Regarding the Supermutant behemoths in the low-level-areas at 4:00 ~ish: My impression was that because of the Behemoths there where no other higher lvl enemies. @@Paag603 yeah. That would be quite awesome. Unfortunately I don't know much about creating maps and only a little bit about coding. But it would be a cool project though.
I've recently become a bit curious about Natick Bank's importance to the supermutants and deathclaws alike. I recently visited there and counted no fewer than 7 deathclaws in the area surrounding the town. directly east of there, right on the border of the map, there is a behemoth that spawns at a electrical transformer station that will start duking it out with nearby deathclaws. I've never found a deathclaw nest in the area to suggest it's a nesting ground like the Lynn Woods area, but despite it's low mutey population, the nearby behemoth might suggest that taking this area is a higher priority, than we might initially assume.
I agree with all but the last statement. The behemoth wouldnt indicate that the muteys sent it to take the area. Behemoths are essentially animals that answer to no one and only tolerate the company of other mutants. Atleast from what I've seen and heard.
Is naticks bank the one place where it’s a walled off squared with like a church, and inside there’s always a death claw and mutants or am I thinking of the wrong place?
@@Theegreygaming I just passed the spot in my new playthrough and was wondering the same thing, it’s close to a small raider camp at a motel type of area with a pool, I just figured the super mutants had attacked that spot, and the surviving raiders fled to that motel, and while the mutants were trying to set up camp the death claw heard the commotion of the fight and attacked
As far as the fate of the Commonwealth mutants. I think that as time goes on and their numbers dwindle I can see two things possibly happening. 1: The mutants consolidate their power and instead of many warlords and raiding parties they instead fall under one banner. They would likely hold up in a secure location. Which I think the Glowing Sea would be the perfect location. Yes it's FAR away from their normal raiding paths, but the natural protection that the highly irradiated and dangerous area means that any human faction looking to wipe them out will have a tough time doing so. 2: With their numbers dwindling the mutants could simply migrate to a new area, either in search of more mutant groups to join or find a way to make more mutants themselves. Or to simply find a easier target to raid. We already see this happening with the Far Harbor mutants who migrated there from Boston.
I think it's likely they would retreat close to the Glowing Sea, but not right into it (Due to problems with sourcing food, water, scrap, guns, armor, and ammunition), places like Natick, the Coast Guard Pier (longer shot, but it's close enough), or Somerville Place). Personally, I'd like to think they built a bunch of wood and scrap boats, similar to the ones used by the Orks in Lord of the Rings (Return of The King or The Two Towers, cant remember which), and then sailed to Spectacle Island to setup shop.
Not sure if it’s cannon if that blind super mutant gets killed by us or not (can’t remember his name but he’s at the outpost) he speaks pretty clearly and seems pretty advanced for a super mutant, assuming that over time they can adapt to speak more fluent and understand more they could end up like strong or faux maybe even like that one talking mutant from Vegas can’t remember his name but he spoke very well and was friendly with some other mutants and nightkin
I'm happy to see this series continue! I love deep dive world building. On the internal politics of commonwealth super mutants, Strong says something to the effect of "Brothers share everything," so I always took that to mean that infighting is rare and that they're wholly focused on the common good of the collective.
About the loyalty to their leader and how you only have to kill the boss to destroy the group, I think that most mutants are just not smart enough to think for themselves so much, so those who are smarter rise to power and without them the other mutants literally wouldn’t know what to do
Just to advise, on Survival mode, if you trigger the encounter between Diamond City Security and the Super Mutants at mid-level, the Super Mutants overpower Diamond City Security. I've witnessed it several times, once on at level 25, there was a legendary Super Mutant variant that decimated Diamond City Security. When that happens they effectively held the encampment and skirmished with Diamond City Security Guards everytime one did it's rounds. It certainly made Diamond City an interesting place to visit!

Really hope you're doing either gunners or triggermen in the next one, great concept for a series BTW! You kinda got me into Fallout 4 again. Also, it makes sense that Super mutants would have other goals than the ones in FO3 since they don't actually have acces to the FEV. They don't really strike me as raiders necessarily, more like Barbarians or Vikings, they care alot about strength, they look down on humans and want to kill and bask in the gore and violence, they have suicidebombers, they don't care about dying, that's the reason they don't stay in the glowing sea, they want to be close to people they can kill and don't care about the risks. Lastly i just wanna pitch an idea for a future fallout game, i would love it some day if we got a semi-intelligent behemoth boss of supermutants that has this giant throne and a couple of pet deathclaws, as well as cages of baby deathclaws, i think it could be a promising concept.
Your description of that potential behemoth boss reminds me of Throg from warhammer fantasy. An extremely large and powerful monster made more dangerous by having genuine intelligence.
I have a theory about suiciders; I think it might be a form of ultimate punishment for say cowardice, stealing from the boss, or some other form of offense. Just a theory of mine because it makes so little sense to just throw away a mutant unless you had a good reason.
I've logged a lot of time in fallout 4, and I learned early on that ALL of the settlement quests just require that you kill the leader. No matter what group, raider, mutant, or ghoul.
When talking about instances of Behemoths working with regular mutants you said that the only one was in Far Harbor, but then spoke of Fort Strong without mentioning the Behemoth that seemed to be sort of leading the mutants there
There is a single super mutant suicider that has a little living space inside of a train car on the train tracks just south of gunner plaza. His bed is made from rope and the frame of a old car and he has a little teddy bear on the bed, it’s kinda cute
Awesome video as always!! Also the library does kinda of a have a mission, daisy at good neighbor asks you to clear the place to return the overdue books. i can't wait for the gunners and far harbor and Nuka world!
Hammer and Fist… Hammerfist! Those are some very interesting observations. And it makes a lot of sense, given the general situation, origin and background. I think Long Wharfs odd gun-placements was an idea to tie in with that cut-content of the Vault under the sea. Nothing else makes sense to me.
in the super mutant map, i cant tell but i think you might've missed the scripted behemoth right next to the recon bunker with the Paladin, love the video as always! praise be to atoms holy glory!
That's kind of obviously what's happening. The institute is kidnapping people and turning them into super mutants, they're not going to waste potential test subjects just because they plan on replacing that person with a Synth.
That’s what I’ve thought for awhile. That at least for the last few decades since the creation of the first Gen3, the people abducted to be replaced have been turned into Super Mutants and released. At least until Virgil destroyed the FEV lab. Before then, about 50-60 years ago, I know that the Institute was trying to use FEV for the “perfect machines/synths” project so they discarded the rejects from that. But my theory is that after the creation of the Gen3 Synth the FEV abductions continued partially to deal with the replacement captives, but partially to keep the Commonwealth weak and divided.
I know you didn't take individual Super Mutant encounters into consideration. But there is a bizarre encounter I found with a lone suicider. The mutant erected a small camp/dwelling within a train car just south of Gunner Plaza following the tracks just before hitting the boundary to the map. It's an unmarked location. After you mentioned the loyalty and fanaticism of suicide mutants, it made me think of how bizarre and out of character this lone suicider, being this far south, was acting.
So I didn't bring this up the first time I watched the video because I thought it might be a tad pedantic, but if you do not bring the cure to Virgil in time, he devolves and starts acting much like a super mutant does, and tries to attack you. Would be interesting if there had been something there, maybe he says something specific that can be analyzed, or maybe there is a terminal entry after he turns, etc. anyways, great video! I love this series so far. Can't wait for the gunners, I really think there was a missed opportunity to make that a faction you can side with.

The cut content for sailor hat wearing mutants would have been fun to find in game. As it would imply that the Mutants are taking up seat fairing, maybe even fishing, and would have been good foreshadowing for those Super Mutants we’d later meet in Far Harbor.
With CIT being the main point of insertion for operatives, it's possible that the Institute has chosen Boston as their designated place to discard super mutants instead of Cambridge. This would at least keep the Charles River between them, all with little extra energy used on teleportation. This could also help explain why super mutants are far more concentrated in Boston than Cambridge, where they technically originate.
31:00 Yes the only time we see supermutant be willing to kill one of their own is with Strong. If not for the fact that he claims they are going to execute him it would seems that the supermutants have a taboo against killing their own kind.
Amazing series. The first time I've seen someone do a deep dive on both the mechanics of the level design and the lore of the series. Keep up the great work!
About the mutants in the Vim! Pop factory: the terminal entries in the factory seem to suggest that Grun, the behemoth, led the group because of his strength. He was apparently losing cognitive abilities, becoming more and more aggressive and less and less intelligent as he grew in size and strength. This is consistent with what we know about behemoths. Super mutants who live long enough don't die from old age. They just keep growing bigger and dumber, seemingly infinitely or until they can no longer find enough food to support their massive bodies. If you look at a behemoth up close, you can see that it is deformed, seemingly by its muscle mass growing too fast for the bone structure to keep up. That seems like another likely cause of death for behemoths who don't get killed by an army of heavily armed assailants. I don't know if there is any certain information telling if _all_ super mutants are potential behemoths, or if only some of them will grow to that extreme.
Malden's an interesting location. Super Mutants control the hospital, and raiders hold the metro, but are under attack by synths. Nearby, there's Vault 75, where the Gunners hold the Vault as a base, and nearby is a horde of Ghouls. I'd say in terms of fighting, Malden could very well be the biggest hotzone for gunfights, after downtown Boston.
Super mutant groups being concentrated around CIT hoping to scoop up any new mutants sounds interesting. Would also have been neat if you were able to get your super mutant companion by scooping him up first.
as someone who in the real world lives in the next town over from Natick, i couldn't help but chuckle at your pronunciation of the town "Nah tick" the proper pronunciation of the town is a long a like in cake, so it's "nay · tuhk" also i think you'd be proud of me considering that if you scale the fallout 4 map correctly over the same area of the state of Massachusetts, i live in the crater of atom, so in a sense, I am one of atoms children, who in my lifetime will be bestowed upon by Atom himself the single greatest gift, glorious division.
This series is so exciting to me that after watching your vids on and off for like a year I'm subscribing right after I leave this comment, keep up the great work king 👑
I think some vault 87 super mutants made it to the Commonwealth and integrated themselves with the Institute mutants. The main reason why I think this is because Strong will occasionally say "No green stuff here". If the Commonwealth mutants only gain new members from the institute, then why would they look for FEV? As far as they should know, the only way to get new mutants is to wait for the institute to create new ones. Then again,I don't know what the process is for them to be turned and released,so maybe they know what FEV is.
That's very interesting. The vault 87 mutants are nearly limitless in recruits as it is unlikely that they will ever be fully removed due to the lethal radiation so having some migrate north and speaking of "green stuff" that can make more supermutants. This obviously something mutant leaders would want so they probably have all raiding party's report back on any green stuff
I'm curious about the groups that found themselves in Far Harbor, they could give insight to potential numbers of mutants in areas outside the Commonwealth. It's possible that the biggest reason for the lack of mutants in the early game can also be attributed to the blocked railway north of Beantown, which restricted mutant flow. Lastly, it's perfectly plausible that the distribution of the mutants is simply down to being teleported aboveground to CIT to save power and then being driven out by the synths.
I think it would have been a really cool idea if they had a jacobstown like settlement in the glowing sea with a bunch of neutral super mutants oh you could befriend and visit or take missions to kill them. But a fortified supermutant Town out in the glowing sea would be kind of cool they picked that spot because they want to stay out of where humans come across them so they don't have problems. And they're willing to trade with people who show up peacefully
38:06 I think that this is because the Institute wants samples from the Super Mutants. They don't necessarily care if they all die, or continue to operate as a group. They just want some sanples to study. Also, Strong reveals a lot about Super Mutant culture in his dialouge. Both in his companion "admires you" talks, and his passing dialouge. From parts of it, it seems that Super Mutants are the only group that is actually communist, not the socialism of the Soviet Union or China. Looking into him would give you more insight into the culture of Super Mutants in the Commonwealth.
@@some_shitposting_idiot3023 technically, by the original textbook definitions, no nation on Earth has been truly communist (despite any names). The most they got to is socialism, where the government controls the distribution of resources. A true communist society as written by Karl Marx has not yet been achieved.
Small scale communes are doable, when social cohesion and trust is high. Can't do it on a national or even city scale. Can't know or trust enough to give up yours for someone else.
Great video Radking, really hope you keep this series up for other types of enemies! I do wanted to point out a few things about the molecular relay: loading screens suggest that it was completed "nearly a hundred years ago", which would point towards sometime AFTER 2187. This can be problematic because not only the FEV project itself started on 2178, but in 2180 the Minutemen made one of their greatest achievements: they defended Diamond City from a large Super Mutant attack. In other words, it is suggested that before the molecular relay was actually functional, the Institute releasing Super Mutants in such large numbers that they became a threat to Diamond City, and all these mutants were... for the lack of a better term... manually released from the Institute directly. By the way, I have been wondering if there might have been an exodus of Capital Wasteland Super Mutants after the events of FO3, possibly after 2282: -In FO3 we find out that Vault 87 has finally ran out of FEV (the tanks are indicated to be fully depleted), which is why the Super Mutants are looking for the location of other vaults with the hope of finding more "green stuff". -This means that at the latest, by the time the Lone Wanderer enters Vault 87, the Super Mutants have lost the ability to increase their numbers, in other words, from that point forward their numbers can only diminish as they continue engaging threats like the BoS. -In 2282 Arthur Maxson killed Shepherd, a Super Mutant leader "who was attempting to re-organize the Capital Wasteland's Super Mutants", according to BoS records on the Prydwen. -My guess is that things must have gotten really bad between 2277-2282 and Shepherd made one last push to bring together the remaining mutants, but ultimately failed. -This could further suggest that the Super Mutant threat in the Capital Wasteland finally began dying down after this event, which would finally enable the BoS to build up their strength and in turn enable their expedition to the Commonwealth in 2287. Do you think some Super Mutants from the Capital Wasteland could have ended up in the Commonwealth afterwards?
Love these! Could do this with the Gunners, or with the factions in Fallout 3! Also, you didn't include Far Harbor super mutant cartography - could be a cool video. I'm not super clear on how they got there so it'd be cool to see your theories.
Complete conjecture about the placement of the Super Mutants in the commonwealth: The Institute began disposing of Super Mutants by teleporting them several stories into the air at random places in the commonwealth. Randomness would avoid creating a pattern for the surface dwellers to notice. Due to the randomness of the teleportation, occasionally a Super Mutant would survive the process inside a high rise building. From these elevated positions, they set up raiding bases and began to scavenge the surrounding areas for food, weapons, and rope to make gorebags. The Institute became aware of the surviving Super Mutants, however they didn't stop because the Super Mutants destabilized the largest communities in the commonwealth, and actively reduced the raider population. This could also provide the reason that the Institute never stopped producing Super Mutants, even while Virgil notes that their experiments seem fruitless.
10:30 I think you'd have to bend space to teleport without having a recieving platform. So work times distance would not apply but the energy required to bend space more would also be greater.
This video was really fun, I enjoyed it a lot. Something to consider with the super mutants, they might not be merely discarded by the Institute. It's possible they may have been released with the loose order of intentionally causing chaos in the Commonwealth, to keep the area divided and easily exploited
24:00 - The super mutants would have a different problem at Natick Banks even without the Deathclaw. If I have already killed Kellogg, the Brotherhood of Steel always also puts in an appearance there to attack raiders, mutants or deathclaws alike.
The Synths in CIT are likely there because, according to Virgil, CIT is the primary insertion point for field operatives via teleportation. So keeping it clear ensures that Institute surface teams aren't spawn killed

The biggest issue supermutants have is range can you imagine a mutant with a sniper rifle
The Super Mutants likely occupy toy areas to secure toys, which they can play with in their leisure time between combats.
Based
So weird that a somewhat deep level of detail exists for these random factions across the Commonwealth but a lot of that nuance does not similarly exist in the main story
I always thought there’s probably a difference between the writers who make the environmental stories, background text lore, voice lines, and the main story
I kinda like that, it just leaves me ignoring the mains story and just exploring and collecting everything
Someone actually made a very good point. If you play the game narritively, it sucks cuz it tries to send you straight into Diamond city. But if you play it in the way of Looter-shooter exploration RPG without paying attention to the main quest,it's amazing.
@@MrDonut-mb6msI have this theory too: there are two writing teams at Bethesda. One does the main story and one all the side quests and dlc like The Pitt, Broken Steel, Far Harbour. The latter team is so much better than the main story one.
@@ergoproxy-gx2cq Todd is the director so he must deal with the main quest and main story writing team. This really speaks to his level of competence.
So you did find out how Fist is important in Super Mutant hierarchy in Commonwealth. You did really good work in your research on this topic, since not everyone has spotted how organize this group can be.
For some reason,I always interpreted Fist as being a Vault 87 mutant and the reason he rose to power was because of his experience.
this Cartography series is absolutely incdredible
Regarding the Supermutant behemoths in the low-level-areas at 4:00 ~ish: My impression was that because of the Behemoths there where no other higher lvl enemies. Gameplaywise it hightens the contrast, (after slaying a few gouls and molerats suddenly you get jumped by a behemoths... ) and lorewise it could mean that they as an Apexpredator would simply not allow any other predators beside him.
Glad you’re continuing this series, makes me appreciate the world of fallout 4 a bit more knowing the locations were more thought out

And its cool to have a more detailed map of everything in the commonwealth.
@@robinmuller6392 honestly it’d be nice to have a mod that changes it to this
@@Paag603 yeah. That would be quite awesome. Unfortunately I don't know much about creating maps and only a little bit about coding. But it would be a cool project though.
If you look for the environmental story telling in most games they have alot of hints towards those little things
Now you have me curious!
Brotherhood patrols go out that way as well... what are they looking for?
Is naticks bank the one place where it’s a walled off squared with like a church, and inside there’s always a death claw and mutants or am I thinking of the wrong place?
@@faded1887 that's the one.
The Institute could try cloning them.
@@skywise001 Who do you think made them to start with ?
I think it's likely they would retreat close to the Glowing Sea, but not right into it (Due to problems with sourcing food, water, scrap, guns, armor, and ammunition), places like Natick, the Coast Guard Pier (longer shot, but it's close enough), or Somerville Place).
Personally, I'd like to think they built a bunch of wood and scrap boats, similar to the ones used by the Orks in Lord of the Rings (Return of The King or The Two Towers, cant remember which), and then sailed to Spectacle Island to setup shop.
Assuming a Minutemen victory, I wouldn’t be shocked if Commonwealth Super Mutants were slowly wiped out by a provisional government’s expansion.
That or they keep the infighting to one on one conflicts.
If muties could reproduce they really would be the supreme race just like the master said lol
Almost like the super mutants are communists, which was why the bombs dropped in the 1st place. In other words... "war never changes"
They never stop respawning for me which was annoying when I was attempting to build up hang mans alley, everytime you visit the area theres loud gunfire from that battle over and over
Weird, when i play on survival its often an even fight and i usually get there around level 12-15

36:30 There's also Fort Strong which is the only case of supermutants and behemoths in the highest level areas.

My favourite series so far! I hope you continue it! :D
This series continues to be amazing

I'm only 12 minutes in but I had a thought, what if the Super Mutant are mutated from the people that the Institute replace with Synths
That's an interesting idea.

Thanks for doing this cartography series, its research I didn't know I needed for my fanfic sourcebook for another region.

I like the analysis you do with cartography. Very interesting and new way of looking at the commonwealth.

Love this series! The map is super cool

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUDDY 😀
I think some vault 87 super mutants made it to the Commonwealth and integrated themselves with the Institute mutants. The main reason why I think this is because Strong will occasionally say "No green stuff here". If the Commonwealth mutants only gain new members from the institute, then why would they look for FEV? As far as they should know, the only way to get new mutants is to wait for the institute to create new ones. Then again,I don't know what the process is for them to be turned and released,so maybe they know what FEV is.
That's an interesting point.
Love the video as usual. I'd watch shorts but I like your long videos the most!
Sheesh coming up one 100k nice work, love the videos man
38:06 I think that this is because the Institute wants samples from the Super Mutants.

By the way, I have been wondering if there might have been an exodus of Capital Wasteland Super Mutants after the events of FO3, possibly after 2282:
-In FO3 we find out that Vault 87 has finally ran out of FEV (the tanks are indicated to be fully depleted), which is why the Super Mutants are looking for the location of other vaults with the hope of finding more "green stuff".

Complete conjecture about the placement of the Super Mutants in the commonwealth:
The Institute began disposing of Super Mutants by teleporting them several stories into the air at random places in the commonwealth.
I like the premise of these videos
Wish someone would make some sort of mod because of these vids
give it time bound to happen
10:30 I think you'd have to bend space to teleport without having a recieving platform. So work times distance would not apply but the energy required to bend space more would also be greater.
Do the Institute ever explain WHY they make Supermutants? It's so pointlessly evil it would make Montgomery Burns scratch his head.
No, the Institute never explains why. That's also why Virgil destroyed the lab iirc.
This was extremely thorough. Love it
I really appreciate this video idea and execution. Good job!
loving this series!!
