  • I saw an ad for Maurten Gel 100 in the days leading up to the Berlin Marathon. The ad had Eliud Kipchoge on it. So of course, I had to buy it. It took a couple days for the 12 pack to get to me, and I took it out for a test run on my 15 mile long run last Saturday.
    Overall, the gel works. It kept me at an even keel the entire run, which is probably better for me than the 100mg caffeine I get with each of the gels I usually eat. But, the pack is bulky and heavy, the consistency takes some getting used to, and they're ridiculously expensive.
    I think these might be optimal for winter running where I don't have water fountains to rely on during my runs and where carrying water is suboptimal. But I don't know if these are great for when you've got to stuff a couple in your running shorts.
    Thanks for watching. Leave a comment to let me know you stopped by!

    I just tried the MaurteN out in my running shorts. As a non elite without access to supplements on a race course (we non-elites have to carry our own stuff), it’s perhaps a tad bulky to have a bunch stored in your racing shorts but the MaurteN is awesome even if it’s expensive -the texture and lack of taste goes so easy, way easier than a gel in my opinion. They are expensive but I guess if I’m spending hundreds of dollars trying to PR in the marathon, it’s worth it.

    The "big thing" about these is the jello like stuff the carbs are encapsulated. Basically what they are saying the fructose and maltodextrin is packed in that gel thing and does not get broken down in the stomach so you won't get stomach problem. It passes the stomach and only gets released directly in the intestine where the carbs are being absorbed

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  6 лет назад +2

      a good point. some people have stomach issues with traditional gels. these were quite easy on the gut.

    • @bikeinmotion
      @bikeinmotion 6 лет назад

      Basically what they are saying you can stuff about 100g of carbs into your body per hour whereas with normal gels over 60g gets problematic for many people

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  6 лет назад +1

      totally understand. but 100g of carbs an hour means i have to take in 4 of these per hour. For a 3:30 goal marathon pace, that'd mean I'd have to carry the entire box!
      i am thinking these are not intended for 3:30 marathoners like myself.

    Great review, thank you, Everything about Maurten products make sense. ( Hydrogel Technology, amount of carbs per servings, no preservatives etc ) I can see how Maurten is different that the rest. HOWEVER something that I have not been able to quite understand is why 100% of the carbs used in Maurten products come from simple sugars ( Maltodrextin, Fructose and Glucose ) there is NO complex carbs on any Maurten products. Yes, simple sugars will spike the level of glucose in your system giving you a burst of instant energy but in the same way they come with the after crash. (Don't they) I have studied most of the gels in the market and found around 90% of them with a combination of Complex carbs which is energy released gradually, ideally for long distance competitions and simple sugars. Maurten ONLY has simple sugars and this is what makes me go riddles about it's effectiveness for long distance competitions. Do Marathoners really need these spikes of sugar during 3 or 4 hours? how about the after crash? Thank you for reading, I would love to hear your feedback on this. Best of luck.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 лет назад +1

      i'm not a dietician or nutritionist, but i think the idea with Maurten is to get sugars into the system in a way to get them used as quickly as possible. and then repeat very frequently. i understand it as trying to fuel the system as fast as it can burn it.

    One thing I never really understand is *how* people focus on what the latest "industry tech" is.
    While I do understand how its amazing to watch the development of all these "optimizations" for top athletes. May it be running shoes (yes talking about Nike 4%) or nutrition (Maurten in that case). And yes if you are at your absolute max with your body and runnning form those things sure make a difference.
    For non-pro runners however there are so many other things to work on and improve to beat PRs other than buying expensive fancy "gel" that Kipchoge was using to break a world record.
    Nothing against trying it tho - but it shouldnt be what takes you to the next level unless you are an elite runner that is already at whats the peak.

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  5 лет назад

      i think we can all agree on that. i think where you disagree is where the demarcation point is for where someone is allowed to try something and another person isn't.

    • @ffmdotcom
      @ffmdotcom 5 лет назад +1

      @@kofuzi it really isnt about being allowed or not - it's everybodys freedom to use whatever equipment is available and prefered (as long as its legal I guess).
      I just always feel like asking "do you beliefe a new gel or running shoe really is the best you can do to get better at running" - I personally think its the last thing to improve of all things involved but surely its the easiest to get a new shoe or gel.
      Dont take my comment too serious - I think I'm just a little rigorous :-D

    You should definitely try their drink mixes as well. I've been using them for workouts and long runs and they work well as a pre-run carb loader. used it at Trondheim marathon - had 12 of them during the race (now I did the run in a more unorthodox way by just powerwalking... so average time pr. k was 7 min 40 seconds). Since it was a 4 lap run I had a station for supplies so brought 3 pr. lap - so a littlebit less than the suggested 4 pr. hour. I both tried with and without water - I had them in a belt with small pockets so they did not bounce at all (now since I walked maybe thats why - but I don't think they would bounce with that belt I used (a "FlipBelt Zipper") . Anyways the first 2 1/2 lap I only had these bags and some water at the waterstations. Later on I also had a bit of sportsdrink and then coke/coffee mix. I must say I think these really helped me during the race as I did not feel any fatigue and it made me feel very fresh. I both tried ripping the top off and have a little at a time (which felt ok) and a full bag (that felt a tad much) - but holding the bag for a few minutes was not really a problem. I finished the race at 5 hours 24 minutes - so I know - not the 3:30 race time... but 12 bags in 5 hours seems alright

      Logistics play a factor. What is convenient for a cyclist to carrying and consume during their race is different than what a marathoner can carry and consume during their race.

      When trying new stuff, I usually like to start out with what's most readily available. Clif shots were easy for me to order on amazon in relatively small amounts, which meant I didn't have to make a special trip to a running store. I actually started out with Gatorade gummies for the sheer convenience. I can get them at my grocery store. And while I always still have some on hand. They're not my favorite.

    Bought these as well!! Love Maurten, but I cannot stand these gels. The texture combined with zero flavor gags me every time I try to get them down. Took them on my 18 miler last weekend and I have to actually stop and force them down. I know they aren’t the most popular but I think I am gonna stick with combining the drink mix 320 and using Gatorade gels with really good luck. They have a consistency of a thin syrup almost and go down smooth. I may try the Maurten again this weekend on the 15 miles but I cant decide yet. Has me leery of trusting them for Chicago thats for sure.
    Any opinion on the Zoom FLy Flyknits vs Peggy Turbos? I want a pair but the OG Zoom Fly beat me up quite bad and now I just can’t push the button. Any input towards the Flyknits vs V1 would be awesome too.

      I ultimately think that if you like the Pegasus for every day, then you should look at the Turbo for race day. And if you like the Epic React for every day, then you should look at the Zoom Fly Flyknit for race day.
      Now there are also a lot of us out there that like both the Pegasus and the Zoom Fly. And in that case, it's largely a matter of preference. What kind of fast do you prefer, the push off from the zoom fly plate or the fast turnover from the turbo's geometry?

    • @charlesblades1203

      I ended up ordering them. If they aren’t for me I can always return them to Nike.
      I love the Pegasus Turbo. However, unlike the name implies they don’t give me any “turbo”. Awesome shoe, very soft and fun, but not a race day shoe imo. But if these ZF Fks don’t work out I may end up in one pair of my Turbos for Chicago. Would love to have a pair of Vaporflys but that price is ridiculous for what they are. I’m own old man now, not sure if PRs (which are slow) are worth $250 (on top of the entry/travel fees etc.). But who knows if I can find $250 disposable dollars I may pick them up.
