AT: Carver's Gap to 19E

- A two night backpacking trip on the AT northbound from Carver's Gap, which is at the Tennessee/North Carolina state line near Roan Mountain, TN, to US Rt. 19E with my friend Tomas Cairl.

Love it! Glad to see Bird Dog Tom out with you! A couple different tarp setups for you. I love just sleeping with my tarp (and my hammock) because I love feeling the breeze come through. There is nothing like sleeping outside!
Thanks Travis! I've been using tarps since 1998. The Duomid I've been using for the last two years is the closest thing to a tent I've used since then. I got this tarp about a month ago from Hammock Gear. It's a 10X10 (actual dimensions are 9.5X9.5) silpoly tarp. To me the nice thing about a tarp is you not fully enclosed during rain and excluded from nature; you can see out.
Oh Bryan. This video literally put tears in my eyes. I recall maybe being 7 or 8 years old. Hiking from Carvers gap up to Big Grassy with my parents. Laying in the soft grass warm sun thinking the world was perfect. That was probably 1976 or 77. Great memories have been back there many times since. As usual another awesome video

That's one of my favorite sections. We did it in the winter time and encountered temps in the teens, wind, snow and rime ice everywhere! It made for a really memorable hike.
Several years ago my son and I did a one night out and back trip from Carver's Gap to Yellow Mountain Gap in winter. It wasn't all that cold, but there were still some snow drifts three feet deep.
Thank you for the wonderful video . I first hiked that area in 1971 , looks about the same , just more people. There was not much traffic on the AT back then. Thanks again for the blast from the past.
You're welcome! I bet there was a lot less people in 1971. The first time I did this section was in 2004.

My wife and I did that stretch ten years in a row as a one-day day-hike! We live nearby. We called it the "All Downhill Hike". That helped us trick friends into joining us... Beautiful hike.
It'd be a great day hike. We passed several people going both directions day hiking and trail running this section. We intentionally chose to make it a two night trip.
Great to see you out together and yes, some pretty high winds and cold weather, no wonder he wanted to get warmed up a little. Beautiful out there!

Ohh man what a treat as I'm sitting here eating dinner (a bowl of homemade venison chilli) and watching my good friend Tom and Bryan Delay on a hike on the AT. Very cool. Nice shots in there Bryan...some of that area looked like Big Sky Country down around Missoula. Beautiful. Tom is definitely great company and even better conversation. I hope we can all link up some summer and do a trip. As much as I would love to do a section of the AT it just seems like there are too many people. Think I will stick to my hard to get to never heard of lakes. LOL. Hike on!
Thanks hyoh-wu! A bowl of homemade venison chili sounds good. Never thought about it but parts of this hike do look like the area around Missoula. Yes Tom and I have had some great conversations. Probably why I didn't take more videos around camp. You never know maybe we can do a trip together some time. The number of people on the AT depends the section of the AT and the time of year. This section is very popular, especially the first mile or two with day hikers. Plus there were some thru hikers and it was spring break. Actually most of the places I've backpacked in the west are more crowded than the southern Appalachian's, especially the Winds and the Sawtooths.
@BryanDeLay I did the sawtooths a few years back ... well yes u are absolutely right. It was strange indeed to see so many people out. College kids hike during spring break? I thought they all went to Florida or something. lol.

One of my favorite areas. We did that hike and camped on Little Hump.
It is a very beautiful section of the AT.
So windy, hard to believe the stakes held the tarp in place. I was half expecting to see you cowboy camping!
It helps to use 10 stakes!

Question: Did you notice if they'd torn down the old barn/shelter near yellow mountain gap?

Thanks Ken! We didn't hiked down to it, but from the AT you could see the old red barn was not there and it was just a patch of green grass.

Do you still ise the trailstar?
No, for the last two years I've been using an MLD Duomid. Although recently I bought a Hammock Gear silpoly 10' X 10' flat tarp and a Hammock Gear 11' X 9.25' silpoly hammock tarp. I'll continue to use the Duomid in winter and use the two tarps in warmer weather, using the flat tarp in dry weather or light rain and using the hammock tarp with doors when heavy rain is forecast.

My DCF Trail Star wore out after 249 nights. The fabric was delaminating and I had already patched it several times. So I just decided to try something different.
