This is 6 years old but I appreciate and recognize the effort that went into compiling and scoring this. Well done :)
Thanks Diddle. Theres a new video of Staggered Zoom effect from various movies on the channel, as well.
MrHopeTelevision I’ll check it out, keep up the good work :)
Great post, and still a very effective display of zoom pull techniques. So many classic moments. Cheers.
Its 9 now bro
When you removed music from movies and not removing the sound and adding the soundtrack
That made this video so creepy
Cheers, that was actually a most difficult part, finding sounds to match the original movie sound track
As a kid, Poltergeist’s “growing hallway” had me running for the exit. So incredibly terrifying.
The vertigo effect/dolly zoom is probably my favorite effect in any movie.
Spider-Man no way home?
The one scene with the door must be the best use for this effect.
agreed. it was epic.
Poltergeist is a great movie and that shot is just the cherry on top
Ive always hated this effect but that scene was awsome
Bates Motel
I've gotta say the example from The Poltergeist impressed me the most, that looks really good.
Yeah, that was very well done, but I love the scene from psycho. Not everything in that scene holds up to a modern audience, but the overhead shot at the top of the stairs and the sudden approach of the attacker from an an angle we are aware of but the victim is not...that is still unsettling today.
Especially considering it went from the dolly zoom then transitioned into chasing her down the hall. That must’ve been hard
Everything time I see the vertigo effect it reminds me of anxiety. For me, thats exactly how anxiety feel like in my body. Like every feeling is like a vortex in to my chest
The world closing in on you
0:55 Great acting! XD
LMAO
Nice Video clip! Excuse me for the intrusion, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you tried - Dinanlinson Taking Peace Approach (google it)? It is a good one of a kind guide for healing your vertigo and dizziness permanently without the hard work. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my work colleague got amazing results with it.
dont ''XD''
SoundMaster ok then. Cx
better
The Jaws one is easily the best, most iconic and least gimmicky.
this video was so eerie
Elliot Walker thanks elliot! i was aiming for some kind of mood, eerie will do
It’s the Koyaanisqatsi music that does it. That whole movie is just straight up disturbing.
I think Fellowship of the Ring also used this when Frodo senses the the ring wraiths coming, and tells the other hobbits to get off the road.
You're right. I remember that scene. Perfect example
@@CaughtInTheLoop I remember seeing that scene for the first time, thinking what sorcery is this.
1:34
Koyaanisqatsi... A perfect movie transcended by a perfect soundtrack. If it is not done yet, I suggest you to watch Visitors, the last Reggio's masterpiece. Vertigo effect is also used in one of the greatest french movie according to me: La Haine from Mathieu Kassovitz.
Expert use of Philip Glass. Added a real sense of melancholy to these vignettes.
I love the ambient sound in the background. the way you blended it is fantastic. It mutes the original music and masks everything in a filter. It's great. How'd you do it?
All I did was trying isolate as best as I could the dialogue... the voices and then I added in the sound effects which were as close as I could get to the original sound ... then I added in the Philip glass soundtrack. Thanks for the comment as well
@@MrHopeTelevision u hiding out on the instructions
@@blessedandfavored9242 I don't know what you mean
It's Philip Glass. Simple as that.
@@leof6578 not just and only. He did say that he isolated the dialogue as much as he could and you did the rest of the audio so that he could put his own sound effect that are as close to the original as possible. Which means that the footsteps that we here have been put in by him personally, and then he chose Philip Glass. It's a wicked cool effect
La Haine probably has one of the best vertigo shots in cinematography.
I LOVE that you used the koyaanisqatsi soundtrack! so dramatic.
Vertigo effect usually works with the music playing with the scene.
Pretty cool that you created/uploaded this.. I just watched vertigo (for the umpteenth time) and decided to read about the restoration...and, the "vertigo effect" is mentioned, and here i is.
Fascinating
The 2:56 one looks so smooth :o
Thanks for hosting this video. I needed a fresh reminder how it worked since I was never able to in a production class. Fortunately it's a technique used sparingly in cinema and at the best of times to intensify the moment. Not sure why it applies irl when I'm in a hurry, it seems like the destination (while on foot) takes longer to get to and creates this weird illusion. ._.
There's also a couple in The Fellowship of the Ring and Event Horizon, really stunning visual effect.
Everybody's Gangsta until the forest does a vertigo effect
Great editing and superb use of music. Very enjoyable.
Thanks for this great video. Really good display of the effect. My favourites being Marnie and Vertigo.
Nice upload. Another movie that makes great use of the Vertigo-effect is Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451. No suprise there of course as Truffaut was heavily influenced by Hitchcock.
best example is 14 seconds long (really!) from the french film La Haine
The best vertigo shot is in The Fellowship of the Ring
Well Christopher, it doesn't actually say push/zoom shot, it says Vertigo Effect which is exactly what the Psycho process shot creates
MrHopeTelevision Actually, it does not create vertigo in that shot or any other you put up.
StillSeeking "to hell with you and to hell with the internet"
MrHopeTelevision you know it is also called the dolly zoom.
Or just a zolly shot.
Thank you for making this, I really enjoyed it!
I can't recognize the "effect" in the 1st clip (from "Psycho")
It was how the camera followed the man as he ascended the stairs. It kept him in about the same place in frame while everything behind him zoomed out.
@@EndgameAngel But that's not the Vertigo-effect, that's zooming out while keeping the main character's size basically the same, while the vertigo-shot as I got taught is a combination of making the camera either move forward while zooming out proportionally, or have the camera move backwards while zooming in (Apollo 13 scene).
@@Dutch3DMaster Then I suppose the person who made this video used the wrong scene? I don't see that particular shot as it's defined in this scene.
@@EndgameAngel It could be, I don't know the first movie to be honest, so it might just be way more subtle, but you would notice it because the perspective changes, and the pattern in the carpet stays in the same place next to the woodwork of the stairs (which would change when the camera would start to move.
All in all, this was a very good collection of the effect in question.
@@Dutch3DMaster i think the first movie is psyco (sorry for my english)
Jaws definitely has the best one for sure
Between the effect and the music I'm suddenly kinda high
i love old movies...
I agree
Aw man, that Jaws shot is magnificent
"Taking lives" have a scene with this effect too.
All of the original music has been removed, which is a bit odd
I fucking love this effect it gets me hyped every time I see it
The "Marnie" clip looks very cool
In opinion this effect looks best if it’s quick
I had no idea it was also used in Apollo 13, and I must have seen that film dozens of times.
To me that basically says how oblivious we can be to certain tricks and also how well they can work to heighten the atmosphere in a scene.
Should have done 8 and included Michael Jackson's Thriller, where his girlfriend sees he's turned into a zombie, and gets shocked.
+Kodanshi Helcarver i left out a few to be honest, thriller would have been good!. Especially with some eerie philip glass in the background
When your walking to school, but you realized you didnt do homework 0:55
The first scene (the one from Psycho) is NOT a vertigo shot.
0:55 well, this is perfect acting
Hehe its awesome
Scarface had a great dolly zoom scene too!
There's one in SCARFACE with Al Pacino that serves no purpose, and some accidental ones in EASY RIDER.
kinda trippy to see these kind of stuff
Which is the film at 2:47 ?
Marny by Hitchcock
@@MrHopeTelevision Thank you very much!
Quiz Show one was the best
I love it.
Love the Koyaanisqatsi music
this so eerie ans i love it
Music made this so creepy
The 1st movie! Is that the house used in movie Conjuring?
Che film è quello con la tipa con il vestito rosso che entra in camera di corsa e viene risucchiata dalla finestra?
Poltergeist (1982)
Another example is music video:
Borgore & Dudu Tassa - Wayak :)
there`s a vertigo effect or a push pull in the dinner scene with Henry and Jimmy on Goodfellas, is very subtle, is beautiful and effective. Why is not here?
What is the music that you used?
Philip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi
my favorite shot!
Dunno why you added your own foly sounds, they don't suit the picture at all.
I wanted to see what I'll be like without music and just the soundtrack of philip glass.. I personally thpught it workd pretty well but you're entitled to your opinion thank you
What, no Simba in the gorge?
Vertigo effect? This sound be called the depersonalization effect
It's called like that because Vertigo was the movie that made it famous
When a person catches a panic attack depersonalization and derealization is usually accompanied. This here dolly zoom effect is what happens to most of us who get depersonalization/derealization after catching a panic attack or from smoking cannabis.
+Skin Care Discussions Thank God someone else knows about dp/dr
+seafoam Yeah bro. it's the most fucked up shit ever
People dont know what the fuck I go through lol, I started journaling about my past tho
The one from the diner scene in Goodfellas where Henry and Jimmy are talking actually makes me dizzy
Which movie is in 1:51
Poltergeist
T5 EP14 of Breaking Bad “Ozymandias” the best use for the effect
best movie oat
There's a scene in fantastic 4 where victor von doom loses his company and they do this on his face.
Wow, 2:58 actually made me want to hurl.
me too
?
Who remember this effect In Michael jacksonʼs Trailer clip?
Dolly in zoom out init.. great examples :)
What movie is that Ralph Fiennes movie
That's Quiz Show (1994)
What is that third movie?
The third movie is Poltergeist, highly recommended
Are you referring to the push/zoom effect utilised in the film 'Vertigo' or the effect of vertigo one gets from looking down off of a high platform?
The first clip is a rear projection shot anyhow.
Nice
isnt this also called CONTRAZOOM?
What was the last movie?
twas vertigo by hitchcock
Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock (hence the name the “Vertigo effect”).
Fellowship of the Ring???
What is the music used in this? I really like it.
The music is by Philip Glass from the film Koyaanisqatsi
Excellent, thank you!
What's the name of the effect?
+Calmax Film It's called a dolly zoom.
+DryRoastedLemon contra zoom
Song name. Anyone ?
It's Microchip from the Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack and another track from that soundtrack, just called Translation and Credits
whats the name of the song? when i look for philip glass and koyaanisqatsi there come up multiple songs and none of them sounds like this song. could you tell me? :x
ill put a link to the songs in the description
MrHopeTelevision thanks a lot man :)
It's the last sequence of the last song. Don't think you can find it in the OST version but in the movie, when the rocket is falling and falling and falling...
aint this also called the zolly shot?
Yes. Dolly zoom, actually.
nice
That made me dizzy.
Its called a rack. Special type of shot.
Actually there does not seem to be 1 official term, I've seen "dolly zoom", or the longer "trucking forward, zooming out" (or, in reverse: "trucking backwards, zooming in"), "Vertigo-shot", and so on :P.
The 1st Was psycho
DOLLY ZOOM
Came here after listening to om cream podcast 😂😅😅
I believe The Simpsons even did it once.
+Terry Asheim thats right - in one of the early episodes - I was going to put it in, alas the video i had didn't pass muster
Top
pheasant
"pheasant"?
They used this effect in Joe Dirt. /watch?v=YSRIcDQvTyI @ 0:44 - 0:59
this video could have been less than a minute long
Make it then .. Mine is longer
My head is turning and wanted to throw up while watching video. Fuck vertigo.
1:06 -1:36
This title is misleading as hell. These are movie clips, not actual briefs bouts of vertigo one might suffer once in awhile from working out or running outside in the heat, on a near empty stomach regardless of the distance. Other than that awesome upload!
This kind of shot was popularized in the Hitchcock movie "Vertigo", the last one shown in the clip. So the effect is sometimes named after it.
