  • Just a random explore in Gosport.
    We visit the Browndown Battery
First erected in the mid-1840s, the battery was continuously modified until disarmed in 1905/6. It has been a Grade II listed building since 1983.

Browndown Fort was used by 63 (SAS) Signal Squadron (Volunteers) a Territorial Army Unit of the Royal Signals (now known as 63 (UKSF) Signal Squadron of the Army Reserve), they moved to Thorney Island, the building that you described as a factory was the base. In the 1990s the base was still on a care and maintenance basis by the MoD, and there were MOD Security Guards (MGS) looking after the place. The reason was that there was an HF radio mast and transmitter there, and because it was right on the coast meant that its signal could be received all over Europe and across the Mediterranean. Because there was ongoing conflict in the Balkans in the 90s the mast was required so the British Army had a reliable and secure radio link in the theatre of operations. The British Army started off as peacekeepers with the UNPROFOR and then became part of the NATO-led IFOR and SFOR. Personally, I think the MoD made a mistake closing the place down, you shouldn't rely on satellites for COMMS

Battery 2 was part of the Stokes Bay Lines and was built along with the 1860 forts in the area.
