Thanks a bunch for sharing this! In my 2002 model, the "Security Unit" also had to be removed, as it was in the way of the screws at 5:22

Oh, and two more screws holding in the stereo bracket that were behind the ashtray assembly!

@@BlueHoundDog I just bought a 2002 legacy outback wagon and am having a grounding issue somewhere. Radio works but has a little fuzziness to it, when I tried to use a cassette to aux adapter no sound and made a steady high hissing static sound until I stopped cassette. I then bought a KM18 Nulaxy Bluetooth Car FM Transmitter and it works but still gets a bad hissing fuzzy hissing noise in the background. It also reacts to my hand moving closer to it. If I get my hand close to the device it gets loud then if I touch it it gets very quiet making me think its a grounding issue somewhere as that thing is plugged into the cigarette lighter for power. Any thoughts or ideas? Would putting more grounds from my negative battery terminal to other parts of the car to help ground it help this issue or do you think it may be a loose wire somewhere in the stereo perhaps?
      Thanks!

@@lightwarriors7778Cassette to aux adapters are notoriously iffy, I had issues with at least two before giving up on those. I ended up soldering the leads of an aux cord directly to the audio signal source of the cassette player. Definitely a pain to get the thing disassembled though, not the kind of project I would take on again. There is also a plug on the back of the stereo unit to connect an optional CD changer from the trunk. The pinout can be found online, but I guessed that some sort of digital communication has to be mimicked to get the stereo to listen so I didn't go this route.
To reduce electrical noise from your FM Transmitter, add a "ferrite bead" to the power cable. Hope this helps!

@@BlueHoundDog Thanks for the response. Yea I think out of all of those things you just mentioned the ferrite bead route may be the best though I've already spent $17 on the km18 fm transmitter itself and not sure if those ferrite beads are wide enough to fit around the cable as it's a snake like flex metall wrapped kinda cable that you can bend and mould how you want.

How did you remove the security unit?

The stereo trim with the cup holder was for the '01 & '02 Outbacks. I did try to fit it on my '04 LL Bean, no go. at first the Motorola Phone Module, shown in the video, mounted to the top of the stereo, which is for the On Star, was preventing the cup holder from fitting, but even after I removed this I could get the trim to fit, but it was such a tight squeeze that the cup holder would not open. So I reinstalled the phone module and the old trim. ☹️

Thank you this video was very helpful. The only thing I added was I took the two screws off above my instrument cluster to give me more room on the top.

Factory CD won't work, so.. reset it and hope... or find a Din-2 upgrade.
    Either way, appreciate the deconstruction.

I got the stereo trim that has the cup holder for my 2004 ll bean outback, but it will not fit due to the box above the stereo, what is called the phone module in this video. Is it ok for me to remove this module? Will this mess anything up?

This video was very helpful. My car is a 2001. Is it the same as the 2003? If it's slightly different, that's fine but if it's a major difference, where can I find a video of the 2001 outback? Thank you!
