  • / loisdavidsonart www.etsy.com/u... Today's demo is for semi-abstract Snowdrops using only 2 colours, masking out the snowdrops first with masking fluid and then using the wet in wet technique to create a lovely background for the snowdrops, an unpredictable and very exciting method of painting loose flowers. Why not give it a try, and use any colours you like, I used Cotman ultramarine blue and Gamboge Hhue tube paints to mix my greens and shadow colour for the flowers.
I used various brushes that I found online, but use any brushes you are comfortable with. My board is at an angle of about 45 degrees tilt.
My paper is 100% cotton Saunders Waterford, cold pressed, 11" x 15"/28cm x 38cm. Thanks for watching, and happy painting!

I love the way you explain the process and why you make the choices you don’t, such as adding color little by little so it does not look heavy. Beautiful painting!

Truly STUNNING, Lois. I can't remember your ever achieving so much depth in the background and so much of a three-dimensional quality in the elements of the foreground (i.e., the flowers). In addition, the play of light is wonderful THROUGHOUT this watercolor. Congratulations! Best, Chris

Love this painting. I miss Spring in the UK so much. This time of year is very harsh, in Alberta. No pretty snowdrops coming through here. Looking forward to painting this. Thank you, Lois.

No snowdrops yet here in northern New England, but I’m encouraged that spring is not far while watching your tutorial. You make this seem so doable, so I plan to try it soon. Thank you for sharing your skill and talent!

Love your tutorials and finished pieces. I would love it if you placed a white mount around your work or placed it over a white sheet of paper...I always find the rather messy paint board rather distracts from your artwork!

Thanks for you feedback, I’m glad you like my demos, however, placing a mat around my finished painting isn’t something I do, I love my messy board! 🎨🎨🎨

Also, I love this painting. It definitely evokes feelings of spring. I'm going to have to try it out. I like the simplicity of 2 paints making a painting I would have never described as 'limited pallette.'

That's a treat for the eyes.
I may have added a few large salt crystals in the darks, just to make it feel cold and frosty. But that's just me. Such sweet and humble flowers, but year after year, they have a way of warming my heart. Winter's end is approaching. Forced out by a determined spring. And that's when our little green produces a display to celebrate newness of life. Flowers by the billion, heart melting fawn, tits in their finest plumage and so on.
I'm off again, into my romantic dream world. Lol
    Wonderful Lois, and thank you.
