  • In this video I talk about the crazy prices we saw for original comic book art on the platinum heritage auction. Buyers were Hawk Tuah all over the original art. I do a bit of a market report and recap and also shine a spotlight on some of the questions I've started to see in the community - has original art pricing gotten out of hand? What do you guys think?
    Hope you guys enjoy the video!

    OA has *always* been crazy. But 30 years ago most of it was cheap. I remember passing on the OA of a wacky packages sticker for $450 in the late 1980s. That same one sold for $125,000 post 2008. Cover OA will always be insanely popular.

    I was wrong on my earlier comment. This page 13 art is the first panel where you see Kingpins face. You do see him from the back on page 10. My bad.

    Many of these OA pieces were from the fantastic late Roger Hill's Collection...top drawer items

    Have you made a video discussing the first appearance vs cameo vs prototype markets? Why are thins like Foom 2 and Hulk 180 SO much lower in value than Hulk 181

    Weathy people have been investing in fine art for a long time. It gives them an appreciating asset that they won't be taxed on. I'm sure most of the huge prices for comics and comic art are people buying for the same purpose. Also with more and more artists working digitally less OA is being produced which I feel like has driven even the new work higher.

    the only reason warren kremers art isnt as popular as others is bc so few collectors know of him,..but most of those killer lee elias covers were laid out by kremer, harvey's art director,...chamber of chills 21 is badass to me as well....
    cool video mickey w the staccato voice, are you a film noir fan? ha. i, too, was watching the hammer on some of those books and art pieces from that auction,...

    Some stunning art right there! I love my comics but I buy to read and for fun. The OA is where it's at, there's something magical about handling a genuine one-off piece of comics history. From a collector point of view, there's very little to worry about - no FOMO, no CGC shenanigans, fraud is almost impossible if you have a trained eye and know your stuff - it's all good.
    Would love to see you do more content on original art, there's some incredible, breathtaking work out there. I'd recommend you get in touch with Bill from Comic Art Fans and do some interviews on the channel.

    Your comments about Warren Kremer is interesting considering many people believe he did the preliminary art for Black Cat 50 and Chamber of Chills 23 for Lee Elias to finish. Warren Kremer was the art director at Harvey Comics at the time, and those covers are not typical of Lee Elias other work. Bob Overstreet credited Warren Kremer as the cover artist for those books.

    You’re right about OA being 1 of 1, even if it’s not a big piece, it’s still the only one. That’s really exciting to collectors. Please cover the market more in the future!

    Personally
    From all the people I have seen in my life that buy art for a high dollar price the only thing they find interesting about the art is the value of it not the actual art itself. It's very rare that I would come across somebody that actually enjoys the art for the art itself and the value of it never gets mentioned Or it's the last thing to be mentioned.
    Love art. But there are people paying MILLIONS for a All Blue painting and talk about how beautiful it is

    • @poing333
      @poing333 3 месяца назад +2

      I love telling people what I'd pay for shit. "Oh, that was 15k? Shit dude, I think you overpaid- I MIGHT have grabbed that for 2, wild."

    • @MattMatt77
      @MattMatt77 3 месяца назад +1

      @@poing333 Well with Art it's always like more money makes it nice. The hole NFTs was a perfect example of that. People were saying that it was a legit form of art and how beautiful it was but now that the value taint it's not seen like that. It's seen for what it actually is and How you actually see it as.
      I just find it to be very strange how art seems to have a different view to it if it's not worth all that much money.

    • @poing333
      @poing333 3 месяца назад +1

      @@MattMatt77 exactly that and you can actually expound that to other things like comics and cards- I see a lotta people that only collect expensive things and I'm like, yeah you have no love for this. Cuz if they did then they'd like things that aren't as expensive too, expensive stuff is just popular stuff for the most part. People should like unpopular things too if they really love something.

  • @MarcSpectorComics

    I highly doubt that chamber of chills original art clears a million dollars in today's market. That piece of OA sold during the boom when two rounds of stimulus checks had already been passed out not that it matters. As people receiving stimulus checks weren't the target audience to buy a six figure piece. If that piece sold today, it would probably clear over 500 though
