I just lost my loving Mum this spring and she had her share of being treated badly specially in her later years when she was ill and I can’t stand what’s happened to this lady. Thank you so VERY much for this, I'm quite overwhelmed at your generosity - we're half way there with funds and I'm going to be spreading the word again soon in case anyone missed this. I really want to complete these works over winter so that the garden is a riot of colour in spring and that this lady has a lot of company with many creatures visiting and sharing the garden with her. Thank you, once again, this means a lot and I will definitely relay all these positive messages to her :) Very best wishes, Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton My pleasure, I hope you get the rest of the funds! This story really touched me, and I know a little about such obnoxious neighbours. We have a relatively new neighbour at the summer cottage, and after razing his own trees he took down two ancient small pines on our property. The last one he pressured my mum while she was ill to take down and it broke her heart. I will never forgive that. My grandparents loved those trees as well. Please keep us posted, it would be wonderful if she gets her garden in time for spring and can look forward to all the colours and life. 🌸🌱🌾🦎🐝

So many people have been so generous already and I can't wait to show her how much people care. A tree in memory of her husband to replace the one the neighbours made her pay to have cut down, against her wishes really but they're taking advantage of her good nature and I'm about to put a further stop to it. I almost can't wait to plant a native hedge that will give her privacy and to give her the pond that will be appreciated by lots of birds this winter, as well as giving her something to look forward to for Spring. That is such a terribly sad story, brought tears to my eyes.

However you are in the process of lining that incredibly dark and horrible cloud with a magical silver lining. This is such a beautiful thing to be doing. Hi Miche, so good to hear from you and to read your wonderful words, you never fail :) I'm absolutely determined to bring this garden back to life and to make a sanctuary and haven not only for our creatures desperately in need, but a place of respite for her too. The garden will be maintenance-friendly BUT at the same time giving her something to occupy her mind and see flourish. I am hoping I can achieve this over the winter so that she can see the birds bathing in the new pond, birds visiting newly placed feeders, winter bulbs providing much needed nectar after our pollinators wake after their slumber - so many things in my mind, and people have been so generous and supportive already, we're nearly at the £5k mark and I couldn't be more grateful. I'm pretty overwhelmed by everyone's generosity, including your own and I promise that I'll be documenting this from beginning to end and I'll be on hand of course to ensure any maintenance issues in the future are taken care of by me. Very best wishes, and many thanks - Joel

@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Thank you for your lovely message. What you are doing brings such warmth to my heart. It really does touch me very deeply. I myself personally understand what this will bring to that dear lady. Several years ago, my dear mum died in the most horrendous way. It was nature that took my hand, threw me a comfort blanket, and helped me to keep on keeping on. In every flower, every butterfly, every bee, every little birdy, the running of a stream, and so on that I looked upon, I saw my mum. I felt close and connected to her.
What you are doing is going to be an invaluable source of comfort for this lady. More than you can imagine.

Thank you Paul, so much. Thankfully the neighbour issue has died down a little, I am hoping that this is because they have realised how alone she is and that this won't be taken to their advantage - it certainly won't be where I'm concerned. She and her husband worked so very hard for so many years to give their garden over to the creatures we know that are so desperately in need of our help. I am determined to give her a garden that will encourage the wildlife back, keep her company and allow her to manage areas and to keep her busy - I am hoping this can be done over winter to give her something to look forward to in the spring and of course a pond that will encourage birds to bathe and feeding areas near the house so she has some company too, whilst waiting for spring to burst into life with many bulbs and other plants to support our pollinators after their winter-slumber. Very best wishes to you - Joel

It would be great if we also could get some companies to sponsor this, maybe some garden centre or something? Great publicity for them to do some charity work too :)
Since I got my disability and wheelchair, watching the wildlife visiting my balcony has become extremely important. The more mobility issues you have, the more important it is to have accessible wildlife at your doorstep. My grandmother, who also recently got a wheelchair, can no longer access her garden that was her joy for many years. I hope this old lady can get a beautiful garden that she can continue to be in for many years, even if her mobility gets worse!

Hi Tommu, £5 is not small, it really will make a difference, I promise you. I feel so anxious about what they might be telling her, she's quite timid and they are of course taking advantage of her good nature but hopefully I can get there real soon and make my presence known. I did offer to speak to the neighbours and explain that this garden has nothing to do with them having a water-logged garden whatsoever, but the offer was turned down. I am gutted I couldn't get there in time to save that tree, but I'm determined a new one will be planted in her husband's name and that she can look forward to spring, and see the changes during winter. I don't know how much work taking care of a pond is -- but I hope whatever you do for her ends up being low-maintenance -- for an older widow who has predatory neighbors who are trying to shame her about her yard (really what psychos), something she can easily maintain seems like the best solution. If she gets a pond I'm sure they'll complain about that too, I hope she's getting it all on record w/her phone. I hope whatever she gets ends up being enjoyable & can bring her some peace and joy but also be sustainable. My mother is a widow who just turned 65 and still has to work to pay her bills and I can't believe how many rude comments she's gotten about her lawn being brown in the summer... It can be worse the nicer the neighborhood you live in too, because rich neighbors can be so entitled. They don't understand what it's like to have limited resources (money, energy/health and otherwise).

Thank you Hayley, it will be as low maintenance as possible, but at the same time I want to provide things that will also keep her busy, taking into account her abilities of course. I will be returning regularly to maintain the pond and any other areas that she may struggle with, but I want it to be a respite for her and something to view over the winter and see come to life again in spring. I'm providing constant support and advice, albeit remotely at the moment as we live so far from each other - but the neighbours seem to have calmed for now. So sorry to hear about your mum, really I am. Best wishes, Joel

This is really nice. I have often thought about how to add more nature ponds, because unless you are this chap Joel, you will run out of gardens. I myself have managed a paltry 3 before running out. And this appears to be a good way of getting more ponds in. Ideally, though, I would love to get access / permission to public land as private gardens do over time change hands and the fate of the pond wouldn't be guaranteed. I have even thought of approaching new build developments as the ones round here do seem to leave a token bit of greenery, but that would likely be a fools' errand.

    • @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
      @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton  8 месяцев назад +1

I know exactly what you mean David! I've seen some ponds and "wildlife areas" put into new build developments that don't even meet 1% of the diversity that is lost and destroyed to build these homes. Trees planted incorrectly that look fine for a season and then just stand there as a dead-reminder of what was lost, ponds that are overgrown or completely dried out, or over-grown with non-native plants. It's all a sales technique usually and I am yet to witness a real change. 3 ponds isn't paltry, believe me! I fully appreciate how lucky I am to do this work, but it doesn't stop me being very envious of some people's gardens and wishing they were my own :) This lady deserves a beautiful garden again and the company of the creatures she gardened for over many years but has lost. Best wishes, Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Well, crowdfunding this pond and perhaps others is a brilliant idea and I hope it can be built upon. I don't have much, but I gave what little I could towards the new pond - and I'm really pleased to see there are others who can donate much more than me. I really hope that you meet your target very soon.
I know exactly what it is like to have toxic neighbours, repeatedly - I'm sorry to say. (I moved away from one set of toxic neighbours and within a couple of years was bang next door to another that was even worse).
They can make life so stressful.
You did the right thing, Joel, telling your friend to get the police involved. A lot of bullies will continue harassing, getting more oppressive and threatening - until you call the police, and then they just back right off. It's what we did, and your friend has to pluck up the nerve to turn the tables on them. They start getting lippy - just turn round and ask if they want another visit from the police. They don't like that.
A nice new pond will please this lady, and it'll be great if this could be done this winter. I wish I still worked as a gardener down in London, I'd have helped out.

Thanks Debbie, so very much. It's exactly as you describe, it's quietened down a bit, but no doubt because this rather timid lady who is averse to confrontation has done what they have wanted so far. They even said they'd send someone round to assess her garden and the pond and she would have to pay for their time! I offered to go back round and speak to the neighbours but they refused this "help", no doubt because they wouldn't be able to argue or convince me that the pond and garden are causing their problems - it's a high water-table and they know this already. I'm gutted about the tree, so many birds used it, bees around the ivy flowers etc, now nothing. I'm really hoping I can not only get a replacement tree but also a native hedge in to try to give her some privacy, planted a suitable distance from the fence to allow maximum space but no one leaning over the fence and destroying it. I absolutely hate the idea of her being penned in in her own garden (you'll know this feeling no doubt) and am determined to give her a place of respite and memories and something to look forward to over the winter months, and to see the grateful birds and other creatures using it before it establishes in the spring. I really appreciate your help Debbie, thanks so much - very best wishes, Joel

Not only am I going to provide a place of respite and privacy, but I am going to ensure that they're put back in their place - very best wishes, Joel

Chipped in a small amount. Very sad to hear about her loss. If was still living in London I'd try and offer a hand.
She absolutely needs to keep a record of the neighbours behavior, along with the opinion/evidence over the cherry tree. I suspect the neighbours are just making cover stories to try and remove the tree. If they don't like it, they should not be lying or harassing her. If she is getting verbal abuse, she should record it. While you are technically supposed to disclose when you are recording for evidence, if they perjure themselves in court then covert recording can be allowed in some cases. The neighbours soumd like right jobsworth so and so's and need someone to stand up to them to put them in their place.
Hope you manage to create something nice for her in memory of her husband. I've been trying to slowly help improve the communal green spaces where I live. Many of the elderly residents have been delighted otherwise neglected space has got a new lease of life.
