The only breed my wife and I ever have is Doberman's. We've had both male and female. Usually our males were super calm and relaxed. Whereas, with our females, they were usually more needy and clingy. Currently we have Abby a red dobie female. And she is very needy per se. She constantly wants to play. I should note Abby will be 2 yrs old in June (2020). So she still has that puppy in her. However, did have Abby, professionally trained. So she's just great to be around. She's well behaved and listens. That being said, my wife and I do spoil her beyond belief. I would say Abby, is more attached to me. But that's because I take everywhere with me. The other day I had to go to the hardware store for some lumber and fencing. I asked Abby is she wanted to come along. Of course she got super excited....she loves car rides. My wife won't take Abby out, unless it's to the Vet. I enjoy providing "enrichment" for Abby. And maybe we spoil her so much, because our kids are older now and just finished college. The kids are out on their own. We do have a stray kitten we found on our property and took it in. Now Abby gets along quite well with Otis the Cat. Both animals have 207 acres to explore. But we don't let them just go off. Abby has a large fenced area. Why I needed the fence and lumber...going to extend Abby's yard so it's roughly a full acre for her but still attached to the house. Abby is an inside and outside dog...simply what she wants. Except at bed time. Abby is inside sleeping on the bed with us...of course.

Glad I found this. I'm on the 4th dobe. I have a female still with me. But have had 2 other males. One lived to 13, last one to only 8 (bladder cancer in March of this year). Got a male who is 11 months old now. First show dog and trying to get as much info to help him be his best since he is going to be in such a different atmosphere than my other boys. I prefer my males. My husband and female dobe are connected at hip. I think you explaining this difference in male vs female has me understanding now. I love them being Velcro dogs, I love them being athletes. But the female and I never bonded like I did with any of my males. I'm guessing now that part of that was just because of the differences between sexes and my time put into the training one on one with the males. I do know that losing each of my males cost me emotionally in a way I have never experienced before. Most painful loss that I am still going through from my loss in March. I have 3 female dogs and decided that I only wanted one male. I will always have a doberman but if I am going to have a male dog it will always be a doberman. No other breed has brought me the love and devotion of this breed. I am a mobile groomer and have been snubbed by community because I have gone the show route. I simply don't care. They have not experienced what I have. I have 2 rescues and will always do my part there. But to have a well bred dobe..... nothing in the world touches this. Sorry this was long. But it was so heartfelt.

My 6 year old doberbaby often reverts to puppy like behaviour. Especially after a brisk run, we go jogging or on the bike for 100-150 minutes daily depending on the weather. Even in the rain or snow we'll still do an hour.
I want to believe it's the vigorous exercise, cold temps & the effect of coming into a very warm home. He'll get the zoomies for 5 minutes then be nipping, chewing my hands and arms. He goes from being a docile lap dog to a literal land shark.

  • @bc7319

Correct on differences! But, realizing they have their own personalities in spite of their gender sometimes. Louie is a fawn (Isabella) Doberman so only 6% of the breed. He is different in a lot of ways. We got him so early at 8 weeks and started socializing him right away. Now, at 15 months old he is very very lovable. He is well trained but unusually gentle. Definitely a 100 on the Goofy scale, though. However, here is an example of his unique personality: He will play as hard as he can with any dog that wants to play. But, yesterday at the dog park, he started playing with a basset hound puppy and was very protective and gentle. Lots of licking, lots of laying down and letting her play with his ears. He is sensitive enough to hone in on the other dogs level. He is the same way with kids at different ages. And, he anticipates my mood very well and adjusts to it. But, then that maybe normal. Other Doberman males I have known seem to be more aggressive or impatient. He does go into an intense protective mode if he is not introduced by me, but I can get him to back down or be more alert very easily. As a pup, the breeder did not even want to let him go either because of his personality: a little lovable, pudgy burrito. Now, he is weighing in at 95 lbs so that can be problem when he sits on your face on the couch. In his mind, he is still a lap sized burrito puppy. GOOFBALL!!!!

All but one lived around 10/11 yrs with one dying of some form of crappy breast cancer for lack of better term that came fast and out of nowhere and took her quick upon its onset. I've had 2 females and 2 males. My current Doberman is a male. First off, the whole breed is amazing, very willing to please, intelligent, driven, capable and attentive. Both sexes are highly trainable. The males work better for me. Like she said, they don't ask questions, they just go go go. There is nothing they can't learn. I like the higher drive of the males. Their protection instincts are centered around the person, the handler. Females seem more apt to protect the zone, your whole house. I also agree that protection training isn't really a priority. They are naturally intimidating and protective without turning that up. You can see some of the very many skills the Doberman can achieve on my GreatDogs channel. Cheers!

I have a male 7 m/o European Doberman who is 75 lbs and growing. Originally, I wanted a red female (it would also be my first dog) but all the breeders we've talked to recommended a male because (according to them) males bond better with their owners and they are not drama queens, like the females. Our good boy is a great. He gets along with everyone in the family, including our cat. He is also very goofy and wants to play tug a lot. I am the only one who is training him and spend the most time with him, so he tends to listen to me more than other people in the household. He is also becoming territorial and barks at animals and people outside our house, but he never barks at anyone when we are out on walks. He is also very smart and easy to train. We are pretty much down with obedience training and currently doing Schutzhund.

Great video. I got my female Doberman at 8 weeks old back in 2014. I will say you are 100% correct about her focus on performing a job. When outside she immediately goes on Airplane patrol and protects our house from all the invading planes landing at our local airport. There is absolutely no ball throwing or playing that will take her eyes from the sky for 1 second, but on walks or at the park she does not do this and just wants to explore. I will also say she loves and interacts with my wife, son and I all equally. She loves to lick, swim and challenge authority. She has also not slowed down 1 bit and is basically a forever puppy. I doubt I will ever own another Doberman again. Despite how much we love ours as I get older I can't see myself being able to dedicate the HOURS EVERY DAY these dogs need in order to be happy and at peace.

My female now spends time with everyone in the family. She is more stoic, moody, more in tune with my emotions. I love them both, my favorite dog breed. 🖤

Recently lost my 9 year old GSD Zeke to cancer. He was a rescue, our third Shepherd. Took all three through advanced obedience and one through early stages of service (distraction) training. Looking to move to a short haired dog that's still very trainable, a good protector, and a good family dog. Wondering how you would compare the breeds, how similar, how different, what are best print and online resources to learn from?

Have outlived 6 Dobermans so far....3 female, and 3 male....Three from Puppies, and 3 adopted as adults. #1 Doberman was in 1957. #6 (male) passed in 2018. ALL were wonderful friends! Wondering IF I might be able to outlive #7? Maybe "that should be the goal"? I miss them all!

I’m still so conflicted. I have a male dog (very submissive/insecure) and I’m looking to get a Dobermann for service work. I think a female would be better for my household, but I’m worried about her being uncomfortable around strangers because she will be with me in public all the time. What do you think?

Great video! I have a male doberman who is 19 months old and this is pretty spot on, although I think you were off a bit on the sizing for males, at least by akc standards. They should be 26 to 28 inches at the withers, with 27.5 considered ideal. The tall skinny ones you often see are not correctly bred. Everything else is spot on, my boy is goofy and clumsy, and he is pretty high energy. He needs quite a bit of exercise and mental stimulation. He is very territorial and if I ever got another dog, it would be a female because he's never met a female he doesn't like. He has occasionally had issues with other males, but it's typically because they try to dominate him and he won't have it! Lol. He is super gentle with my kids and is a great family dog. I really couldn't ask for a better dog. Thanks again for the great video!

We broght a 10 month old Male Doberman thats not fixed into our home with 3 bullies that are not fixed. They ALL get along fine. He did challenge one of the bullies for the alpha spot when he first met them but now they all act like they been together since birth. You can bring in an older male Doberman into a home with other male dogs if your a responsible owner and have control over your pack. We currently have a pack of 6 and everyone respects everyone else because we provide the structure and safety for them.

Now unfortunately they have both passed away ;and we are thinking of getting another and not sure if male or female would be best. The issue we had with the male is he was very protective and he did not like children. The female I felt comfortable around all dogs, people , kids etc. What is your suggestion?

I love my male because he wants lots of love but is so calm and well balanced that he is totally calm and non aggressive with people or dogs outside the house like dog parks or unknown neighbors. But at a dog park: a very nervous/ high energy/crazy german shepherd female who kept picking up her ball and walking around, dropping it,them hysterically barking at it had come up to my med german pincher (med doberman 30lbs female) and my med pincher showed a tiny bit of fang, gtowled a tiny bit,and began backing up to me who is on a few steps behind her. Shepherd barked and took one step closer and our full doberman male jumped up and over BOTH of us (me and med dog), got between us,put his front paws out, head down, butt up,and gave 3 loud, warning barks to the crazy dog. You coule see the dog thinking and as it went to move forward and challenge my dog back, you could see my dog looking at her neck and getting ready to grab her and pin her! Me and my husband grabbed the harness on him and i grabbed my med dog now between my legs...and FINALLY the "too busy on my phone for life" man bun hippy owner gets up and finally with as little effort as possible, tell his dog to stop which she was so nervous and confused she was looking all around instead of at him! And my dobermans (med and large) go to the door if knock or ring and bark/guard it until i tell them to sit and stay. Without that command: they will bite ANYONE who comes in. My med one sleeps on my bed and someone was in our neighbors bkyrd who had never been there before, and my med one was trying to jump on the window sill and barking in case anyone tried to come in! It was so funny because she is so hefty from her breeding but she was fully capable of doing it with her tiny feet/legs to fit on it!

Then their second pair were two males, with one (Rommel) growing up with me until he passed when I was in my late teens. My wife and I currently are on German Shepard’s number 2&3 both rescues👍🏻. But she already knows a Doberman is coming into our lives next. The best dogs ever created.

Had a male (Jax), then we wanted him to have a companion (wife), so we got Jacky. Jax got stollen, he was almost 2, its been 3 months since he’s been gone. Jaky would be needing a companion now, so we got another female (Yatti), she is 8 weeks old, smartest dobbie weve had yet, she it at 8 commands. In other words we found out females ARE SMARTER and are more protective of their home, in our experience with this wonderful breed.

Just because your Doberman “seems” aggressive and protective, that doesn’t mean they’re going to protect you when the time comes because most dogs are all bark and no bite. I’ve seen videos of people testing their Dobermans in a home invasion scenario and their Dobermans were all bark and no bite because they had no protection training. If you want your Doberman to protect you when the time comes, you need to get them into protection training or else you’ll find out the hard way that your Doberman is just all bark and no bite when the time comes.

Great share!!! My wife and I would like to own two Dobermans acquiring both as puppies from the same breeder one year apart in age. Would a female and female combination work? Our home consists of a married couple, no kids, and no other pets. We are avid outdoor enthusiasts. We day hike, we backpack and camp, we mountain bike, and we canoe camp quite regularly. Females bond to one owner. I would expect and want that to be my wife for the added protection. That said, will the female ever hang with me in the house or always hang with my wife? Will the female run with me and offer protection for me if I am out and about without my wife? If someone came into our campsite (our space) uninvited, will the female protect both of us since we are all in the same space? We have two buildings at home that are used regularly. If my wife is in one building and I am in the other building, will the female be content to hang with me or will she go nuts until she is reunited with my wife in the other building? And, lastly, how does this all play out if we could and did have two females. Do they both bond to the same adult? Is that an issue thereby preventing two females? Many Thanks!

Anyway my new girl isn't quite 6 months and already nearly 60lbs so she's a bigger girl. The taping is taking a bit longer than I hoped also. Right now she's an everyone dog but I know that will change as she matures. She moreless goes where the kids go right now being that she's a kid but I do know how they stick with one person once they mature. She's still a bit standoffish with people. Her parents are both champions so she's had a good bloodline and was the showpuppy of the litter (I had 2nd choice) the breeder said but she's more brute like now than dainty. But I alwasy said I love the males size but females personality and kinda getting best of both worlds now.

One practical aspect that I have not seen mentioned is that females come in heat and that isn’t good for a house dog. The practical drawback with males is that when you let them out to do their business they pee on things you don’t want peed on! You can overcome both these issues fairly easily by blocking the males and putting a diaper on female while she is in heat or simply leaving her outside for the duration. That’s hard for the owner and the dog, but it is nevertheless something else to consider when choosing the sex of the puppy. We just got our third Doberman, a female, and we are really excited. Our first was a male. He was the best, smartest, and easiest to train dog I have ever had. I still miss him. He lived 10 years and 10 days. The next was a female. She was also a good one, but not like the first. She was stubborn and had a tendency to get too big for her britches if you let her sleep on the couch or up on the bed. She did what she wanted to do. She lived 10 years and 11 months. The male just lived to please me and did what I wanted him to do and he did it instantly as well. Both had their good points, and had it not been that we are planning on getting into breeding, we would have gotten a male.
