Hoop Taping Secrets: Continuous, Seamless Spirals

- How to hide where your tape jobs begin and end, so that your taping creates one continuous, never-ending spiral around the hoop!
I've been meaning to create this tutorial for a while. There are two main "keys" for this technique: The first is in the first layer of tape you lay down. Don't stop taping when you get back to the beginning, keep going until your second wrap of tape lays nicely over one of the original wraps. You now have a continuous spiral to follow with all of your other tapes, without having to measure anything!
The second key is to start each layer of tape in a different spot on the hoop. This prevents a big pile up of edges in one spot.
Use these methods, and people will never be able to find where you "started"!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I have been making hoops for almost three years and my no.1 biggest challenge is getting my spirals to line up at the end every single time. If I work slowly I find they come closer to lining up but it takes longer. Your overlapping at the end technique has changed all of this! Thank you!
Jess, I've been meaning to thank you for this tutorial! I've been using your tips for making the seamless spirals and they really work! THANK YOU SO MUCH. My hoops are so nice and so much less frustrating to tape than they used to be!!
Ahhhh I wish I would have thought to check youtube when I taped my first hoop a week ago, glad I found you still have 1 hoop left to tape, good video!
You are a tape queen! Thanks a bunch for this tutorial, i really want to try it soon.
Thanks! I am to make a hoop today so I'll definately give your technique a try.
I can see this as being one of my favorite vids I will watch over and over till I get it lol :-P This info is like GOLD to me! I just started my hoop making business and this is awesome! :-D.THANK YOU!!!
Yes. That doesn't mean you won't have to adjust the angle of the second tape as you go, you'll want to make sure it's staying even with the first tape. If you're using a second shiny tape like I did, you may have to cut it and restart in a few places to keep it even. With a gaff tape that has more give, you shouldn't have to cut it at all, just make sure it is overlapping one edge of the "perfect" spiral and it will meet up perfectly at the end.
Very clever and it looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing this great technique.
You're very welcome! I'm glad I could help you out. :)
Thanks a lot for this, looks great, I'll be trying it out :-)
The first one. Once the metallic tape meets back up on one spiral perfectly, you follow that with the other tapes. If it's not making sense, you can try starting your second tape at the same place you cut your first tape until you get a feel for how it works.
lovelovelove the rasta colors
Super tutorial. Thanks
You still make it look MUCH easier than it is! LOL Great job tho!
Yes. :) It was a special request!
I would love to see how it works out for you!
Thanks sister!
Ok, I so need to lean this but u did confuse me a bit lol :-P The first two tapes...did u wrap them twice, or was I seeing things?
The first tape is wrapped once. But when you get back to the beginning (where you first started taping), just keep wrapping until you start to perfectly overlap the original tape.
After that, use the first tape you laid down as a guide for laying down your second tape. Since you've already made a complete spiral with the first tape, you shouldn't have to overlap with the second. However, you will likely cover up some of the "scrap" tape from the beginning of the first tape.
You are the BEST!!! Thank you so much!!
Have fun with it! It's kinda like magic. :)
So I keep going with the first tape until it goes back on itself nearly perfectly then I cut it? Or do I complete the circle before cutting it so I can have something to follow the whole way the second tape?
thank you for posting this, very helpful! btw, cool hair :)
Thank you! :)
YES! Ty very much!
So I put the second tape at the same angle as the perfect tape and it'll end up right?
What you didn't see is me cutting the green tape every other spiral to make sure it lines up properly with the red. ;)
Which part is confusing? I'll try to explain it better. It also makes more sense as you're doing it. :)
yay thank you so much~~!!
Ok thanks a bunch :)
You're welcome! :)
I know it's kind of confusing trying to explain it, but give it a try! It should make more sense as you start to tape and see how the tape acts. If you're still confused after trying it, get back with me and I'll do my best to explain further. Good luck! :)
You're welcome! :) Thanks for watching!
You're welcome! Try it out, and if it's still not making sense, let me know. :)
It depends on the size of the hoop and how far apart you're making your spirals. The hoops I normally tape are 43" in diameter, and it takes me about 5 yards of each color to cover the hoop. The one I taped in this video is a little smaller, so it took less.
How many feet of tape would I need to cover a 40 inch 3/4 OD hoop?
If I'm using three or four colors of tape, it takes about six yards of each color for me to wrap my hoops. I would recommend having a little extra on hand if this is your first hoop, just in case!
My second tape kept to lining up and covering the first tape in some spots so I gave up :(
It definitely takes practice to get the hang of the spacing, and how the tapes lie. Give it a rest for today and pick it up again when you've slept some and don't want to throw the hoop across the room. :)
ITS A RASTA HOOP!
*learn* ;-)
I'm so confused
oooeeee O.o
