This one was one of my favourites. We called it "the food game" in the levels you fight in this order: 1_ Hamburguers 2_ Sandwitches 3_ Hot Dogs 4_ Double Stick ice creams 5_ Grapes 6_ Cooking Planches 7_ soup noodles 8_ Meat Balls!
My mother could defeat anyone at this game. I still have a working cartridge and 2600, as well. I was eventually able to get good enough to beat her at Sea Quest though. My first gaming nemesis defeated!
For the longest time, I thought he was fucking around, calling the enemies hamburgers, radial tires, steam irons, and space dice (spaced ice). That is until I got ahold of an actual copy of the instruction manual and found out that is what they really are.
Was one of my favorite games growing up! Thanks for giving it a good review. I can get to the through the 5th wave of this game! Haha, funny that you mentioned the Mega Man thing, I remember trying to trick a friend into thinking the cart was mega man by covering the ia with my thumb :-P
I always thought the dice at the end were popcorn. lol Anyway great game and I got to play it when it was new. My cousins had it and many other greats.
Wow, that looks amazing, it looks a lot more fast-paced and exciting than I'd normally expect from an Atari 2600. That said, I've not played much on the console. Loving the variation!
We're NOT talking about how good the graphics are. We're talking about how good the GAMEPLAY is. Something this generation cannot see beyond Call of Duty.
Someone posted a Jefferson Airplane album with flying toasters, like the old screensaver, and I thought, "What was that Atari game...?" Thank goodness this was here, otherwise I might've been up all night... Cheers!
OMG! I totally forgot about this game!!! This game was awesome!!!! I played this game all the time, along with Pac-Man (all i had), Space invaders, and Combat. Dude, thanks for bringing this memory back to me! I'm going to eBay and buying an Atari as well as a copy of this game! Among the best $2.00 anyone can spend indeed, especially if it came with another game! I think the "space dice" look like those yellow things you used to put vinyl records on the record player (??)
One of my favs i picked up from Goodwill about 28 years ago. Didn't have the instructions, so i made up my own names for enemies...like Cheerios and Turds. The ship reminds me more of a Klingon Battle Cruiser or Romulan D7 than the Enterprise. Interesting note, your laser fire has the exact same sound effect as your helicopter in Chopper Command(also by Activision) when playing that game with slow fire difficulty on.
My brother and I got an Atari for Christmas in 1982. He got this game and I got Atari Pac-Man. I remember the first time we made it to those space dice and how that was the first time we got there. It was kind of cool that the colors would change in the various waves. I think the second time through the space dice are blue.
I had the version that came with a plain cartridge that had a white label and some black writing. Only had the description on the box to go by. Glad I took the gamble because it was great fun and way more exciting than Space Invaders. Planet Patrol was also a pretty awesome Atari shooter that came in a pretty cool silver foil box.
I believe the white label Activision games came out later in the lifecycle of the Atari, along with blue label variations, and are slightly more rare than the colorful picture label versions. I personally prefer the color labels myself. They look awesome displayed on a shelf.
The tv commerical for this Atari game back in 1982-'83 had a known rock band(I think it was "Journey" or "Van Helen")sang the song for this game.It goes simply like...."Mega-Megamaniaaaa"...(a guy with guitar gets vaporized)
@theAVlady I dunno,In1984 there was a local games shop (BeejayDeejay, Viewforth, Edinburgh) that had two Atari 2600's & an offer of 20 pence a game or 50 pence for an "all day ticket" which we obviously had to buy every day for the whole summer break being 12yo game addicts'n all & Megamania was always my favourite (Moon Cresta was my arcade fav tho) & one day i got the 999999 score and the screen froze & it really bugged me cos i was really getting into my stride but hey ho dems the breaks
Megamania was a staple of my childhood. Me, my parents, and many other family members were obsessed with it. Whats funny is that I got it as a Christmas present one year on accident. My grandmother had ordered E.T. and this game showed up instead. Nice order fail there.
@ theAvlady Yes! That's right, I remember now, like ms.pacman, I had figured out the pattern...my god, I don't remember what it was...but yes, same thing, I played it until I got bored...my fav. Game of all time..Haha
the sounds are pretty great for the atari. But where are the explosions? Oh well. Pretty cool. And its kinda funny, but useful that the lazer moves when you move.
Activision were so awesome around 1980. Pitfall, River Raid, Robot Tank, Enduro, Barnstorming, Space Shuttle, Megamania...I think I put more time into those games than I did the other 90+ games I had combined.
man this was my go to for a bit ..always STUPIDLY hard !! the damn boulders falling were ....fun. makes ya wanna throw a metal chair in the ring and ruin some guy's title shot by clocking a ref from behind and then clocking him, followed by standing outside the ring while you HEEL meter goes up with the crowd !!! feels good!
HAHA loved the ending, happened to me so many times, you think it would just give you a gimme life because you were so close and you tried so hard. But sadly electronics are soulless monsters!
The enemies were “interesting” for a reason. Megamania was a comical twist on the descending space shooter theme. At least, that is how I always interpreted it. Megamania is actually inspired by the arcade game Astroblaster. On a side note, I will always give credit to Megamania, Pitfall and River Raid for injecting fire back into the VCS(2600) after the utter disappointment of Pac-Man.
I prefer Activisions Demon Attack over this game. I also loved the flashy gold cart's that Demon Attack and Atlantis had and the different cart design. They were always easy to find in my large box of 2600 cart's.
This one was one of my favourites. We called it "the food game" in the levels you fight in this order:
1_ Hamburguers
2_ Sandwitches
3_ Hot Dogs
4_ Double Stick ice creams
5_ Grapes

I remember seeing the commercial a while ago. Even the commercial didn't know what the game looked like.
I received this as a Christmas present from my mom in 1982
I played this for years when I was a kid. YEARS!
Beaten-up, but still-working cartridge... The best kind.
Great memories of December '82 and January '83--playing this game & listening to Maneater by Hall & Oates.
Such a good times bro
Activision scored with this game.
Dangerously addictive!
My mother could defeat anyone at this game. I still have a working cartridge and 2600, as well.
I was eventually able to get good enough to beat her at Sea Quest though. My first gaming nemesis defeated!
I had Mega Mania. It's still one of my favorites. At later levels the Space Ice comes down diagonal.
Thanks this was one of the handful of 2600 games I had as a kid and played it for hours, but forgot the name until I saw this video!
This looks a lot like Astro Blaster (1981 by Sega).
The commercial (and song) were awesome. Pure MTV glory.
For the longest time, I thought he was fucking around, calling the enemies hamburgers, radial tires, steam irons, and space dice (spaced ice). That is until I got ahold of an actual copy of the instruction manual and found out that is what they really are.
Was one of my favorite games growing up!

I can get to the through the 5th wave of this game!
Haha, funny that you mentioned the Mega Man thing, I remember trying to trick a friend into thinking the cart was mega man by covering the ia with my thumb :-P
Dude you are now my new best friend! Its a pity no one plays decent games these days.
Only 50 points away from another life!
Tough break.
Great Review, Keep them coming!
this was a fun game, damn i wish i still had it.
My mom loved this game too.
I"ll admit -- I was expecting a full-on F7U12 at the end there.
its worth mentioning youtube compresses the quality to be lower and HD is just closer to the original video quality
We're NOT talking about how good the graphics are. We're talking about how good the GAMEPLAY is. Something this generation cannot see beyond Call of Duty.
I had this as a kid. Aahh memories!!!
Wow, the last time I played this was in 1986. Many hours spent in enjoyment. Good times.
Someone posted a Jefferson Airplane album with flying toasters, like the old screensaver, and I thought, "What was that Atari game...?" Thank goodness this was here, otherwise I might've been up all night... Cheers!
one of my faves! reminds me a lot of sneakers for the apple ][e. Was that Broderbund I tihnk ? Both great and very similar
Good review. This game goes on the list of Atari games to pick up.
just as always, great review

Somebody made a pretty good DOS PC knock-off of this game called "Round 42"

This seems like the perfect game for the paddle controller
You should check out the 5200 version. The controls work and the graphics represents the insane attacking items far better
Great review again.
Great game! Wow what a blast from the past!
there was a setting where you hold the trigger where your contunueing fireing
My brother and I got an Atari for Christmas in 1982. He got this game and I got Atari Pac-Man. I remember the first time we made it to those space dice and how that was the first time we got there. It was kind of cool that the colors would change in the various waves. I think the second time through the space dice are blue.
This awswers that big question which is better The starship Enterprise or the Moon Patrol Buggy.
Reminds me of the Astroblaster arcade game from 1980-81. Great classic game!

Demon Attack and Atlantis are actually by imagic, which is why they had their own unique cartridge design.
This is one "space nightmare" I definitely enjoy. Great game!
LOL Dragster dragged the whole deal down. Nice touch on the ending, oh so close.
One must beg the question, can the space dice set enemies on fire, and cut them in half?
Lol I played this when I was a kid and this hooked me to computer games forever lol
and is space dice from some movie or game or did he make it up?
this and yars revenge were my favorite game
i could play for days on a single life
99,950 on this
99,999 on yars revenge
The tv commerical for this Atari game back in 1982-'83 had a known rock band(I think it was "Journey" or "Van Helen")sang the song for this game.It goes simply like...."Mega-Megamaniaaaa"...(a guy with guitar gets vaporized)

i like old games... some of my favorite games are from the... i dont know what to call it i call it with 2d graphics but a 3d type perspective...
the commercial for this game was a pure acid-trip ^^
This does look cool. I have to try and get this.
Are you controlling the bullets there?
Simply one of the best!
WHEN WILL I LOOK UNDER SUBSCRIPTIONS AND SEE Classic Game Room HD - STARMASTER!!!
Please let's all do a minute of silence for that little bit of Mark that died for having missed that 50 points...
i had this game, i want to play it again
the sounds are pretty great for the atari. But where are the explosions? Oh well. Pretty cool. And its kinda funny, but useful that the lazer moves when you move.
It looks so cool!
i dont think in galaga had descending enemies exept for when they were attacking
Activision were so awesome around 1980. Pitfall, River Raid, Robot Tank, Enduro, Barnstorming, Space Shuttle, Megamania...I think I put more time into those games than I did the other 90+ games I had combined.
That does look really fun and challenging.
You got it for 50 cents in 1984 because that period was during the Video Game Crash when everybody was unloading their inventory.
happy bday!
45s... made the small spindle fit a 45 record. A 45 player had a big spindle so the clip in thing wasn't needed.
The ship looks more like a Klingon vessel, as opposed to a "Star ship Enterprise" thingy. ;)
Mega!
Me-ga-ma-nia
Megamania!
It's gonna drive you insane!
man this was my go to for a bit ..always STUPIDLY hard !! the damn boulders falling were ....fun. makes ya wanna throw a metal chair in the ring and ruin some guy's title shot by clocking a ref from behind and then clocking him, followed by standing outside the ring while you HEEL meter goes up with the crowd !!! feels good!

Is this Paddle Compadible?
I miss this game

sounds like a great title for a fighting game
I love my number 1 Favorite Activision and also Atari 2600 Game of All-Time Megamania is a Astro Blaster Version
im gonna try to pick this up :)
I smell awesome mega power in this game!
wow this game looks really good
im sure he will update the vid later
haha at the end i can really feel your anger...
This, HERO, Pitfall and Defender were my favorite Atari games. Activision was the best back then, IMO.
That was one of the Atari games I liked.(in sort a very simplistic mind numbing kind of way) Dragster looked half interesting also.
My favorite
Atari game
Looks nice
muito emtereçanteeeee!!!!!!!
Damn Moon Patrol buggies!
Omg! I was a Gawd at this game, no one could even come.close...I.played this game.for.hours and hours...Haha, its so cool to see it again...wow...
I prefer Activisions Demon Attack over this game. I also loved the flashy gold cart's that Demon Attack and Atlantis had and the different cart design. They were always easy to find in my large box of 2600 cart's.
i checked atariage and it is one of the more rare activision games. :(
they should have made more of the game!
I decided to try it on the Stella emulator. This game is more difficult than it looks.
They outta use those in nuke testing at ground zero. ;)
I like it how his character dies at the end of his videos.
Back in the days, when activision was not that multitrillion dollar company, they really made cool and creative games. Time changes everything.
Dang, 50pts..
Awesome game.
the best game of this genre
i love this game
