that he butchers this classic and sings it like a girl.
Old fart hard core rocker here, born when Eisenhower was President, and still jamming it hard. I've been there for them all, all the "guitar gods" throughout the rock era, from Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley and Jimi Hendrix, to SRV and EVH, and everyone in between. But that moment at 2:34 when he stopped the solo and walked off with that pure Prince swagger, that's the moment when I jumped out of my chair and started screaming. "Oh my God, what did I just hear?! Are you kidding me?!" That was fricking otherworldy. I think Jimi himself would be proud of this guy.
That sums up what I was thinking when I saw his performance. He walked out front and center and blew the socks off of that song. Fantastic! Clapton’s solo on the White album was incredible Prince’s interpretation is otherworldly.
Things to take from this: Prince knew the song, deeply; knew how it was performed live by Led Zep, and how Jimmy Page worked the guitar, deeply; knew the ins and outs of it, knew the things to keep and the things to draw from and the things where there was space. And that's true every time -- every time -- he takes on another person's song, whether it's Joni or Dave Grohl or whatever. He knows that song as close as can you can get to the person who wrote it. He knows how that song was made.
He took a song that everyone has heard a thousand times by a band that is known around the world and completely made it his own. Prince was a better musician than anyone is at anything. RIP to the G.O.A.T.
Not really made it his own...Of course,I love Prince, but to make a cover "your own" we are talking about "All along The Watchtower" by Hendrix or "Hurt" by Johnny cash, this version Just doesn't quite cut it

Many many famous bands have covered their songs, so I’m guessing there’s only so much they can “Love”, such as Alien Ant Farm covered and released their tribute to MJ’s Smooth Criminal, sounded and played very well just heavier in sound due to type of band and the tempo was slightly increased.... I’m sure MJ would’ve “LOVED” that too.....
The song was actually written by Willie Dixon and recorded originally by Muddy Waters under the title 'You Need Love'. Willie Dixon sued Led Zeppelin for claiming credit for his song, and he won. Check out Muddy Waters' version by searching youtube for 'you need love muddy waters'. Never a sex scandal? The girl he ended up having the baby with was literally 15 or 16 when they started seeing each other in the 90s & she moved in with him. Be for real. & that was actual fact; the person who you MAY be eluding to was found innocent of all false allegations. It was just that no deal was made of the Prince thing.
And they say he died of an overdose! The Greatest To Ever Do It!! Rest In Power Messenger!!
@@HhEeAaDdLotta misinformation here. That girl was about 17 when she went to one of his concerts. He met her again when she was older and remembered her face.
@@moustachio334He told her “Pretty sure I’ve come across your face before”.
Ironically the end of this performance is about violence against women. (regardless of the fact that Prince is one of the greatest guitarists in the world)
Man, if you never got to see Prince live in concert you would have no idea how really great he was with the guitar
Scott Burch I never did see him. One of my few regrets in this life. RIP
Bro, he's the greatest of all time....and I am a huge Zeppelin fan!.....
Marbella 1990. Batman dancing with the classics . Bit too much Batman
@@mjordan601 Yes mate he’s allowed 👍🇬🇧
He was so kind and gracious to his fans even to us in Salt Lake City we are such a small market often overlooked, not him he shared how much he loved our state and people! We adore soul
This guy was an elite guitar player. Very impressed.
Prince was a powerhouse of music, playing 27 instruments and he played with everyone from Madonna, Stevie Wonder, Gwen Stefani, Sheila E.,and many more. There is a void in the music world without him!
in heaven prince and jimi jamming togather
And someone actually compared Michael Jackson to Prince! As if!!
@@nancydemoss8421 i would say MJ is a better singer but other then that prince has him beat
did he sleep with most of the above (ha)
Playing 27 instruments WELL.
My 2 favorites Prince and Led Zeppelin 😮💜💜💜💜
Prince was one bad ass dude. He took this classic and made it his. Absolutely amazing. He is missed.
He butchered this song!!
He absolutely shreds on the guitar and may possibly be the most underrated guitarist of all time, but come on, man. Whole Lotta Love will never belong to anyone other than Zeppelin.
He gave it back to its originator.
@@j.j.upright4010 Then why are you here? :D
@@fungusjoe5005 he hates to see Peince shine on a song he thinks belongs to his social circle.
Same type of dude finally discovering Prince that couldn't fathom rock guitar came from black people as opposed to us "learning" from it the from the Brits
Whole Lotta Love doesn't get funkier than this - lots of purpleness into this cover, making it quite unique as only Prince can - brilliant
One of the greatest musicans of all times. So gifted, so creative. Genius.
Wow this is incredible. Love the funk he added.Yes unless you’ve watched a live performance you don’t get the magnitude of his guitar skills from just listening to his pop songs.
All I have to say is that you had to have seen,"PRINCE LIVE IN CONCERT."
I'm 61yrs.and have seen LED ZEPPELIN, VAN HALEN,THE WHO, STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN, RANDY RHOADS WITH OZY,PINK FLYOD,AC/DC,PLANT AND PAGE AND THE LIST GOES ON INTO THE HUNDREDS.
PRINCE is one of the greatest guitarist I've ever seen and he is a F×CKING MONSTER!
I agree he is underrated as a guitarist but he was amazing and could play just about any instrument. PRINCE was a musical Genius!
RIP PRINCE ❤
ENOUGH SAID!!!👍✌️✌️
I was not aware that Prince was a rather good guitarist until I saw the Tom Petty, Jeff Lyne tribute to George Harrison performing While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
I, too, was born when Eisenhower was President, and I agree with you.
RIP To one of the best multi-instrumentalists /stage performers out there! Dude was amazing live, and he rocked it.! 💜💜 Prince!
He truly slayed that solo. Prince showed the world what he was capable of on the guitar that night.
Every gig he showed what he was capable of!
He showed a long time before.
RiP Guitar. Only a genius would think to lay down their guitar to rest and treat it with the respect it deserves.
Guitar says"Somebody slap me!"

Mr. Hendrix… lay down his guitar… set it on fire…
He took a song that everyone has heard a thousand times by a band that is known around the world and completely made it his own. Prince was a better musician than anyone is at anything. RIP to the G.O.A.T.
Not really made it his own...Of course,I love Prince, but to make a cover "your own" we are talking about "All along The Watchtower" by Hendrix or "Hurt" by Johnny cash, this version Just doesn't quite cut it
No
This is my favorite song...by my favorite band...whose guitarist is the one responsible for me becoming a guitar player....as for Prince...although he may not be my favorite artist...he ranks high, but even higher is my respect for his unbelievably raw talent...I have never seen any individual who is both immeasurablevin STYLE and SUBSTANCE.....if Midas' touch was Gold...his was a mix of platinum and diamond..... And then he turned them purple...!

This man... wow! He was one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. He always had accolades for his songwriting, his voice, and his musicianship mostly on keyboards and synthesizers, but very rarely as a guitarist. We lost many men in losing just one. We were blessed to have him and the gifts he bestowed upon us in our lifetime...
Breathtaking. The man was a visionary, a one off.
I've been lucky enough to see both Zeppelin & Prince, and they are musicians first and foremost, creative geniuses. Love this
Yeah, you were lucky and i envy you
Omg....you're so lucky! I'm jealous man! If only I could've had the privilege to see Prince live in concert!
There will never be another Prince. The mark of a true rock star is they cannot be replicated. Fans know who they are.

Was there anything that Prince couldn’t play and just kill it???

What a creative, musical genius he truly was.
He wasn't underrated. He was phenomenally brilliant. The Zappa of the modern age!

Yea maybe, but then again how many hundreds of covers of their song has been done..?
Incidentally, all of the above applies to 'Killing Floor' which is also from LZ's second album and also was written by Willie Dixon (but originally recorded by Howlin' Wolf).
