The Bulls just needed a legit starting power forward (which they didn't have in 94-95). Grant wasn't a superstar, was never implying this.
But he was the backbone to the defense.
A steady player that would get 13 and 10 basically every night while playing great defense.
Losing him absolutely crippled the Bulls inside in 95. You would have to be blind to have not noticed.

Horace Grant was very underrated. He was part of the 3-peat Chicago Bulls from 91’-93’ season. However, after the Bulls' successful run, Grant became frustrated with his role and the team's direction. He felt underappreciated and wanted to be a more significant part of the offense. I will always have love for Horace Grant. I grew up in Orlando and he was the first major free agent the Magic acquired. The guy was automatic from mid-range in 1995 and 1996 and was a perfect fit next to Shaq. Much better defender than many remember. He wasn’t as good as Bosh was, but the role that CB1 filled on the 2011-2014 Heat was basically the role that Horace had on the 1991-1994 Bulls. My dad used to shout “Hooooorrrr” at Magic games whenever he made a big play, which was always a little awkward. Lol.

I was a BIG fan of Horace during the “Climb over the corpse of the Pistons” era and I think FANS of the team and the sport loved the guy. When he left I genuinely thought it was over and there was no chance for a future championship. Then the next year Michael came back and the year after that they got Rodman. A one-time demon to the Bulls. I think because of those events and Kukoc, it truly lessened the blow of losing him. I never forgot how he was the Bulls Rodman before Dennis, but he definitely got lost in the shuffle by Reinsdorf and Kraus. He’ll always be a favorite player of mine.
I think it didn’t help the optics that when Chicago needed him most he left as well.

54# Horace Grant is not a forgotten champion level player. He may not be known to younger fans of the sport but if you grew up with the 90's era you would for sure know Grant was!
The fact that he was a big part of Bull's original three-peat (1991-1993) or his 1994 run with the Bulls where they won over 50 games AFTER Jordan's first retirement.
Or afterwards his great run with the Magic where he was just as crucial to there sucsess as Shaq & Penny was.

This IS all relevant: I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American, male, and heterosexual. This all shows where, when, and how I grew up, and what prism I view life through. I haven't watched this yet, but I bet we see that painful (as a Blazers fan) dunk in Game 1 of the 1991-92 Finals, where he does the "Horace Grant fist pump." In 1995-96, I started shooting Horace Grant 17-Footers. After watching Game 1 of the 1992-93 Finals, I started doing Horace Grant post-up turnaround jumpers, like the one he hit over Charles Barkley. Passing: A. Defense: AAA. Intangibles: AAA. Overall: AA. I remember in 1993-94, Horace Grant said, "It would be fun to play between Shawn Kemp and Derrick Schrempf!" Being only 21 in 1994, I was SO excited to have Horace Grant in Seattle! Yes, we got him in 1999, at age 34, five years too late. He did an ok job for the Sonics, playing out of position at center all season long. When Nick Collison came to the Sonics in 2004-05, some compared him to Jack Sikma, Tom Gigliotti or Adam Kaefe. I compared Nick Collison to Horace Grant and Brian Grant. I wonder how Horace Grant would have been with Portland, in the 1990's, if they could have gotten him, somehow.

17:30 I was born in 1973, and yes, growing up, if you had to wear glasses, "life was over." BUT, sometime in the generation below me, even kids with glasses seemed to have an "I can't see without my glasses, so I don't mind wearing them" attitude. In 2016, was it still considered a bad thing, for kids, to wear glasses? Note my birth year. Even at 25, I felt more confident around women, when I wore contacts, rather than glasses. Still do today, at 52 in 2025.

People shit on Scottie for the Bulls struggling a bit in the 94-95 season before Jordan came back, but they really don’t understand just how big of a loss it was for the Bulls to not have Horace. Even if Jordan started the season, the Bulls still wouldn’t have got to the Finals that season because they were soft in the middle without Horace, which is why they went out and got Rodman.

WTF Horace Grant has never been considered a forgotten champion. The longer you keep ignoring John Drew, the stupider you look, the man averaged 20pts, 7rb and 1.5 stls per game over his 11yr career and you continue to ignore him?

no exaggeration, I think if you paired Grant with Stockton he could've been putting up Malone numbers. He was a very efficient scorer for how low his usage rate was.

Ridiculous. Malone was a freak of nature. Grant maximized his potential as a third wheel on a championship team. That was his potential ... not becoming the next Karl Malone.

Even though Horace Grant didn't get too much credit, I still believe he was the backbone of those Chicago bulls championship teams at the power forward position from 1991-93 alongside MJ and Pippen and adding his veteran experience to the Lakers championship in 2001....A solid role player who had the luxury to play on some pretty solid playoff teams with some of the iconic superstars like Jordan, Shaq and Kobe...He should be recognized for his hard work, toughness and persistence while making his contributions to the iconic NBA franchises Chicago, Orlando (Even though he didn't win a championship there, fun team to watch in the 90s if you were an NBA fan at that time) and the Lakers...Also, the goggles 🥽 he wore on court were pretty cool
