Good god, I know this was a VERY early Gameboy game and with an inexperienced team behind it, but the fact it was given the green light with how slow it is baffles me. On a different note, I've noticed that with a lot of older Konami games, especially the 16-bit ones, the less stages there are, the greater their length (and usually their games on the SNES had more stages than on the Genesis; funny that). Not an inherently good or bad thing, just something I've picked up on. Also, updating the counter presentation was a good call!
According to a friend who did some research on gameboy screens, the reason some games would flicker background tiles was to sync up with thr GB screen refreshrate and give the illusion of a 5th shade of grey that's only possible on original hardware... this technique was abbandoned the moment the Super gameboy's released due to not working on TVs
Yeah, some games like Link's Awakening also used the flickering sprites to simulate transparency, like in the credits. Ghosting was both a blessing and a curse for that LCD screen, since it was also the reason many GB games were deliberately made slow.
i can understand your reasoning behind your score, but I enjoyed the game for what it was, especially the music. Then again, I played it over 30 years ago. While I think nostalgia is a legitimate reason to like a game, I think this may be one of those "rose tinted goggles" moments on my part.
1/10? Well, it's close enough to a flat 0, so I'll allow it. Actually, this review reminded me of my own on this game. You're a lot more forgiving than I am, though. I hate this game. Every cell in my body hates this game. Also, new text is a neat idea but is a bit unreadable at times.
As someone who has played the game for a bit, it is pretty bad. Good video overall. But then again, the Adventure Rebirth (more of a reimagining than a remake) overhauled the whole game and created a far more enjoyable experience.
If Rebirth had as many levels as Super Castlevania 4 or Castlevania III It'd be among the best games in the series for sure. The level design, music and looks were all really good.
"Christopher Belmont is so lethargic that you have to wonder if he's even medically certified to go on this adventure." lmao
Either that, or the 1500's mafia gave him a new pair of cement shoes but didn't have any nearby bodies of water to dunk him in.
Excellent comments/analysis!!! Good job !!!

The fact that we had to add in the Tiger electronics games as opposed to the NES games honestly tells everyone all they need to know about this title.
Another great review, and the editing is even better than it already was!
Its crazy that there are even worse games than this one out there but at least those aren't canon, unlike The Adventure.
