    Curious as to why started with the trees vs the background. Did it make it more difficult to work the color in between the branches?

      Hello, thanks for your question! It was done like this for a few reasons. The first was the trees have to be put in before the background as the leaves actually follow the form and strokes making up the background. The second was that Van Gough apparently laid in the large compositional elements first and then painted around them. This way he avoided having to create any underpainting and could get most work done in one session. Traditionally painters would lay in an under painting, allow it to dry (which could take over a week to become touch dry with Oil paint -the paint they all used in most works), and then lay over a top layer. Impressionists and post impressionists were more interested in getting the colour down quickly before the conditions changed.

      Yes, and not the way Van Gogh painted. It's beautiful, but it's somehow too sterile and without Van Gogh's playfulness and colors.
