Correct guys! It's always one of the best choices to grab in improvising over dominant chords, especially to bring out that #4, which is the #11 over the octave. So instead of playing straight mixo, play that instead, it's more hip, it's the modern sound the Jazz and fusion cats use! I'm a guitar player, and I learned this years ago when I went to GIT from people like Robben Ford. Use it in the Blues, it makes your chops be way more cool and interesting!
This is the kind of music that after listening to it for song long, finally pushed me to buy a digital piano and start learning on my own. I want to play stuff like this. 😍🥰
Open Studio, please consider transcribing these gospel improvs of Peter and put them in a course. I would love to pay to see this in notation and just play it all day long.
Can't get enough of that walkup with the B7 flat 13! That seems like one of those modal mixture things too, since usually the iii of G would be B minor (or it's a tritone substitution for F7).
When's the Open Studio gospel course coming out already? 🤣 You guys been teasing us with these for too long... maybe it's already in the works... ? 😁🤞🏼
I'm guessing peter got some of this language from keith jarrett, even if it's not explicitly gospel. check out his version of god bless the child with his trio, also some of the american quartet stuff and some of his solo piano stuff. also check out nina simone.
Both G9sus4 and Db9 serve in propelling the resolution into IV. Another way to think of it and play it would D-9 Db9 into C. ~> So, a chromatic II V into the IV. Among other things Peter’s playing up the value of tweaking chord quality. MANY of the tastiest, slickest and most satisfying chord substitutions are chords that are simply tweaked to be a half step off/ away. It just requires hearing things well in advance and playing things with finesse so they’re made to work. The III which would diatonically have been minor became B7 leading us chromatically into IV. The IV itself (which diatonically would otherwise be Cmaj7) at one point was blueisfied to become C7. (Then, C-7 F7 leading into I from a whole step below would also be possible if you chose to fit that in.) The II which would diatonically have been minor became a II7 at one point ~ A7. So, II7 V7 I. Even the I chord could be played as a dom7. Then you’ve more fully made this into a blues progression than something so centrally gospel.
start from the basics, build from there... it's a long road but it's def worth it. But start from the bottom I would recommend. There's this amazing grace reharm (jazz duets) that represents the levels quite well.
These shorts from open studio are crucial....so many things to learn
Very true
Am I the only one who the problem is that generally when I see them I'm not near a piano?
@@garycitro1674nah, happens to the best of us 😂
@@garycitro1674universal problem usually 😂
@@garycitro1674 ....hahaha.....the same happens to me.😊
That piano sounds.. amazing, even on a mobile phone.. Nice.
42 listens later and still binging. What sheer beauty
I learn so much more from these 50 second shorts than I could in a 3 hour video
All in the instruction! They are great!
F13(#11) is just sublime.
F, A, B, C, D, Eb. Literally every note in the mixolydian-flat-6 except the tonic!
@@alexandersmith6140it’s almost just C melodic minor 😂 if you flip a bass note

These guys make the most addictive musical shorts!
Wow! That's some of the best gospel piano I've heard. It'll keep me out of trouble for a bit while I try to work out those gorgeous chord sequences.
Oh, sic! That F9sus - E9sus - Eaug#9 hurt me so good! 😊❤
Your gospel playing gives me chills…
I could listen to peter playing and explaining music theory as if it was a song. It just sounds so good🤤🤤
Yes. Long form. Like a co-driver in a rally car….calling out turns/chords.
This is the nicest sound i ever heard on a youtube short ❤️
I don’t play piano. And I haven’t learned to play Gospel music. What beauty, strength, and tenderness.
This is the kind of music that after listening to it for song long, finally pushed me to buy a digital piano and start learning on my own. I want to play stuff like this. 😍🥰

Right lol WE NEED IT
For sure! Does anyone know of an on-line course or tutorial in this style? Wish Peter would put something together like this. He's awesome.

These shorts are fire
I said it before, these harmonic ideas are great for any musician.
When gospel course Pete?
Any recommendations for Gospel records with playing like this? Would love to listen to more but I have a hard time knowing who to even look up 😂😭
Cory Henry is a wicked pianist that often plays gospel stuff
Donald Lawrence and Kirk Franklin
Look up James Cleveland's stuff
I'm guessing peter got some of this language from keith jarrett, even if it's not explicitly gospel. check out his version of god bless the child with his trio, also some of the american quartet stuff and some of his solo piano stuff. also check out nina simone.
They’re doing the Lord’s work!!
since you made more videos about gospel style, please make one about preaching chords, thanks
Very nice. 👍

Would love to see the transcription of this, loosely

Best piano I've ever heard, what is the brand and model?
I think it’s a 1994 Steinway Model B
I love that ❤

I swear to god y’all I just started watching this at 4:44 😂😂
Love how content and happy you are just playing a basic gospel progression, Video on Infant Eyes??
Someone teach me how to read the shorthand! Any YT channels you'd recommend?

Can the G9sus4 and Db9(#11) at the start be conceptualised as variation on a II and III? If so, I need some help figuring out the conceptual link 🙏
Both G9sus4 and Db9 serve in propelling the resolution into IV. Another way to think of it and play it would D-9 Db9 into C. ~> So, a chromatic II V into the IV. Among other things Peter’s playing up the value of tweaking chord quality. Even the I chord could be played as a dom7. Then you’ve more fully made this into a blues progression than something so centrally gospel.
How would one start to play like that, if they had a basic, self taught understanding of piano chords etc.
start from the basics, build from there... it's a long road but it's def worth it. But start from the bottom I would recommend. There's this amazing grace reharm (jazz duets) that represents the levels quite well.
Is that available in pdf?
Just needs the cigar in his mouth because Pianist looks identical to Anthony Mazzola of Holt's Cigar.
Where can we access the pdf and lesson for this?
Just one thing I don't get... you mean, there is a 4rth Major and Augmented? in you example Cmaj7 means 7th is augmented, and not in C7 more classic ?
❤❤
