In 2008 in Beijing she won the gold medal for her country on the balance beam. Today she looks back on that very special moment and relives it!

@@elliottkingdomhello I heard in 2014 they was a Facebook scam about This Gymnast Broke Her Gymnastics Leotard / Dress in Competition in France
I watched her video where she reacts with her husband on their own channel a few years ago - and there she said she literally did this routine from muscle memory. She didn't have a solid performance in the back gym, she kept falling and Chao made her do it over and over again because he wanted her to stop thinking, so when she got out there, she somehow did just that and did the whole thing off muscle memory, which is what Chao wanted.
Do you know if the video is still up on their channel? I've been looking for it, and I can't find it.

I was team Shawn for sure! I loved both her and Nastia but Shawn was my favorite of the two thats for sure! She had something so special in her gymnastics. I was so proud and happy for her that she finally got her gold!
I agree - Shawn is THE BEST!! Love Nastia because Shawn loves her so much.
Me too! I loved her power and energy. Nastia was more long lines and flow, not my style.

I absolutely loved them both, I wish Nastia's more artistic style had stuck around though. Now it seems like it's only power gymnasts who score.

@@lalareal180 Noooo, I've seen a lot of beam work over the years and I still really love this routine the most. I'm allowed to have a favorite of my choosing! (Karen? Why does favoring this routine make me a Karen? I don't think you know what a Karen is.)

Didn't know Lee coached her on beam, that's why there's a female voice cheering in the audience when she nailed the turn.
Each part of her routine is so hard, she made it like she's on the floor.
The fondness of her memories on her face is so sweet.
Her balance beam is so unique. Its very memorable to me. It's very much her style. I love her so much! ❤

I loved this video it was nice to hear from Shawn’s perspective. I watched that live and maybe 100x since and still love it. Shawn and Nastia are 2 very different gymnasts and I appreciate both Shawn’s power and Nastia’s elegance long lines.

I feel like its that minset we get sometimes where we're like "I'm gonna give 100% in practice" and then when you actually get onstage and it's your moment, you psych out the pressure and just hard focus, and you give 110% because now you're actually giving it your ALL

@@karyon1007 wow. :( so disconcerting that there was so much abuse in team USA gymnastics for so many years. Shawn and her coach chow are the perfect example and proof that it doesn’t have to be that way. I’m endlessly proud of all the athletes who have spoken up in recent years (& before). Bravo to them.

@@addie3147 Most the time it's not. There's so much external pressure even if they're being told they don't have to do it.
It is pitiful that humankind got this weak. For most of human history "children" went to war at a lower age than this. Here some late teen athletes had to deal with some pressure and got better physically and mentally because of it.

1:20 I feel like this actually is somewhat normal. For someone who went into music performance and played through so many percussion pieces, pieces become muscle memory for us. Although you want to be focused, it has never been uncommon for me to just kind of go into some kind of daze when performing. I think this just shows how crazy cool muscle memory is. Totally normal, Shawn!
