Yuval Noah Harari on When Your Taxes Pay for War

  • At the start of this century, something amazing happened: governments worldwide started spending more on healthcare than on the military. This was unthinkable for most of history, but humans proved that it’s achievable. Unfortunately, the current resurgence of war has led global defense budgets to jump to a record high. Nevertheless, the unprecedented achievements of the recent past remind us that the decline of war is not some divine miracle: it’s a reality we can collectively choose.

even though i don't like paying taxes, i used to think it was the responsible thing to do if we want a better society. After learning more about my country's role in the middle east, i'm reconsidering this..

The fact that money is not nominally assigned to war machines in the official budget, does not mean you are not paying for a war. When you pay for intelligence agencies, police, instead of a proper education; when you pay for international policies that export inflation and conflict through debt and political unrest, rather than infrastructure and health; when most of your budget is to cover debt, instead of investments, you are also paying for war

You take freedom and peace and democracy for granted. Especially in America where people haven't experienced a war on their soil since 1865... For instance, people have zero understanding of Russia and they know nothing about Eastern Europe but feel entitled to have an "opinion" on Putin or Ukraine...

The 10% world expenditure on healthcare is misleading. The figure is hugely inflated by the US which leads the world in nominal healthcare expenditure.
In truth the money doesn't go towards improving people's health.
Healthcare in America is an enormous swindle that produces gigantic bureaucracies and enormous profits for shareholders while delivering among the worst health outcomes in developed countries.
A better label for so-called US healthcare is US sickness profiteering.
Excluding the United States the world figure for healthcare expenditure falls below the figure for war spending.

    • @mmaximk
      @mmaximk 18 дней назад

Those figures also do not include all of the off-balance-sheet expenditures on intelligence agencies, covert paramilitary support, black weapons programs and military-industrial research and development.
The picture painted here is misleading.

And descant on mine own deformity:
And therefore, since I cannot prove a lover,
To entertain these fair well-spoken days,
I am determined to prove a villain
And hate the idle pleasures of these days.

You can have violence without warfare... Such as by way of applying power and hatred to gain advantage or oppress those who you perceive as needing to be more subservient. It is not really that much better to be passively violent than actively violent. I would assert that while active violence is shocking subversive violence is more psychological twisting, that the pressing of the appearance of virtue across the true hostility like so much cheese, has the effect of actually grating the peace and melting faith. Mixing love and blood and joy and hate.
I feel like if I keep going with the metaphor it'll be a strange spaggetti thing that seems very silly but you get what I'm saying!

Sorry but I have sent this comment elsewhere and thought here was also a good place to post it. I will try not do it again. Honest.
Please get on the good side of palestinians. When finally oil will be no more in the region in ten years (geologists say so) it will stop being profitable for the U.S.A. to invest in your protection and therefore they will stop protecting you (this already happened in Afganistan. foreign armies fled when oil reservoirs depletted). If you don't improve your relationships somehow with the muslim community on the region, without U.S.A.'s protection all your surounding neighbours will go against you and you won't last much (no one could). I'm European. I want to show the rest of the world (or try at least) that the path to justice, fairness, progress and happiness is the path of western democracies (if possible, laic republics with freedom of faith for its citizens). To accomplish that is very important Israel stands its ground in the middle east but as I said, in ten years it won't if things don't improve. Please, reflect and change your ways. Asap. As you say all those muslim countries are rather violent. As you say the problem will only stop when they will become more peaceful. How can that be done ? Bombarding palestinians ? This only makes them even more violent. Give them palestinians good things (a free state for themselves, hospitals, schools or whatever or at least stop bombarding them).
Show those muslim countries that unlike them who use violence even within their own borders with their own people, you use peace instead even with those who are not of your own. Lead by example. Someone has to break this endless cursed cycle of pain and suffering. Only the best can. Show them the best are you. A western republic democracy. We common people are extremely simple and pragmatic (due to thousands years of evolution forcing us to be so). They will follow your example if they percieve they obtain good things. If they don't bc of their fanatism at least they will not hate your people so much and will allow you to stay in your homeland. I they don't bc of, once again, their fanatism, like you say, I don't like either what I will say now but your people, sadly, once again, will have to leave elsewhere.....or well, I won't even say the other option. But it is an option. The last one. If you think otherwise please do tell how you think the problem can be solved. Like you I also like to listen to smart comments, ideas or solutions. Sadly on this video you haven't offered none. Maybe mine are silly, naive, unrealistic or whatever but I have tried at least. Like you said the essence, the soul of the issue here is the violence and the narrow mindedness of a very, very, very large community. How to make them more peaceful and open minded ? With care and knowledge ? Don't know for sure but someone has to.

  • @parasitius

While with just this clip I'm likely missing some context, judging this clip alone the idea presented is not intelligent at all. It's pretending a consequence (the amount of violence necessary) is somehow a primary reality rather than derivative fact of the types of governments the populations of the world are willing to tolerate. The more people are OK with governments that don't uphold individual rights, the more violence will be necessary to essentially liberate ourselves as individual. DEMOCRACY won't help and should not be promoted, just look what evil will be voted in under democracy when the population accepts certain evil ideologies like far-left American politics or Islam.

As a historian and public intellectual, Yuval does not represent Israel or Israel's government so I am not sure why you are posing your question in such a way but he probably would have an intelligent answer to give in response. I would think Yuval is almost certainly opposed to Netanyahu's government, its actions and the actions taken by the IDF in Gaza. Israel's militarism is largely a result of ultra nationalism and religious fundamentalism which has created a militant Judaism, that combined with the collective psychology of 70+ years of being faced with existential annihilation by its surrounding neighbors while also grappling with the psychological impact of its Ashkenazi diaspora community experiencing the worst genocide in history at the hands of Europeans. As one of the only free and democratic nations in the region, Israel absolutely has a mantle of responsibility to bring peace to the middle east and so far it's extreme sectarianism, sense of exceptionalism and rise in its own religious extremism in parallel to Islamist extremism exhibited by groups like Hamas is helping to create a disaster.
