Most refrigerants are flammable to some extent. They had to incorporate more hydrocarbons in the mix to reduce toxicity and environmental reactions. As you pointed out, it is a very small quantity. Domestic propane has the advantage of having an aroma added, so a major leak may announce itself to your nose. It is also heavier than air, so unless there is an ignition source below the leak, it will be hard to get it into the right place at the right A/F ratio to ignite… Nice experiment!

That looks like the soleous air dehumidifier that was recalled. Same problem lost refrigerant charge and compressor would not kick off. Really badly done friction welds on these. They work ok on 134a after you solder over the welds. All of them...🤓

I think I have the same machine and same problem. Is it r22? Liquid propane? Vapor? how did you get the propane in? Propane from 20 lb grill tank? I love the idea and would do the same. Thanks!

As far as how I got the propane into the system, the video pretty well covers it-not much to add. When charging the system, the pressure in the tank must be greater that the system pressure, so it needs to go in the suction line and compressor running. I used vapor off the grill tank. I think modern grill tanks have a valve preventing liquid withdrawal. Its now been a couple years and the machine is still working. I tired injecting UV dye to find leak with no success. About once a season it needs a propane top up.

@@geezerguy47all you have to do it turn a tank upside down to get liquid.

No, I feed in vapor to the suction side. When I feel cool on the suction line I stop filling. I don't think you can get liquid out of modern tanks due to internal safety valve. It might feed in too much, too quickly anyway.
