Scotty what do you think about isuzu?
Hey Scotty can you pop start that car in emergency situation since the IMA sits between the trans and motor would that make it impossible or would it work the same as a normal cat
Thanks a lot.
Loving it
Hey Scotty just purchased a Kia telluride and now looking at 3rd row options for my own vehicle. Looking between journey, outlander.
@@nakamahaki650 The car also has A regular starter motor that is powered by the 12 volt battery if the IMA is having A problem or turned off.
That was very Insight-ful.
Thank you.
Ba-dum-tss!
Hahaha
Daym, this is a well done video. Good editing. I had completely forgotten about the Honda Insight when it comes to hybrid vehicles. Good little daily driver.
Car and driver did a review on this car back in the day which generation is it now is Honda still making any info would be helpful thanks!😁😁😁😁
I’ll be buying a 2020 Honda Insight EX Hybrid this summer...can’t wait!
I agree. Well done video, but did anyone understand what he said was his older car? Lol
I'm driving a 2001 Insight stick shift. This guy is modest. The Insight is a great car. I average about 64 - 65 MPG easily. Fun to drive. Thanks for the posting about his car.
Got a 2020 Insight ex. Love it. Stop and go traffic on my 24 mile commute in Los Angeles give me insane gas mileage. Round trip average (close to 50 miles) is over 65 mpg with careful driving. My record for commute home (24 miles, somewhat slight downhill, in traffic) is 86.4 MPG ! I've twice gotten close to that, so it's not an aberration. Owned for 3 weeks.
Thats a pretty bada55 car. 60 mpg too. I always hated the design when I was younger but many years later looks almost dont matter to me and this car really stands out.
So true
Been driving Honda Insights since 2001 and love them! When I switched to Amsoil synthetic oil I got over 70 mpg down in the Florida Keys! Really fun to drive and I rarely use the clutch.
Scotty's new intro recording is of his Celica 😂
And the best thing about the first-gen Insight
It had a manual transmission
Once correction: The first generation Insight does in fact have a conventional starter as a backup to the hybrid system. During very cold temperatures the car will automatically switch to the conventional starter system to start the car.
There should be a, "MPG Club." Where everything is about getting the most MPG.
The web sites are called cleanmpg and ecomodder
There is. People take those insights and geo metros and things like that and see who can get the best mpg. The winner last year had a geo metro that got 165 mpg
Insight central has a thread dedicated to this and many get way over 60mpg as in easily 100 plus mpg. My best has been 92mpg. 60mpg in th city. Hot weather makes mpg go way up.
I hope the owner reads these comments too. Man those cars are really rare here in Canada. I did a nationwide search on autotrader and couldn't find a single one! I remember being so fascinated by this car when it first came out.
Nice shirt and great review. You have a talent there kid
I love Hondas, your car seems really fun and easy on the paycheck. I have a 99 Honda Civic LX with 306,000 miles and drives great these cars are so good!
Plz tell me it’s manual coupe
Timothy Church ⛪ has
That 3 cylinder engine sounds pretty cool when being revved. Much different tone than a normal 4 cylinder
That video has got me thinking about the Insight.
Steering wheel and Dash layout straight out of a honda s2000 lmao !!! you learn something new every day
the dash is diffrent
@@benjaminbuljevic7977 thanks for pointing that out, I meant to say cluster.
@@1_chilled_guy595 the cluster is different too
@@benjaminbuljevic7977 ofcourse its a little different , its a hybrid and does not have that masterpiece F20c under the hood. Jeez!!
@@1_chilled_guy595 dont jeez me for your inaccuracies
I have had a 2003 Insight for 6 years and cost me £3,000, they are now selling on eBay for £8,500. I have rebuilt the hybrid battery and changed the gearbox bushes. For an 18 year old car it has now come into its own. Still a lot more advanced than most cars still on the road today. It turns so many heads and I get so many questions. Oh, no road tax and I am getting 80.4mpg UK around London!!
4:29 thats why scotty chose this video
I own a 2000 Honda insight....I get a lot of looks and questions about it...it's a manual..theft proof too
Ok but why do you look peter parkers boss
I drive a 07 Yaris hatchback...love the tiny size and fun factor like the Insight.
Just wish Honda still produced 3 cylinder Hybrids.
90’s cars in general were smaller, lighter and not over-styled like cars of today
I just saw this car in person for the first time ever two days ago!!! The person pulled out from a huge mansion lol
The One Minds haha guess that’s how they saved up for their mansion by being cheap on gas lol 😂
That’s how you get rich by not dumping cash into liabilities lol.
Yeah lol that’s the life lesson I was being served right then and there
The One Minds gardener or cleaning lady perhaps?
Mine saves me about $200/mo from my other car. Payed for itself a few times over.
Had a 91 geo metro xfi. Got 54 highway. 5 speed 3 cylinders. I saw an insight like his driving down the PA turnpike. Always going well over the speed limit. Never understood that. Thank you good video.
Had a 89. Then a 93 convertable. Loved them. 50 mpg, minimal maintenance, minimal electronics to fail
Great explanation Oscar, thanks for sharing.
The guy has a really good voice!
Remember the first crx ?? it did from 50 to 70 mpg in the 80's
Sintetic - Suzuki Cervo for me
i own a toyota prius, but i have HUGE respect for this honda insight and the brand new one.
Commander Shepperd I am a diehard Toyota fan but if I was in the market for a hydrid , I would go for the NEW insight honda is making up for the past few BS insights they made... and having a manual we should be praising Honda for that in a hybrid
@@JDMHaze you cant go wrong with either. The honda, i think its beautiful. Just plain gorgeous. The reason why i ended up going for the Toyota is because of their known reliability. i talked to a lot of people with these and they are passed 300,000 miles and no issues. ebay is full of people selling toyota batteries at very cheap because they are just so many prius all over. But honda has a 10/10 in design exterior and interior.
Hey Prius owner could you please stop driving below the speed limit. Thanks. Pass it along.
@@JDMHaze I would go for corolla hybrid.
@@wannabecarguy its called hypermiling !!!! i guess
Yeeeesssss, finally!!! Thank you Scotty very much for featuring someone with a 2000-2006 Honda Insight in this episode. These cars are underdogs when it comes to affordable quality, reliability and most importantly, gas mileage. I also have a silver 2001 manual Insight and was about to send you a clip of mine for people to get some 'insight' about these little monsters. Thanks again.
How many batteries have u gone thru?
@@mab1ism It's on its second one which is dead but I bypassed it at this point.
@@contagiousingenuityagency5273 how do u bypass it?
@@mab1ism Do you have one too? Insight Central (forum) has plenty of info on this topic but essentially you pull a few connectors out from the BMS (battery monitoring system) and switch the main hybrid battery rocker 'off'.
@@contagiousingenuityagency5273 yea I have one it's at 103k I'm just not sure how long it'll last.
Honda did not cut corners for build cost in the G1 Insight, the standard of engineering of these cars was so high engines are good for extreme mileages, 250,000 miles, 500,000 miles, even a car which achieved 700,000 miles until lost to an accident
No wonder Scotty chose your video, it was so well executed. nicely done.
Ford sold an Escort model in 1980s that was advertised 70mpg, and actually tested at 73mpg by Road and Track testers.
When I worked at Honda we had Insights towed in every. Single. Day. Nothing but hybrid battery and transmission failures.
I only worked there for 6 months. It was impossible to get good surveys from those customers.
Although this guy's car looks like it's set up right.
????. I have a G1 Insight owned 2004, I know several owners and subscribe to a major Insight forum, the cars are very reliable, perhaps you were dealing with the early recall in the USA, Honda removed the traction battery and replaced it with a new unit with an extra 20% of capacity
I just got a 2002. N calculated 60 mpg on the 2nd fill up. Cool little car just needs better/more cup holders.
This guy should have his own channel .. so well narrated ...
my 05 Prius has 65mpg mixed highway/city usage. even at 275,000 miles. Original batteries.
@James Carroll that's exactly how it feels. I just use it for Uber and long trips and drive the 94 Caprice for the other times.
Hands down, this is my favorite Show Off Sunday video! I especially loved him getting in his trunk like Scotty, lol.
Insight is cool always will be with mpg like that
More money in the bank or to have fun!
i always wanted a crx back in highschool.
Back in the late 90’s when I was younger and the car first came out, I remember seeing them and thinking who the hell cares about mpg.
Now older and wiser, hearing about their 60+ Mpg capability is astonishing. I get happy if I’m able to even get above 26 mpg.
Fascinating car, amazing how it gets better milage than a Prius
Prius is bigger thoo?
Has a smaller engine and smaller range than the Prius. The batteries in the car also last less than the Prius 🤔🤷🏻♂️
Looks cooler tho
has a manual with better aerodynamics and 1000ibs lighter lol Prius is like 31 to 3300 pounds
@@itspapaj4732 The Insight has zero electrical "range", that's not how it works. The electric motor assists the gasoline engine, not the other way around.
YEAH BABY!!!
I own one just like it!!! Same year, Same Color !!!
315 000 clicks and the little 3 cylinder engine is still kickin' !!! ;-)))
Is it the same battery?
@@mab1ism
2nd one and overdue for a third! lol
@@droidcrasher how do u know its going out?
When did u have to get your second battery?
@@mab1ism I bought the car used, on its 2nd battery. How do I know it's overdue? Cause it tells me the battery is full and when I accelerate, it bucks and jerks and finally the counter goes down. Finally the IMA sign lights up and BCM disengages the electric motor, I only have gas till I reboot the computer . (Disconnect the 12v battry for 10 seconds! lol I have installed a swith for good measure!) ;-)))
Cool car and good review
My first one was a 2003 and I drove it over 200,000 miles. I sold it and found a low mileage 2006. A typical reliable Honda product! I routinely get 70 MPG on the freeway. Both of mine have manual transmissions as they can get much better mileage than the CVT.
CVT has always better gas mileage precisely on newer cars because they are bigger and made of steel unlike the older insigt that was made using aluminium
@@carholic-sz3qv, I like the manual transmission because I can coast down long hills (provided the battery is fully charged) while the engine is idling. Also a manual transmission has less parasitic losses and much better longevity. It's true that most persons prefer a CVT.
1878 lbs!!!? Hot damn that's light 😱
I’ve seen some of these modified go 200mph. With more power combined with the light weight and aerodynamics they are good high speed runners.
Love how he climbed in to the trunk, Haha
Awesome presentation young man! It’s done on a professional level. Wow
This is a frugal Russian’s dream car. Forget the Lada stereotype. Once you have been through the Cold War nothing gets you going quite like saving 30mpg
I've got a 2004 honda accord in the uk great car
I test drove a 2019 Accord last week, it was a nice ride but like I told the salesman I am looking for a small car to drive in town so I passed.
@@thefreestylefrEaK that's what I've got k24 motor in mine
The head has a letter stamped by each cylinder. So when you order the $20 spark plugs you get the correct letter for each cylinder. Why? When the spark plugs are installed, each spark plug electrode is oriented away from the intake valves. Honda did everything they could for fuel economy.
Awesome! I just bought one
1999! Honda Insight hybrid
2019 Scotty: great hybrid car on the market folks!!
Great work Oscar ,and a great car you have ,one of the last quality build in Japan.
Thank you Scotty
Thank you, have NEVER seen this car before.
Love your vids Scotty!
Good job!
8th Gen Civics are the go-to economy Honda Cars where I live. Once everyone’s starting to convert to electric cars. I think the 8th Gen Civic is going to be one of the last naturally aspirated cars to go. Yes I have one and 160,000 miles later I’m still doing 30-40 mpg,
Did this guy actually have the nerve to actually say “Corvette” in this video? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
V-tak kickin yo!
These videos need another category: the biggest gun you can stick in the glove compartment.
My 2017 Chevy Sonic has a small top glove compartment that will accommodate an emergency smartphone and a Ruger LC9 9mm pocket pistol. My '99 Saturn SL1 had a larger glove box that could fit a Glock 36 Slimline in .45 ACP or a 2.5" Charter Arms Bulldog double action revolver in .44 Special. A friend has a 1950 Hudson (if I remember right) that had an immense glove box that you could nearly stick your arm all the way in.
Yeah show off sundayyyyyyy.
The HF Crx is amazing
Cool car. I just bought a 2010 Insight and loving it😁
2:33 sounds like a real lawnmower
I love Hondas and how they integrate the hybrid system on this car. Even WITHOUT a turbo from factory
Love for the Insight will never die!
Thanks for the video. I too own a Honda hybrid, it's a 2011 CR-Z Kool how much these cars have in common,
Same freelance designer for more vehicles than people realize. He is retired now with A few more designs still on the way.
I swear you said this car was junk in a different video
Yeah he did I think it was the one about buying used hybrid cars or something but I dont remember.
Sounds good Oscar, I’ve never owned a hybrid and this video is excellent info on this Honda. Now, Scotty... here in Utah, the state government is proposing a $0.15 tax per mile driven on hybrid/electric vehicles to make up for loss revenue on fuel taxes. WTH next?
61 mpg sounds very lovely
Rev up your Honda insights
I still see some on the road
What a cool car! I wish I hadn't sold my 2008 Honda Fit
Craig Nehring yes the Honda fit is a pure jewel and such a underrated car I mean the versatility and utility that thing offers is undefeated
Keye T They need to bring a hybrid version to the US.
Christopher A. Yes and the performance version, I know overseas they have a Fit RS ... which isn't there equivalent to a civic SI in the sense it's the uppest you can go
@@JDMHaze if I kept the revs over 4K that Fit was a totally different car. I had put 4 winter specific tires on to 14" rims and that car was super fun and fast in any weather. The stock 15" sport tires were okay for summer but sucked in the rain... Snow with the sport rims and tires? Forget it, white knuckle time
Craig Nehring I love the fit, it's a great SUV alternative, and probably has more space than these new BS compact SUVs do
😀 Remember the Honda CRX HF & Geo Metro XFI 😇🌻
I have a Geo Chevy Metro , but it has the real Makers name, it's called Suzuki Swift. I should do a video of my Swift along With my 4 Gen 1 Honda Insights . Right now I'm driving my gas Guzzling Civic Hybrid 5spd only 42MPG! It's same as Driving my Swift at 42MPG also! Lol
I have its descendant, the 2015 CR-Z, 2600 lbs and only gets 43mpg with CVT. Reliable, fun, sporty.
Good video. I am a fan of Honda, but never found this Insight particularly attractive (unlike the CRZ) but I always admired it from an engineering point of view. This guys car looks in good condition for its age.
Honda hybrids are fun to drive. They always give you the paddles for the automatics too which are very fun to use
Great Car ! I drive an 95 3/5 Metro . Almost the same specs on the 3 cylinder gas engine. Love it.
Love you so much already Scotty. The intro is so cool
What a pleasant review of the Gen 1 Insight 😀
Ahh yes, the Honda Insight.I honestly love the weird design.
Very very good review. Are these batteries as inexpensive and easy to repair as a Prius?
Scotty is the man!!
Iconic car. Priced are about to skyrocket 😊
Had a family friend who had one of these used to be fascinated by it great little car
Thanks for a great video. Honda made great cars.
This is the second video of yours that I've watched consecutively that were preceded by commercials for O'Reilly Auto Parts. I thought the first one was a funny coincidence, but after two in a row? lol
Great video. Well done.
Niccccce. Thanks for the insight.
Used to see some of the 2nd gen Insights roaming around the town back in the day, imported from Japan. Felt like a weird mix of 8th gen Civic and 2nd gen Fit, but hey, a hybrid so saved a chunk on the gas.
I still have my 2001 Toyota echo, my bad gave it to me many years back. He got it new. The echo gets great mileage to.
Manufacturer builds a 50-60+ mpg vehicle, big oil says "cut it out", next generation says "class leading 35 mpg!". Honda, GM, Geo, VW, and several others have released 50+ mpg vehicles and the complaints from big oil companies forced them to drop the next generation back down to 30-35 mpg. This is one reason why manual transmissions have gone by the way side for the most part, they were getting much better gas mileage so companies cut production of them. The other part is companies make a whole lot more money selling you a $3000 automatic transmission every 100-150K miles than they do a $300 part (throw out bearing/clutch plate) in a manual every 150-200K miles. In the US, as of 2016 only 2% of consumer vehicles came with a manual transmission.
2003 Civic Type-s 2.0, done 44 mpg on the highway. I was one proud owner 😁
"Give it the beans", now that made me fall off my chair laughing.
Honda City Diesel gives you 26.8 km per liter or ~70 miles per gallon!!
BHARATH B I’ve seen them in Mexico. Those are nice cars
26.8 km/lt to US MPG 26.8 x 3.785=101.438 1MILE=1.609 KM SO 101.438 KM/1.609=63 mpg
diesel is really nice when youre on the highway cruising and not really good in town just like normal gasoline cars and finally hybrid cars combine and makes the best mileage in town
He actually underestimated the mpg. That’s more like city stop and go. On the highway in traffic I pull 70. No stops and goes and on a good day I can pull up to 90 but never less than 70 plus. 75mph I was getting 78 for three tankfuls coming back from Cali headed to Chicago.
I'm loving these Insight videos!!
I love Honda.
Neet little car. I've seen them but never gave them a second thought.
Good video
i had the 1st version of the CRX Si. On a turnpike trip from Miami to Orlando, I actually thought the fuel gauge had stopped working when it was still above 1/2 a tank. A tank refill proved the gauge was right and I got 52 MPG on the trip.
Nice well loved collectable / daily driver.
I drove one of these once, and I thought the manual transmission mated to a hybrid was soooo coool. I was tempted to buy it.
Fun little car, in particular if you do a lot of city miles.
Geeeez, now I kinda want one. Makes it sound like hybrid tech's only gone backwards from there.
