Setting Up Rainwater Harvesting - Off Grid Water at my Scottish Cottage Homestead

  • This week I set up some rain water harvesting so I'll be able to have off-grid water for my future vegetable garden! (As usual, it wasn't without challenges and it took twice as long as anticipated!)
    Thank you for following along as I set out on my journey to breathe life into my old cottage and build a back yard homestead in rural North East Scotland. I'm collecting questions for an upcoming Q&A video to celebrate 25k subscribers - if you have any questions about the cottage / me / my life in Scotland, leave them in the comments!
    FIND ME:
    / rewildingjude
    LINKS:
    The podcast I referenced is the Homesteading UK Podcast and you can find it here: open.spotify.c...
    MY STORY:
    I've been stuck in rut for the past couple of years - both my parents passed away at the end of 2022 and since then I've been navigating grief, burnout and just being scared to make a change. I decided that 2024 was going to be the year I set my life on fire, because life is too short to spend all of it wondering just what the point is. So I quit my job, sold my house in the suburbs and bought a 150yr old cottage in the middle of the Scottish countryside. Follow along as I attempt to renovate this little stone house, build a backyard homestead and hopefully fall in love with life, all over again.
    Spoiler alert - I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, so almost anything could happen

    Two things. Back down the torque on your drill. It's not the shaft splitting the wood but the force of the screw head being pulled into the pilot hole. The other thing is, keep going brother. You can offset the holes opposite sides of the central so you don't put them both in the same grain lines too if you want extra insurance on short lengths (and it's somewhere you can accept the visual upset)

    The asbestos panels are unlikely to hurt you unless you break or cut them. As long as it stays intact, it's probably ok, especially if you keep it outdoors. You can encapsulate them, too, paint works. They could be quite useful otherwise. You could cut them, as long as it stays wet, quite wet, and then encapsulate the edges.

    Hi Jude. I find the simplest and easiest way to solve the problem of downpipe dropping is to hold the downpipe in the required position and drill a tiny hole through the bracket into the downpipe and pop a black screw in the hole. I find too that a ball made from an old small piece of chicken wire placed in the gutter at the top of the downpipe stops leaves going down the pipe. It can easily be removed when required for cleaning. Thanks for another good video. 🍂🍁🌿👍

    I'm so excited to see you back to RUclips! As an archaeologist, and self-proclaimed expert on digging holes - I would recommend finding someone with a grinding stone who can put an edge on your spades and then pick up a set of files to keep the edges sharp. This way you're actually cutting through the dirt, plants, roots, and etc instead of scooping them. I'm not sure who/where you would have that done in Scotland, but someone at a garden center or DIY place would probably know.

      This is exactly the expertise I need! Now files I have (thanks Dad!) but I’ll see if I can find someone with a grinding stone - I bet the local men’s shed group can help me out! (And I want to join whatever it is they get up to, so that’s an excuse to go along and check it out!)

    Thumbs up for dads kindling store. And for another great video. 👍👍 Not sure that pushing your self prapeld mower is a good idea in respect of the working life of your mower but I could be wrong. Your guttering spacing blocks either need a bigger pilot hole or at the very least a dent to countersink the screws. As the head of your screw fattens out it is splitting the wood..

    • @rewildingjude
      @rewildingjude  2 дня назад +3

      Ahhh that makes total sense! Thank you!!
      I’ll investigate the self propelled function of the mower - and see if pushing it damages it! Hopefully not as turning corners while it’s self propelling is tricky! 😂😂

    • @catsmother4556
      @catsmother4556 2 дня назад +4

      @@rewildingjude I have a similar mower and you get used to turning it. You can of course release your grip on the go forward bar. I tend to just pull back on the mower whilst turning. You will get plenty of practice next summer.

    • @catsmother4556
      @catsmother4556 2 дня назад +1

      @@rewildingjude have just googled to see if pushing the mower causes damage. The general consensus seams to be that it does no harm. Good to know.

    A kids plastic sled also come in handy to haul things in the snow. You could use the plastic barrel to catch water for flowers or plants that you are not going to eat. If you need something for that....or I am sure you will find a use for it!

    Congrats on getting the self-propelled feature on the lawn mower to work, and on getting the water storage sussed out!
    I noticed the English ivy growing on the shed and its foundations behind your water barrels. I’m not sure how vigorously it grows in your part of Scotland, but here in NC in the States it can get between foundations and the building sills, get behind siding, and allow moisture in to rot out sheathing. It also can destroy mortar on brickwork and chimneys. You might want to get that bit of ivy pulled out before the barrels get rain filled.
    For your Q&A: How far is it or how long does it take you to get to a grocery store or your DIY store? Or in other words, just how far out in the boonies are you??? And, are you likely to have power outages during winter storms? If yes, what are your plans for managing water, light, cooking, and heat if that happens. (When I was living in the boonies and was on a well, we didn’t have a backup generator, so no power = no well pump = no water.) I’m feeling a bit like a mother hen wanting to know you will be warm and fed and watered as winter nears. harpingJanet
