It feels alot like medarot .also another game series that is still going sadly natsume has yet to localize one yet due to time constraints from there translation team . And though it's not mentioned this is actually the third or fourth game in a series of games called danball senki
Saaaame! XD I never heard of this game before, but it instantly reminded me of medabots, I actually instantly searched for any correlation between them. Damm been 7 years huh?... I just got my 3ds 2 months ago
Does anyone else think this looks like a more fleshed-out Custom Robo? I really liked the DS Custom Robo game, so I'll probably enjoy this as well. Too bad there's no online mode, though.
+SpotterX4 Custom Robo has way more strategy and if fast paced, so i'd never say fleshed out, it's more accurately described as watered down, but I think it's best to avoid just comparing it to Custom Robo. It's like a (up to) 4-player strategy fighter. This looks more like a fusion of Pokemon, Battle Network and Custom Robo.
We've been given Passwords to unlock special Parts and Weapons in the game! Blue Destroyer Z Set - ChaiN$aW Yellow Kunoichi Set - kuNaI807 HG Achilles Lance and Shield - H3eL8L0k HG Burn Knuckles - Fir3ClaW GameXplain Exclusive! HG Huntsman Rifle - PiNp0in7
When you beat the game you get a password that I suspect is random for your game which doesn't work on other games but its for some crap Princess or something.
vaporfarts Just looked it up and HOLY SHIT is it *Good*! I can see where Capcom got their Gundam Vs. idea from, and it even feels like Power Stone at some points.
When I was little, I would always go to GameStop and pick out games to buy solely on the cover art and pictures on the back of the box. Managed to find a lot of really now-underrated gems from doing that. But recently I'd find myself always looking up reviews to see if games were good and watch tons of gameplay videos and crap, but I was online looking at upcoming games coming out and saw this one and I had no idea about the cartoon, but I thought the cover looked cool and the screenshots they had made the game look pretty great and it just really reminded me of those old times I'd go to GS and pick out games. So I pre-ordered this one and now that this review says it's shaping up to be a really cool game, I'm so glad I did.
I feel like I have the most hype for this game. I just see people compare it to custom robo and I'm sitting here knowing every episode and most of the robots. 200 something episodes...
I think you'll find that the only thing it lacks because of that is the fact that you can't really compare your lbx to other peoples. The game is legitimately difficult sometimes. Sure you won't have much trouble for the most part, but there are enemies that will catch you off guard and will give you a serious challenge to an extent that other players wouldn't be able to do. They will still run into walls if you want them to, but they can make good predictions and moves, so don't think that they'll just hand you the win.
Thank you for bringing this game to our attention. I knew the series as Danball and I cosidered importing Danball Senki W for the PS Vita when I saw this was being localized just with a westernized name. I picked it up at launch and it has me hooked. I am a big fan of custom robots i.e. Gundam breaker and this is the closest thing we will ever get to a localized game of this type since custom robo. The Saturday morning cartoon feel and the kids never say die attitude (ala Ash from Pokémon) is quite endearing that brings me back to my own childhood and despite the ridiculousness of the situation in this world it is a fun as Hell game and surprisingly deep in customization. You not only customize armor and weapons but the central core of the robot itself. I'm looking forward to Level 5's next offering of Yokai Watch this November. Will you be providing coverage of that game as well? I do hope so. Great work!
Derrick, this was actually an incredible review, not that GX reviews are generally bad, but you really explained this game well and did it justice; which is what it needs with so many people just saying stuff like "It looks like Custom Robo without the Custom Robo name." or "So it's a Custom Robo clone?" and the game not really explaining itself well enough on a surface level to dispel those inaccurate comparisons. I think I heavily misjudged this game, I still think it looks like it controls awkwardly, but I think I understand what it is trying to be - a combination of mechanics and ideas from Pokemon and Mega Man Battle Network/Star Force mixed with some conceptual elements of Custom Robo, not that it is trying to be Custom Robo. Pokemon in that you have a party, your robots level up, and there is a rock, paper, scissors system in place of an absurd level of strategy without any kind of exploit. Battle Network in that there are better versions of each "part" just like you had 3 levels for most chips. As well as a rock, paper scissors mechanic, the overall art style, characters and storyline, and the core customization looks so similar to the navicust. And Custom Robo in the concept of tiny robots and switchable parts. These parts however just alter numerical stats for the overall robot like in an RPG, not each part having entirely different mechanics (with a few, usually illegal class, clones) with individual statistics separate from the other parts as in Custom Robo. This is what a review is supposed to do, explain the game and what makes it its own thing, while opening the minds of doubters and fence riders. I'm not sure i'll get the game anytime soon, but I'm a lot more open to giving it a shot knowing it actually has a lot more to it than all the coverage up until now has led on.
Certainly the Best Game of this issue Nintendo3DS, Amasing Story, Pretty Good Gameplay, and Excellent Triggers/Gearwork, the Battlegrounds Cube add a great life duration and a small tatics on this game, It deserve an animation series...Great Manga and great Game, I'm fond of this licence !
I haven't watched the review yet, but as a huge Level-5 fan, I really would love this game to be good. Everything I've seen about it seems awesome. It sounds a lot like Custom Robo. And I freaking loooove me some Custom Robo.
I don't know why but I've always had a thing for merchandise based anime. Yugioh, Digimon, Pokemon, Vanguard, Beyblade, etc.Not sure if this is the kind of game I would like but certainly one I'd consider. Good review as always
***** the anime on nick was good But they cut alot out because dub not good for kids like how i think its eps 5 in the sub verson where the mayor is going to get assassianted so its up to the kids and their little toys to beat up another toy with a sniper rilfe. Oh children show your all fun. The 2ed season is coming out soon as well.
zerokura I played Final Fantasy 7 as a kid when I was 7 years old, and saw Aerith's death by Sephiroth, I was fine with it, what's wrong with society nowadays thinking kids can't take death scenes or probably even read a whole bunch of text for storyline? And also, played Shining Force on the Genesis, and some RTS games on MS-DOS at that young an age, when I've only just started schooling. (And yes, I know both the Genesis and MS-DOS are at least ten years apart, but I had access to the Genesis a bit late.)
***** haha ya i been into the seris for a long time&rember seeing it in a game infromer with another psp game...that i dont rember. but watched all the seasons when was watching the english one i think. War was cool just short T-T. it could of done more with all the differnt nation.
While this game may not be the Custom Robo that we wish to have, it at least has that fresh take on that genre that doesn't make it a complete discount of it. I've watched the anime, and I was thoroughly impressed with what it did and how it was all executed. I for one will play this game with peaked interest and will enjoy what it does, regardless of how it may look or its overall play value.
Can't wait to pick this up tomorrow. Big fan of the series. If anyone gets interested in it, even a little, I recommend trying to watch the subbed Japanese episodes. Danball Senki, Danball Senki W, and Danball Senki Wars. First series was great, second was a bit better, third was...one of those military school academy things, but it wasn't too bad. Hope it all gets dubbed, even if I won't like the changes.
It reminds me of Biomotor Unitron x MegaMan Battle Network... That's a good thing. Thank you GameXplain for showing me some gameplay details. This game has like no advertisement outside the anime.
It's actually a psp game released in japan and was upgraded to 3ds essentially same combat skills and same everything you can actually check that out as well
I've enjoyed Gotcha Force for GameCube and Custom Robo Arena for the DS, and LBX seems like a worthy spiritual successor to those games, especially since there hasn't been neither have had a single sequel! Based on this review I think I'll enjoy it.
Thank you. Like most people I did write this off as another child's anime to market toys so I never bothered with it. To me it seemed like a down scaled Metabots(if anyone still remembers that anime). But I always did like custom robo and gotcha force games so this does look like I would enjoy this. I know nothing about this franchise an thanks to your review I'm already thinking up tons of custom builds for when I play it. Once again game explain gives me a reason to break into my savings lol you guys are the only game reviewers I trust because you feel and sound so genuine when you review and discuss games. And I'm really glad you discarded that the rating system. It felt so arbitrary
Nearly bought this, since it reminds me of Custom Robo. However, when you said it's local multiplayer only, that's a big no to buying for me. Looks great, but I'd want to play with people all over the world.
I realise i have an obsession with series about middle schoolers fighting with robots every few years 2001:HOLY FUCK METABOTS IS THE SHIIIIIIT 2003:HOLY FUCK GUNDAM IS THE SHIIIIIIT 2007:HOLY FUCK CUSTOM ROBO IS THE SHIIIIIT 2015:HOLY FUCK LBX IS THE SHIIIIIIT
Biggest fan of Custom Robo Arena and when I saw this during the nintendo direct I knew I had to get it. Only a few more hours till it comes out!!! HYPE!!!
Derrick this definitely one of your better reviews. This game was already on my radar, but after seeing your review this is pretty much a Day 1 purchase now. My fear was that it would be too kiddy for adult play. I see now that's not a problem. That customization engine is serious stuff! I also like the campy seriousness of the characters against such a ludicrous plot premise. Finally, a gundam style game for the West. And, yeah I loved Custom Robo.
I could see something special about this when they first announced it, and I'm glad it exactly as I expected. The lack of online functionality is a big bummer. I understand that in japan one is always just feet away from another 3DS user, but if they really wanted this to shine in any other market, it needs a similar guarantee for match-up. I doubt I'll find anyone else with this game without first creeping my way to the local park and making a fool of myself.
Honestly, wasn't very excited for this game at first but after playing this game at comic, I thought it would be a title i might pick up and Now I think this review just convince me to get this game, eventually.
It's a little disappointing how there isn't online multiplayer, but I guess we're just too spoiled and want every game to be online. Games like this can be fun to play in single player and just concentrate on it rather than rushing it just to play online after. This game will be good as a standalone single player game, and not as an online game. Local multiplayer sounds fun with friends, IF you have friends who all have this game!! For most people, local multiplayer is pretty much a dead non existing feature.
I really like this game. Yes it does bother me that there is no online play, but the fact that I can customize the frames, weapons, attack and defense stats, and the special attack routines it's hard for me to choose how I want it. I hope more people get this game where I live I really want to battle other people and exchange strategies.
I really think that game trailers and dev interviews would specifically say that for games like Pokemon and Super Smash, they are also have an entire different in-depth, competitive curve. How many of you guys even noticed what Natures were when you were playing the original Silver/Gold/Crystal version? What about their EV training? Not until we became over the age of 18 (I'm 22 now), did we start getting super into 'kids games' like Pokemon due to this whole kind of competitive scene. Anyway, if publishers and devs got more in to specifics as to whether or not their game could literally be rated for "everyone" not only would people find a whole bunch of games that they never would have guessed was so complex, but it would bring in companies so much more fans. I also think that having a more mature fanbase would create more sales because unlike a child fanbase, they'd only be telling their friends in elementary school during recess (In Canada, we have schools that are just grades 1-8, and then high school which is grades 9-12) whereas I tell my buddy that 5 hours away from me by train to help me breed some competitive Pokemon and if he has some breeding rejects.
+Jacob Dutkiewicz ha yeah thats true lol. i get what you are saying, plus it dosent really help that level 5 games graphics look a LOT like that show/more cartoony animes
LBX (Danball Senki) is the first anime that I ever watched, and it was damn good. When I heard it was being dubbed, I was incredibly happy, and then censorship came in and stopped all of the actually exciting parts of the anime. Hopefully this game doesn't ruin a great franchise.
super awesome evilness "Hopefully this game doesn't ruin a great franchise." Since the game actually came first, and has _just now_ been released in the west, I don't think you have to worry about that.
glad to hear a positive review! as soon as i saw the beginning of you livestream, i wanted to get it! I always tend to like mecha anime such as Eureka 7, Gundam, Code Geass, etc and i love the Monster Hunter series so this seems like itll be a nice mix
DisturbedKoala zoids.... not so much. you can't change limbs i compared it to MH since weapons change battle style and armor pieces change stats/skills side note: BLADE LIGER FTW
It looks really fun, Im not much of a fan of fighting games but I love customization and grinding, and the fact it seems to be like an anime where you control the fights is really interesting, I will be picking it up, its a shame that there seemed to be no marketing presence prior to release, I guess because its now a fairly old game
Been looking forward to this game basically since it was announced, so I actually preordered it for pickup on launch day. I know that can be a little reckless, but in this case, it really paid off (IMO). It has a lot of customization, I find the battles pretty intuitive, it has _a lot_ of customization, the soundtrack is fairly nice, it has *a lot* of customization, and the story so far seems somewhat cool (if sometimes predictable). Oh, and did I mention it has *_a lot_* of customization? If you were worried about the voice acting, I can try to alleviate your concerns: The voices can be turned down or off. (I'm assuming that they can still be heard in cutscenes, though.) Personally, I found the acting to be... Mediocre sometimes, but rarely dreadful. Few complaints though. For all the customization, I kinda wish the main character could be player-created, instead of being a pre-built protagonist. (The story works well with what they did, so I won't complain too much). A few more sorting options for sidequests would be nice (like difficulty and starting location), and speaking of which, maybe not so many quests that require you to use certain parts. (Guess it's to encourage experimentation, but it gets annoying.) LBX is nothing earth-shattering, but I think it's worth a try if you like meaty RPG's with a heavy amount of customization, and/or have enjoyed similar games like Custom Robo or Medabots. _P.S. I'm on Episode 5 right now, so no spoilers from that one onwards, please._
just looking at the menu it looks just like custom robo arena. that game was so heavily underrated. it only sucked when you forgot to save since there were literally zero checkpoints and dying put you to your last save.
This game is really making me miss Custom Robo games. I actually really liked the DS one, so I still kind of wish they'll make another one in the future.
1 Year later, I replayed it and found that despite enjoying the game, there were definately quirks in how the game plays that stopped me from absolutely LOVING the game. Hopefully the sequel game (Known in japan as Danball Senki W Super Custom) will get localized by 2017. it's all a matter of if Level 5 thinks it's worth it. I think it is, but I have some biases for this IP.
i think the lack of online might hurt its sales over here in terms of adult buyers. if we had gotten it back in 2012 it honestly might not have been the case. which sucks because if it doesn't sell that well here it might affect if we get the sequel if and when that's a thing.
The whole time during the review I kept thinking about how nearly identical this game seemed to Custom Robo.....oh Custom Robo...the game cube and ds games were so good...wish there were more made of them
its funny how massive LBX/danball senki is in japan, but yet, went so under the radar in america... i recommend watching the anime subbed, its actually a great series; surprisingly deep at times, too. it's one of my favorites - if you liked the cast in the dub, you'll love them in the sub. there's also the second season (w) as well as the third (wars). wars is the most serious of the 3, so if you're into more darker stuff, i'd recommend checking that one out.
I agree with this review its a game that shouldn't be over looked having beat the main story it was a good ride i still want to play it even after the main story for ppl who like collecting equipment in games would enjoy this just like me, and the lvl system was also a nice touch after waiting for 8 years for a new custom robo game LBX fills that void all to well and Earns its place among the greats. also SPEAR IS THE BEST WEAPON CLASS IN THE GAME!!!!!
Man even Custom Robo Arena had online multiplayer and that was 8 years ago. I've got a soft spot for that series, this seems similar in gameplay and tone so I might check it out on sale. Any other customized robot brawlers people recommend higher?
The lack of an online mode is unacceptable for a game like this. Custom Robo Arena was a near-launch DS game, and even it had decent online while it was active. What an odd oversight.
This is the kind of game I'd be dying to play if I was 8 years old again...
I'm 21.. and I'm dying to play this.
Reminds me of Medabots
It feels alot like medarot .also another game series that is still going sadly natsume has yet to localize one yet due to time constraints from there translation team . And though it's not mentioned this is actually the third or fourth game in a series of games called danball senki

I was thinking of the exact same thing.

im 30 and just bought a 3ds and playing this :)
Does anyone else think this looks like a more fleshed-out Custom Robo? I really liked the DS Custom Robo game, so I'll probably enjoy this as well. Too bad there's no online mode, though.
SpotterX4 same here,
SpotterX4 The gamecube version of custom robo remains one of my most played games to this day.
SpotterX4 Custom Robo was way faster that this game, i'm not really into it but i want to
SpotterX4 That's the reason why I'm getting it.
+SpotterX4 Custom Robo has way more strategy and if fast paced, so i'd never say fleshed out, it's more accurately described as watered down, but I think it's best to avoid just comparing it to Custom Robo. It's like a (up to) 4-player strategy fighter. This looks more like a fusion of Pokemon, Battle Network and Custom Robo.

how to generate the password?
When you beat the game you get a password that I suspect is random for your game which doesn't work on other games but its for some crap Princess or something.
no i already know, talk to robot where you save your game, there have an option to write the password, then you can buy it at game shop
this game looks like a combination of Medabots, Custom Robo, and Gundam
sounds pretty bitchin.
akirajotaro I thought it was a mix of Zoids and Gundam.
akirajotaro GOTCHA FORCE IS THE SUPERIOR ROBO FIGHTER.
vaporfarts Agreed
vaporfarts Just looked it up and HOLY SHIT is it *Good*! I can see where Capcom got their Gundam Vs. idea from, and it even feels like Power Stone at some points.

Such a good game, too bad no one seemed to care about it.
Still crying to this very day we won't get a siquel to the game
There's sequels, danball senki W and danball senki wars, but it's only in Japan
This actually looks really fun, shame about the lack of online multiplayer though...

Ifrit really can catch you off guard.
This game needs a switch port/remake/sequel with online battles
Imagine the competitive options
I remember this game as a kid it was such a fun game
I saw clips from the anime while I was in my early 20s. I was surprised that the fights were really well animated
I'll give it a shot. What made Custom Robo so appealing was the simplicity of its customization and how accessible its battles were.
Brings back memories… 🥹
The gameplay looks a lot like Gotcha Force on the GameCube.

Possibly the most underrated DS game ever

2015:HOLY FUCK LBX IS THE SHIIIIIIT
Never seen a series die so fast as much as this one
Dude there was only one game in the us but multiple in Japan
this reminds me a lot of custom robo and you know what I'm glad it does because I loved those games to death can't wait to pick this up next paycheck.
Bro memories kicked back in I wish I never broke my 3ds
Biggest fan of Custom Robo Arena and when I saw this during the nintendo direct I knew I had to get it. Only a few more hours till it comes out!!! HYPE!!!
WAIT
THIS IS A CUSTOM ROBO GAME IN DISGUISE
OHH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
Derrick this definitely one of your better reviews.
This game was already on my radar, but after seeing your review this is pretty much a Day 1 purchase now. My fear was that it would be too kiddy for adult play. I see now that's not a problem. That customization engine is serious stuff! I also like the campy seriousness of the characters against such a ludicrous plot premise. Finally, a gundam style game for the West. And, yeah I loved Custom Robo.
This sounds awesome! If only PW3 and MGS didn't come out back to back, I might've had the money for this at launch, will try it eventually :)
I guess it's nice that they released it outside of Japan, even though the game is apparently four years old...
Ugh! I can't wait to play!
It reminds me so much of Custom Robo!
But at the same time, it's something new.
This game was a banger
Almost 500K subscribers guys!! Are you going to do anything special to celebrate it?
Picked this up the other day, and I'm enjoying it quite a lot. I'm only about 5 or 6 hours in but it's a lot of fun. If a little monotonous at times.
Never heard about this game, will definitely check it out.
cant wait for Q A
Well, I just ordered this game. I'm sure there will be a new version on a modern Nintendo console some time, but this just looks too good to skip!
Ok this is actually getting me hype! I'm gonna have to pick this up!
I'm a simple man. I see robots, I press 'like'.
Are you still simple man who likes robots, or are you more into spying on girls nowdays? :P :D
Still watching the anime somehow. The game looks good, I'll give it a rent.
God, this is gonna be the next Bakugan, isn't it?... 0:11 Holy s**t, he threw it like a Bakugan!
thats actually not the robos, thats the protable arena that builds itself from that cube. the robos are action figure size
Zack Meyer I know that, but he still throws it like one,
+Jacob Dutkiewicz ha yeah thats true lol. i get what you are saying, plus it dosent really help that level 5 games graphics look a LOT like that show/more cartoony animes
Jacob Dutkiewicz I'd say it's more Custom Robo than Bakugan.
LBX (Danball Senki) is the first anime that I ever watched, and it was damn good. When I heard it was being dubbed, I was incredibly happy, and then censorship came in and stopped all of the actually exciting parts of the anime. Hopefully this game doesn't ruin a great franchise.
super awesome evilness Apparently the censorship in the game is minimal.
super awesome evilness "Hopefully this game doesn't ruin a great franchise."
Since the game actually came first, and has _just now_ been released in the west, I don't think you have to worry about that.
glad to hear a positive review! as soon as i saw the beginning of you livestream, i wanted to get it! I always tend to like mecha anime such as Eureka 7, Gundam, Code Geass, etc and i love the Monster Hunter series so this seems like itll be a nice mix
is this game like monster hunter? of it is I'd get it
Orion Pax customization wise
***** Rather than Monster Hunter to describe customization, I'd go with the anime show of Zoids.
DisturbedKoala zoids.... not so much. you can't change limbs
i compared it to MH since weapons change battle style
and armor pieces change stats/skills
side note: BLADE LIGER FTW
+DisturbedKoala Dude...I have literally seen you everywhere on RUclips. I've seen you in videos not even videogame related...this must be a sign.
(Guess it's to encourage experimentation, but it gets annoying.)
LBX is nothing earth-shattering, but I think it's worth a try if you like meaty RPG's with a heavy amount of customization, and/or have enjoyed similar games like Custom Robo or Medabots.
_P.S. I'm on Episode 5 right now, so no spoilers from that one onwards, please._
Smaller medabots! Fine by me, I adored the medabots games on gbc (as a kid). Might give this a try.
just looking at the menu it looks just like custom robo arena. that game was so heavily underrated. it only sucked when you forgot to save since there were literally zero checkpoints and dying put you to your last save.
I'd playing the hell out of this. Its probably the closest I'd get to playing a translated Gundam Breaker.
This game is really making me miss Custom Robo games. I actually really liked the DS one, so I still kind of wish they'll make another one in the future.
LEVEL 5 is my most favorite developer company of all time
1 Year later, I replayed it and found that despite enjoying the game, there were definately quirks in how the game plays that stopped me from absolutely LOVING the game.
TeamMagmaGrunt There already is a sequel. Two in fact.
The anime is really good =)
It id
Guys, if you want this game, get it now. It's only a matter of time until it becomes another cult classic that costs way more than it should online.
The whole time during the review I kept thinking about how nearly identical this game seemed to Custom Robo.....oh Custom Robo...the game cube and ds games were so good...wish there were more made of them
Closest thing we will ever get to Gotcha Force 2
Am I the only one getting extreme flashbacks of Medabots all throughout this review?...
its funny how massive LBX/danball senki is in japan, but yet, went so under the radar in america...
i recommend watching the anime subbed, its actually a great series; surprisingly deep at times, too. it's one of my favorites - if you liked the cast in the dub, you'll love them in the sub. there's also the second season (w) as well as the third (wars). wars is the most serious of the 3, so if you're into more darker stuff, i'd recommend checking that one out.
+Dawnman DX Duel-wielding guns for the win.
I love this game
Man even Custom Robo Arena had online multiplayer and that was 8 years ago.
I've got a soft spot for that series, this seems similar in gameplay and tone so I might check it out on sale.
Any other customized robot brawlers people recommend higher?
everyone is saying that this reminds them of custom robo and I'm here thinking 'hey this is like poer battlers'
The lack of an online mode is unacceptable for a game like this. Custom Robo Arena was a near-launch DS game, and even it had decent online while it was active. What an odd oversight.
I have been looking to have my Custom Robo itch scratched. I'll have to look in to this.
Its not that I dont like this because it looks like a kids game. I just dont care because it doesn't look fun...
How does this game compare to say...Custom Robo?
i LOVE IT, reminds me of medabots AND custom robot
Now if they only made a sequel to Gotcha Force with some of these features added, that would be awesome!
So custom robo minus the death alien who just really like kids toy
