  • Hi guys, today it’s a bit of a tutorial on making scale wooden boxes, let’s face it there is nothing like a nice little box! In the Tiger diorama I need several different sized wooden boxes and they all have a specific appearance as depicted in the movie scene the diorama is based on.
This meant that off the shelf stowage was not going to cut it, so I set out on a journey to see how to make actual wooden, wooden boxes. Hopefully there are a few hints and tips in the video that you might find helpful.
As always thanks for taking the time to watch and I look forward to your comments. Take care, I hope you are all staying safe and well.
    Cheers Glen

I've had the same problem finding boxes the right size for a diorama, so this video will be very useful. The finished thing looks just right, I hadn't considered making wood grain with a saw, but it's a trick I'll definitely use. Making wooden items out of wood instead of plastic sheet gives a much more realistic look!

Thanks Ian, much appreciated mate, i was happy with the grain effect teh saw gave, but i think i can get it a bit better, i think i should have lightly sanded the wood after doing the grain to make it a bit more subtle, will try that on the next one. 👍

Very helpful thank you 👍. the coffee shops my wife goes to once a month kindly donate a handful of stirring sticks to my scratch build stock.
They're so nice they even donate them and totally forget they did 😎

Thanks Allan, My coffee shop was the same, but one day one of the guys there asked me, "why to you always take stirrers when you don't even have sugar" I said, "I am using them to build a house", the look of perplexity on her face was priceless 😀😀😀

Very cool Glenn.👍 funny how far we've come in the hobby because I had to make everything I wanted for storage. Like boxes Blankets food cans and my favorite boots. Which were my easiest to make. I miss building I need to just do it. I'm just not a fan of working at the kitchen table.. anyway great job.👍👍

Thanks Clay, everything old is new again 😜 Not having a permanent set up is a pain, i used to work on the kitchen table but the boss had been known to just chuck stuff in the bin on ocasions, it was a dangerous environment 😱

Excellent Glen really like the wood effect and I'm sure we all have bits of off cuts of balsawood now we know what to do with it. A really nice idea with a great result. To much work for motty though😂😂😂

Thanks Greg, much appreciated, Motty doesnt even have to scale down, he already has tiny wood 👍

Great video boxes looked great. Hey when converting your measurements to 35th scale do you have to swap it from inches to mm or can you just leave it on inches and divide by 35. I am live in the U.S. so I am used to inches, and mm just totally confuse me lol

You can just divide by 35. 1/35 is only a ratio of 2 numbers. 1 inch equals 35 inches. 1 foot equals 35 feet. 1 meter equals 35 meters, etc. Scale in inches can get quite unwieldy though (eg. 1/35 of a 1/2 inch may be too small to measure accurately). Millimeters stay closer to workable 'whole numbers' if you know what I mean. Good luck mate.

Hi Joshus, yes Michael is correct, you can do it for sure but for example if the length was 2 foot long, so 24 inches if you divide that by 35 you get 0.6857 of an inch, and i have no idea how to measure that out, hence i do the MM conversion so it gives me a number that at least i can visualise 🤓

Did you apply a varnish sealer after the pastels?

    • @HalidonDioramas
      @HalidonDioramas  2 года назад

NO, not for that one, i was just testing process really, and you have to be careful when you spray over the pastels as you can pretty much remove everything you have done, its tricky :)

Nicely done (and tutored), Glen. You put some work into this so not quite sure it qualifies as a "piece of piss." It IS very good!

Has to be Kelly's Heroes with the boxes of gold ? I make my wooden structures out of bass wood instead of balsa and just use Micro-Mark Age-it EASY #80873 Gray for weathering.
