I played this at my Mom's funeral with my niece on vocals. She became too emotional to continue so I started singing as loud as I could as I had no mic, when all of a sudden, one by one, the entire congregation joined in and finished the song, getting every word right. Just an incredible moment for us and send off for our Mother.
That is awesome, man! And may your Mom continue to rest in peace!

A song from a son to his dad. As a dad of a son, there is no higher honor than to be acknowledged as a positive force for your replacement in the world.
Who else listened to this song for the last 30 years and never knew he wrote it for his father? I was so touched when i found out about it.

True talent, been a Bread fan since 1972, song writers of today don't compare plus Davids fabulous voice is outstanding.

David's string arrangements have always been highly underrated.
As for the lyrics, not a wasted line. The music doesn't bore us, it gets to the chorus.

Wow! I was 15 at the time when this song came out. I had a girlfriend at the time and she had all the Bread singles. We would lay on the couch together and listen to all the great songs of Bread. It was rather magical. Every time I listen to these great songs it brings me back. This performance is fantastic. Thank you David Gates!

The man is a treasure. One of the best song writers of the soft rock genre. David Gates still this marvel ou voice as he never over extended his vocals when younger. His natural range was where he sang and still sings. What a master.
This song reminds me of my parents who have both have passed away and gave up their dreams to have a family neither of them so they adopted four children from four different families and gave us a home and family and love and roots and then finally our wings.

So true. I only learned that a few weeks ago. My dad died in 1989 and mum 2 years ago. Love of parents is so different from romantic love (focused on for too many years.) I really would give up everyting to have my so loved parents back.

What is ABSOLUTELY terrible is the fact that David Gates & Bread are not in the music hall of fame! That should be a crime. He is extremely talented . He can play the Piano and a bunch of other instruments ! There are groups who made it into the Music Hall of fame that are not even close to being as good as David Gates!

This is one of my favourite songs ever. Love Bread, the first LP I bought was by them. A couple of years ago they performed in Cape Town, I went alone as no-one wanted to go with me. It was the most amazing concert ever, they sounded just the same all those years later

Thanks for posting this. I got to see David and Billy perform together at a small theater in Ventura, CA back in the 90's. This brought back memories of one of the best concerts (and I have been to a lot of concerts) I have ever been to. Thanks again.
