I’ve watched the first few seconds of this video about 30 times lol! I’ve been there many times myself….
I can’t believe that happened 🤦🏼♂️ But I figured leave if in the video 😁
@@SladesVWBeetle I’m glad you did. It adds more feel to the video plus I love a good laugh.
Always entertaining and educational
Thank you my friend!!
Appreciate the explanation on how these work (and why)
Thank you! This Friday, my video will be up of mounting the beam, and mounting the shims. And a few other things.
@jujulips4824 yes, actually Friday the new video will be up and resume as normal. I took a few weeks off after 3 1/2 years. I’m actually editing the one for Friday right now lol thank you for staying tuned in.
@jujulips4824 thank you very much. I truly appreciate that. I even announced at the end of the video that will be out Friday, I will be doing a live chat Sunday night, 9 PM Eastern time. Thank you for checking on me. I truly appreciate that.
And, I actually have my phone in my hand and seen the notification that you posted lol
I recently lifted the front of my Baha, and was experiencing a lot of wandering. I had heard about caster shims but never got a definitive answer as where to put them on the top or bottom. Thank you so much for explaining this. Great video. I may add this to my channel. But will give you credit sir. Thanks again.
Thank you, sir! I appreciate that. Yes, when you’re lifting, they go at the top of the beam beat. You already know that. It will make a difference my friend.
I just looked these up on apple tree and noticed they come in different degrees of thickness also. My Baja is lifted pretty extreme. Cut and cranked with thing trailing arms and spindles. So I’m thinking probably I need the thicker ones.
And they’re out of stock, of course.
@@larrymcgarage2152 You can double the standard 1/4 inch sets. But definitely longer bolts
@larrymcgarage I have a 63 baja with a stock kingpin front beam. It has adjusters on both beams but I don't know how to raise them higher to get a bit more front end lift.
Do you have or know of any videos I can refer to?
There's more adjustment on the set screws/bolts but the preload on the torsion bars won't let me go any further if that makes sense?
Thanks
Great beginning 😂
Only me these things happen too 🙄
Thanks for commenting my friend!
I always learn something new with all of your videos! Thanks Slade!
Thank you my friend. I truly appreciate the kind words.
Do not add caster shims to the top beam on a lifted Baha , put them on the bottom. Ask me how I know. Lol . Tried and tested.
Thank you for chiming in my friend! I never did one lifted I was only going by what I read. But I’m glad you said something.
Great info ! I started slowly rebuilding my bug and purchased the shims for my front beam due to the instability of the front steering on the freeway. Glad you did this video ❤
Thank you! This coming week, I will be mounting the beam with the shims and longer bolts. But I’m also going to show mounting the steering box with shims in place. Because sometimes you have to shift it slightly.
I totally agree with adding these in many situations, ESPECIALLY if you do any freeway driving! The difference in directional stability at speed is phenomenal. I can easily run 75, 80 MPH now easily. These cars were designed with a lack of caster for easier steering, but ther easily a trade-off in stability. WELL worth it... as well as a proper 4 wheel alignment
Thank you for chiming in, and taking the time to leave a comment. I truly appreciate it. Funny brought that up, I said about getting a four wheel alignment done to somebody on their Beetle, and they looked at me like I was an idiot. 🤷♂️
@@SladesVWBeetleLOL! Some feel that a garage alignment is enough, but after experiencing that and a proper 4 wheel i totally disagree. My '75 standard was so far off in the rear. I can now actually throw it into corners hard up here in the hills of western Mass and its now totally planted, and doesn't feel like I'm going to launch into the woods. Took the highways from here to a VW show in NYC last summer and it was fantastic on the highway
I am a machinist, and that was .248 plus or minus .002😂
I miss know machinists!!! My buddy was one but retired 🙁
Great intro to the video. Thanks for the info. Gulf cans are awesome!
Thank you!!
A friend’s fairly stock ‘67 was uncontrollable at speeds over 50 mph until he installed caster shims.
Yes, they truly make a big difference!
This video starts off like my hole week 😅
I was going to edit that out of the film. But I figured I might as well leave it in. I know how you feel my friend. 😂
@@SladesVWBeetle I like how you keep it real!
@@iddybiddyladybugleeza262 thanks my friend. I don’t like to edit anything out, so people realize when things go wrong, it’s not just them. 😁
Interesting! Plus, I learned a new German automotive term: "titch"!! :}} (Actually, I use that term a lot when I'm measuring stuff). Have a good weekend!!
Thanks for chiming in my friend, I hope you have an amazing weekend.
Another awesome video Brother thanks for sharing!!!!
Thank you, brother! I truly appreciate you.
Nice video. When you add the shims, you need to also remove the small line up tabs on the bottom of the beam where the steering box clamp goes on. Because it changes the angle of the steering shaft of the steering box, to the steering column. This information is from samba, that I have read over the years. I need to do this upgrade to my bug also.
Yes, exactly. Although my tabs are on the top tube of the beam. It does really help, I have also read a lot on this and watched quite a few videos. I’m going to test fit the beam this week. So I’ll make sure I bring that up.
@@SladesVWBeetle Yes, test fit the beam with the steering box and shims in place.. You might be okay. You never know with aftermarket parts.
@@vintage76vipergreenBeetle yes, you are very right about that my friend. I’m going to test fit everything on the next video.
@SladesVWBeetle
Looking forward to see how it going to line up.
Thanks for the video Slade !! Question do you have to pull the beam out or can you just loosen it and slide them behind the beam.
Hey my friend!
You do not have to remove the beam. Just loosen all four bolts very slightly, and then take a crowbar and pry the bottom of the beam slightly just enough to slide the shims in.
And then of course, pull the bottom two out and put your longer bolts in.
I’m going to be doing the install this coming week.
So I’m going to go over quite a few things like checking the angle of your steering box.
It might not affect it, but if it does, It’s easy to adjust. Stay tuned brother I’ll be showing that in about four days.
Great video,, good advice
Thanks my friend I truly appreciate that and I hope you’re doing well.
This is just the video I wanted to see. I have a lowered beam, and it came with these Shims, but no bolts(I bought someone's project) and was wondering if I needed the Shims or not, and now I know. Thanks.
I have a question, Is it a bad idea to use lowered spindles with an adjustable beam?
You are perfectly fine using lowering spindles with an adjustable beam. If you scroll back a few videos, I show the beam, with the lowering spindles on them. Make sure you get the longer bolts, and also adjust your steering box if needed so it’s not off.
Long time listener and follower reaching out because I know you helped me through a lot of projects with videos, got a question I own a 73 super beetle and has a sun roof people are telling me it’s called a sun bug and they are rare. This true. And they are telling me they were suppose to come out in 1974 and not 1973. So that makes them rare and idea or thoughts. Thanks again
Thanks for being here. I truly appreciate it! There was a couple of different special edition beetles back in the day. I do remember hearing about the sun bug, this is what I found with a few people chatting back-and-forth about it.

@@SladesVWBeetle thanks for all the help that helps me out a lot. Guess now I gotta get it finished and on the road
nice job.
Thanks, Jim! I hope you’re having a really nice day.
cool. mine WAnders , i wonder why yours WOnders?
I’m wondered that myself 😁 I’m definitely doing shims though they do help
@@SladesVWBeetle thanks for video. 05:20 when you say the wheels move further back at higher speeds, that makes no sense to me.
I'm running a airkweld narrowed beam with air shocks ... would you recommend i put these on my bug? Its a 1958
Honestly, I think they do great for lowered beams. But also like I suggested in the video on stock, Beetles also.
When you hit around 60 to 65 miles an hour if you fill up wandering around the road a little bit or a slight wobble in the steering wheel. It’s a great idea.
@SladesVWBeetle thanks so much for the info ...its winter here in canada, so it's so perfect tome to do it.
Do you think a stock beam with only dropped spindles requires shims given you are not adjusting the trailing arms and keeping the geometry the same?
You can do drop spindles with a stock beam, as I have done before. If you are at 60 MPH going down the highway and it’s smooth and doesn’t start wandering around then I would leave it alone. But I did describe in the video, it even helps stock beetles out. That are wandering on the highways.
@@SladesVWBeetle thanks!
You’re welcome Jeff. I hope you have a great day.
Got a problem i bought a sand rail and the motor is not level how can I fix it thanks
Did the hood get dented?
No, thankfully!!! I think I just sat there and stared for a moment because I couldn’t believe it happened.
I’m going back down the salvage yard Sunday. I’ll probably do a little filming. I have to grab some thing. He asked me if I wanted that blue 77. I’m still tempted to do it.
@SladesVWBeetle
It up to you. If the car is solid and the price is right.
It’s definitely solid. Just the rear floor pan behind the driver seat. Otherwise the car is extremely solid. Especially for where I live. It’s cheap and has a title.
@SladesVWBeetle
Buy it, fix it and sell it. Just my opinion. You and Heather may have a hard time selling it after you drive it around for a while.
