Congratulations to your brother for his weight loss & to you for suggesting he follow a healthy whole food plant based diet. I became a vegetarian over 50 years ago & a vegan about 25 years ago. Even though I was a vegan, I was overweight. On March 1st, 2020, I started a whole food plant based diet. No oils, no vegan margarine, no nuts. I think this is the healthiest way that I can eat. I don't cheat. By March 1st, 2021, I have lost 17 pounds. That's about 1.5 pounds a month. Not the rapid weight loss that I see other people (like your brother) have. I walk every day & live an active lifestyle at age 78. I will continue eating this way for the rest of my life because I believe it is the healthiest way to eat. I still need to lose 20 pounds so maybe it will take me another year but I am getting there.
I love Dr Lim's presentations. He's so clear and to the point. Brilliant. I've been a vegetarian all my life but only when I switched to a WFPB diet could I achieve a healthier weight, like Dr Lim's brother.
I was able to get my husband's A1c from 11.5 down to 7.5 on this type of diet and we aren't done yet...I now know that we will be able to reverse his diabetes and lower his medications or completely eliminate them.
Thanks. I went WFPB 8 years ago. after CVD diagnosis. Metrics improved dramatically within weeks. I've also learned that triglycerides is an excellent marker but fluctuates a bit and has to be measure after about 12 hours of fasting. TG to HDL ratio below 2 has been associated with much reduced calcification vs higher ratios.
Thanks for the vid Dr. Lim. Friendly suggestion for future vids: please let the other person have a few comments. It seems like he is bursting to talk. Great information and very inspiring. All the best to you and your brother.
Your brothers transformation says it all! The proof is in the photos. My new aphorism is that you will never convince me that bacon cheese and eggs are healthier than oranges, bananas and apples.
That is right, all the "Fat is OK" and folks saying they are fat shamed, all it takes is a presentation and people beg for a way to get rid of fat and have a chance at feeling better
Thank you Dr. Lim!! Even if not eating a perfect 💯 WFPB diet and some processed vegan options this is the way to live!! My total cholesterol was climbing to 200 now just 160 along with other markers back to normal! No lower back pain, abundant energy and stamina for a 49 year old!!👈🌱💚😎✌️
Right there with you...I'm 63 went 100% to plant based in 2010....both my dad and brother died from colon cancer and I researched it and it is one of the more PREVENTABLE cancers....I feel like I'm 33 not 63.....and I donate blood pretty much every 65 days....have NEVER been turned away due to high blood pressure nor low iron (which they measure BEFORE you donate) For ME, this is a great way to live and THRIVE!
@@valerietomsic8454 you donate blood 6 times a year and you've never been anemic? I've done it 10 times in the last 6 years and also have never been anemic, but you must have done it over 30 times in the last 6 years. That only proves that you don't need heme iron.
@@dj-fe4ck right! I think I was BORN to donate blood....the techs LOVE my veins.....when I was in the hospital having my first son way back in 1979, the nurse said to the other nurse: "oh....you HAVE to come see her veins!" She was so happy that I was "easy in" and "easy out." AND I feel WELL after donating....doesn't mess up my exercise every day or anything....glad to help try to save another person's life too!
I am 67. I ate a lot of processed food over the past three years. I found that I started to feel like I was 90 years old with aches and pains. It took me a lot of effort just to stand up. I was shocked. I switched to juicing. All the aches went away and I was able to stand up from the table easily and could walk 15 kilometres a day. For several reasons (excuses), I slipped back to unhealthy eating and all the joint stiffness returned. What an eye-opener. In three days, I am going back to juicing and will possibly alternate with Dr. McDougall's Maxium Weight Loss recipes. When I go to old age homes or see people in their 60's with walking sticks or canes, I feel like tapping them on the shoulder and telling them to change their diet!
Fruits have natural sugars, but juices can have high sugar, in them... you can squeeze you're own fresh juices like orange or grapefruit, but, if you're taking and meds, do not drink grapefruit juice that could interact with you're medication...
these types of diets starve your microbiome and you end up with a host of other problems seeing as your gut is responsible for 70% of your immune system..Your gut needs/wants fiber to thrive
Resistant starches are good. If you eliminate fats totally you are going to look too thin. Find what works for you but don't ever centre the diet around protein or fat. Center it around complex carbs then add fat / protein as required.
Wondering about his triglycerides. Mine went high on starch based- I have to leave off grains and potatoes for the time being. Eating a lot of beans and green vegetables. Grains make my sugar spike.Wish you guys would address this.
I have been WFPB for about 4 months with very little cheating. I've been insulin dependent for about 20 years and I'm 68 years old. My blood sugar numbers are far worse when I eat bread of potatoes and improve when I eat only green vegetables. What am I doing wrong? I've lost about 30 lbs so far which is encouraging, but the blood sugar levels are scaring me. My AC1 is over 9. I'm considering fasting, but my doctor thinks that's crazy. Any suggestions?
Little cheats do add up. Only three things to consistently remember for every single meal and snack: 1) no animal meats; 2) no dairy (an animal by-product); and 3) no added oils (no seeds, nuts, avocado, not even coconut or coconut oil). It makes a huge difference cutting out anything that contains fat or animal. Try it that way for the next four months and see the difference.
Your brother ate twizzlers(and other junks?) at night while doing keto and you blamed it on the keto diet? There are important metrics other than LDL. Why not measuring HDL, triglycerides, fasting insulin or C-peptide?
I need help in dispelling the theory that it was Meat Eating that gave early humans the abilty to grow larger brains and develop advanced communication skills. Can anyone point to contrary data? Source is: the Expensive Tissue Hypothesis (ETH) in Aiello’s co-authored 1992 paper. Also see theories on Meat and Nicotinamide.
No mate. Humans and our predecessors changed over to animal sourced food about 4 million years ago. Homo sapiens emerged around at least 350,000 years ago and were already cooking and eating meat. Some, but very little, plant food was consumed until around 10-20,000 years ago when we already had the brains of today, so you are out of luck I’m afraid. Indeed, all the hominid species that didn’t transition to meat are either extinct or being kept alive by human efforts today. Monkeys number several million, but humans are several billion (7+). Whether meat was the reason for our brain development or it was just an evolutionary thing, I don’t know, but it sure wasn’t plants that did it.
@@jr.6199 But I do know. It’s common knowledge as well as being completely obvious. The evidence is all around us. If you need scientific reports, then check out N14/N15 isotope analysis of humanoid remains. That shows incontrovertible proof that meat has been the main source of nutrition for Homo sapiens and our predecessors for around 4 million years.
Couldn't find isotopes, proves that meat diets developed larger brains. But we do have plenty of evidence that meat in the daily diet is not sustainable and destroying our ecosystems.
@@jr.6199 I didn’t claim that meat made our brains bigger is you read my original response, just that plants certainly did not as they weren’t consumed much until comparatively recently. The isotope stuff is interesting no? Meat is absolutely sustainable, it’s just that all the research is funded by Big Ag and Big Pharma who want us to eat plants only and get sick on an even greater scale than we have been doing since we adopted a 70% plant based diet from the middle to late last century. The only animal product to increase in the diet is chicken (fed GMO crops).
It may take some weeks/months to get rid of diabetes, you need to lose weight asap and exercise every day, the more variety of exercise the better. It's also a good idea to eat a large breakfast and to do 3 meals a day so that the caloric intake is spread out over the day.
It's also a good idea to not focus too much on blood glucose control, A1c at 6% vs 5% doesn't make much difference in health outcomes. Sell your blood glucose meter to someone else and buy a pair of dumbells and a bar to do pull ups and use these hard after your meals.

it's not about getting rid of fat entirely its more reducing it. And remember as Pritikin said, refined sugar partially becomes fat (fructose)..
So well done. Thank you.

If I was you I would cut out bread and potatoes. You could replace those with lentils and beans.
Try ray peat approach
Check out Mastering diabetes website. Might help to do wfpb right.
there r some people that are vegan keto. It is interesting. I love my plant based lifestyle
Also, why do I crave for FAT and Sugar every morning?
Becayee our cells run on sugar !!! Eat all ur fruit in the morning and at evening all ur carbs !!!! We also need fat!!!! 20-30g per day !

Yes we do. Actually a struct low fat starch based diet won't help your health. We do need some fat.
