Thank you. This is very helpful. Fortunately, RUclips allows you to watch in slow motion. I'd never taped before and needed to see everything explained slowly and in detail.
Thanks so much! I've started decorating a few of my bare hoops that I've made and your taping tutorials are seriously invaluable! Hope you're enjoying your holidays, as well :)
This is the best, thank you so much! I just got into hooping, and these are super helpful! I am going through your entire playlist :) Would you consider making a video on Where and Which on buying a learner's hoop? Weight, size etc, that would be awesome for beginners like me!
So sorry I missed this comment! You know, I always meant to make a video like that, I've stopped making hoop videos for the most part but I still think something like that would be worth making for those finding my stuff and needing a place to go since I closed my shop. Let me know if you still need help, I'm happy to point you toward some shops I recommend!
Jess Wagstrom wow, yes that would be awesome! I am back in the U.S.A, and I am at loss where to get my hoops here! (Hoops were too big for suitcases haha). Online shopping recommendation would be lovely since I am in the middle of nowhere. Thank you so much for replying!!!
Hi. Great demo. Question for you. I need to tape over some hoops that have seen some asphalt, if you know what I mean. The old tape is scuffed and not really smooth. Should I tape over it all or do I need to try to remove the old tape? Thanks for the insight.
Do you have any tips to share on making an infinity (figure 8) collapsible hoop as far as taping the edges around the connectors? Thanks in advance for any advice you may offer!
So what I do is I cut the tape about 1/4” before the connection point (I don’t worry about precision), then tape around the edge with a strip of 1” gaff to cover the tape edges and make the connection points easier to identify. I have been adding a dab of super glue the past few years as some gaff tapes don’t like to stay as stuck as others!
Hi Jess, thanks for the excellent video! Silly question coming up: once a hoop is taped, is it no longer possible to collapse it? Thank you in anticipation!
Hi Mae! Not a silly question! As long as you don't tape over the connection points, the hoop will stay collapsible. I'll tape right up to them, cut the tape, and then do a wrap of one tape around the edges to cover up the scraps. Hopefully that helps!
@@jessherselfable I've legit been scanning hoop taping videos to find out this very answer... started checking the comment section and voila 😍🤩😍🤩 Thank you SO much! After thought: Wish there were tutorials for taping a collapsible hoop and taping/protecting decorative hoopse (LED, reflective, UV, etc.) 😎 There may not be a huge difference but the visual is nice.
hi Jess what I would like to know is where to buy those tapes, since I am from Croatia every page i looked had shipping that costs more then stuff I want to buy, any advice :)
I have a naked practice hoop that has been reserved for practice usage and as such I applied grip tape without decorative tape. I'd like to start using it to perform. Any way to apply decorative tape without having to remove and reapply the expensive grip tape?
Mmmm, you could, but I wouldn't recommend it. Applying it over grip tape won't give the deco tape a smooth surface, so it's likely to buckle and crinkle. Plus, the deco tape is significantly more expensive than grip tape, so I'd recommend taking a deep breath and removing the grip tape and starting fresh. OR, you could buy a new blank hoop to use your deco on because removing tape from a hoop is a giant pain in the ass, lol. :)
Hi jess, I am new making hoops, and I never buy a taped hoop cause there is not so many hoopmakers here in Argentina.. Should I tape my hoops with scotch tape after decorating them? to protect the hoop?
I would never put Scotch tape on a hoop, it gets brittle and cracks and looks ugly, lol. Most hoops don't really need protective clear tape, but if you think you'll be rough on your hoop, there in clear vinyl tape you can get. I'm not sure of the availability in Argentina, but you can get it from Identi-tape and it's called "Crystal Clear". You would only put it over the deco tape, not the grip tape (otherwise it would have no grip!) :)
I get my tapes from identi-tape.com and hoopsupplies.com. The thin tape is 1/2" gaffer. It will work with any number of tapes, as long as you know how much space you need to leave and have a way to measure it! :)
It's not necessary, but I like taping hoops because it makes them pretty and unique. I also like the added grip you get from the textured grip tapes, but even the shiny decorative tapes give some grip. The tape also adds a bit of weight, so if you're taping a lighter tubing like polypro or HDPE, and you like a bit more heft to your hoop, the tape can make it look nice while adding that weight. :) If you don't tape your hoop, some people choose to sand them for grip. But even that's unnecessary if you feel comfortable using a bare hoop. I don't like the feeling, though, because it's too slippery and difficult to control.
@@jessherselfable but the strange thing is when I did that eventually the tape would completely encircle itself again and I would have to cut more and start from there. I want to do one tape in one go. Is that possible?
Hi Jess, can we use your video on our website as resource on taping? Please advise. Our company is GMR Gymnastics Sales, Inc.. Thank you and we appreciate it very much.
It does not sound silly at all! It took me a TON of practice to get to where I could tape quickly and consistently. Hoop tape is really unforgiving. Good luck with your taping!
I used to get them from ident-tape.com, but I think they stopped selling hoop tapes. Now you can get them from hoopologie.com and hoopsupplies.com/shop/, they both have a good selection of tapes!
These are the tips I’ve been looking for! THANK YOU! 💙🙏💙. It’s absurd how long some of these taping videos are and how little that actually teach you.
That idea of using the tape's backing to help you keep your spacing is brilliant! Thanks for sharing.

How do you wrap a hoop with only a single tape?
Art Science Wonder You’ll do it the same method I laid out here, except you’ll set the angle so the tape hits itself.
