Told this story here before. Last year I went to our local Toyota dealership with the intent to buy two rav4s, one for my wife, one for me. They had a $4000 markup on these things and they would not budge from their inflated pricing. Literally walked across the street to the Subaru dealership (Subaru was my second choice) and they were happy to sell a Forester Touring and an Outback Limited under MSRP. Guess who got my business....

As a foot note I have been a mechanic for 40 plus years , after retirement , I delivered parts for Napa and if you think Toyotas don’t break down you need to go to a Toyota dealer and see how busy they are , the one i delivered to was huge and always busy , had engines with rusty frames stacked in a pile outside!

I've a 2006 Corolla and the temp gauge always ran a little below the middle line. I saw that it started to run a little above the middle line so I changed it and then it was back to status quo ante. When I did my first radiator on my first car (75 Eldorado) because it literally exploded on the interstate nobody told me to burp the system. I was on my way to Maine with not a cloud in the sky when all the sudden it seemed to start raining- turns out coolant was violently bubbling out of my overflow and onto my windshield! Luckilly I limped my way to the local Lappens and the guy there told me what to do. So from that day forward on the rare occasion it's sorta sunny but still raining I always ask the passenger if it's also raining on their side of the windshield!

I intend to keep this vehicle until I’m gone so it was a small price to pay for peace of mind.

To the first question, I live in the Chicago area just 5 minutes away from my house is a Toyota dealership. They wanted $41k out the door for a base model RAV4. We went to St Charles Toyota, about an hour away and we got a RAV4 for MSRP and in this market I can't even complain

I have a toyota matrix as well and sitting at 210k miles. Only problem i have had was ac condensor failed. Only gripe with it over 17 years is it doesnt have features like my newer cars have. No heated/cooled seats, no auto dimming mirrors, no automatic climate control, need to go full aftermarket audio just to get anything decent. Idk just a coupke things

I think rust is gonna take it in a couple years. Ive stopped doing anything but basic safety maintenance, shes lived her life well and treated us good for the 6 years weve had it. Couldnt have asked for more from a 1,000$ buy and fix when we were still students after all.

I would be worried buying any type of parts online, if you have money might as well pay more for a quality part and not worry if the part will last. The old saying, you try to save a few bucks, in the long run it will cost you more.

    I have a 2006 Rav4, 125k miles on it.
Two days ago it didn't start, the stick was loose and the problem was the gear shifter cable. It was easely replaced but for a moment I thought it was someting worst like a dead transmission.

SCOTTY, WHYYY???😭😭. I noticed you put the original rubber fittings back on instead of getting new ones. I had a 07 Matrix that needed a new radiator from the original one at around 220,xxx miles. I replaced it myself and had to end up doing it twice because of the rubber fittings. That wiggle you showed taking yours out, mine still did that with the new radiator and old rubber fittings. I was able to get the radiator replaced, but I got new rubber fittings, and when I installed it with the new fittings, there was no wiggle at all. Unfortunately, I don't have the car anymore, but it was a blast while I owned it 😁

Our Toyota dealers have no new cars either. I stopped by one of our dealerships and they had a Corolla cross for $26.2k and it said on the window that 8 available. And when I called and asked what the otd price would be and they said $33.+k and you would have to wait 90-120 days if lucky. So I bought a Mazda cx30 with heated seats and got it NOW and under invoice about $1400. And seems good so far and will be good in the winter. Frozen tundra
