- Maurten recently released a version of its GEL100 that now has caffeine! I was able to take it while on a 22 mile run last weekend, and overall, the word I would use to describe it is Potent. It has 100mg of caffeine, and with Maurten's fast absorption qualities, the caffeine hits you fast.
The only thing now that I wish Maurten had was salt.

Gah, this video makes me so excited and happy. Thanks for the heads up on this new product. I can't wait to try it
I hope you enjoy!
Thanks for the great options.Very interesting.
an exciting new product in this segment
Got my CAF100 today and I'm excited to give this a try. Thanks for the review!
Let me know if the caffeine kind of hits you all at once.
@@kofuzi So just getting back to this CAF 100. I had a 20 miler planned yesterday but I also had signed up for a half marathon as well. So I ran a 7 mile warmup prior and finished it just before the start of the Half Marathon. My Goal was to really just run it around my full marthon pace. I opened up with a regular Maurten gel around 3.5 miles into my Warmup. Then around mile 5 of my Half (12 Miles In) I tried my first CAF 100. I can attest that either my mental game really made me think it was a difference maker, or it really was the CAF 100. I literally just continued to feel great. So much that the longer I ran the better I felt, and suddenly started running my half marathon paces with what seemed like moderate effort. I capped it off around the mile 9-10 with the last regular Maurten Gel. So from my limited expereince, I can say that I definitely felt a difference and will probably alternate with them during my Marathon. Sorry for the long Reply. Congrats on the Chicago Half!! You killed it. Can't wait to see the race breakdown video soon. :)
I tried one of these for the first time last Friday. I’ve never drunk tea or coffee, and don’t eat much chocolate. I had horrendous stomach cramps for 5 hours! I also went to bed at 11pm and didn’t fall asleep till 2am. 😮 One for the coffee drinkers I think.
Wow tried the new Maurten CAF100 today on my 13.18 mile night run. Works great was easy on my digestion. The one problem is it’s 9:20pm and I’m wide awake 😂 and I have to be up at 5am. Going to try it on my 20 mile run Friday along with my normal Maurten gel/drink mix routine.
the caffeine delivery is right on, for better or worse
Loved this gel review! I also ran the Bus Run on Saturday and it was so nice to have a point to point route (despite the humidity)!
It was so friggin hot
Looking forward to trying this gel one day, limiting my caffeine intake now because of my Chemix Preworkout with Chemix Intra/EAA, man that stuff is heavy duty!!
I’m not familiar with chemix. Sounds interesting
Get the ok from your heart doctor only do half scoops!
Great information, thank you ! At the end of my long runs, and afterwards, I seem to always have an electrolyte imbalance. I’ve been trying the “Salt Sticks- FASTCHEWS” for the additional salt. They’re about the same size as Rolaids/Tums, and come in small packets, so very easy to carry.
i might have to investigate further. i bought pills, but i was told that i had to carry them in a ziplock bag to as to avoid getting them wet or they would start foaming.
i think for a product like salt, the delivery method makes or breaks it. because at the end of the day, i can just eat 50 cents worth of pretzels on the course (which I did last year).
@@kofuzi The "Fastchews" come in a 60ct. bottle (which you would not want to carry or swallow while running), small 10ct. "packets" (which are really flat), and small 10ct. rolls. I tried carrying the roll, but found peeling away the outer paper and foil rather cumbersome while running much like Rolaids/Tums. I also tried the packets, and took several packets on a long run, as I new the last remaining few in each packet may get wet with sweat and would dissolve . But they didn't seem to get wet, so all was good. The real benefit of the packets is that they'll fit/slide in, most anywhere. Hope this helps ......... Best of luck !!!
that's very helpful.
Thanks for the review & information on the Maurten caf product. Good luck in Chicago, I’m running as well, it’s my hometown race.
Was waiting for this review!
I have this product but haven’t used it yet. I have a long run this Friday that I will try it on hopefully it works out so I can bring it along on my marathon. I also am struggling with my salt intake just can’t find the right balance I am very heavy sweater. Right now I’m using a product called base salts seem to work good I’m just not a huge fan of the delivery method.
There was a lady giving out pretzels out of a giant bowl during Chicago 2018. That was perfect for me.
Thanks for the gel review. Just bought Cliff after using GU in anticipation of the Indy Marathon. Question: I “paused” my run training for the 26.2 a few days ago due to some hip pain and subsequent soreness possibly due to increased miles and some poor running mechanics due to being tired and upping my training miles. If my one sore hip feels pretty much better should I resume training and long runs or am I “toast” for Indy? Just seeking non-doctor feedback...
my non-doctor feedback would be to consult a medical professional.
that being said, if it's increased mileage that's causing it, i'd try to pull back on the mileage and hit the bike or other non-impact aerobic activity to keep that aerobic load high.
I was at my local running shop Gazelle Sports picking up my long run nutrition and I saw the Maurten gels so I took a look at it and was totally thrown back by the cost , im a GU guy so far and it sounds like I need to give the Maurten a try.
Thanks for the review.
Do you normally buy yours by the box online ?
when gel100 first came out, i bought a box. then i would go to a running store to pick up a couple at a time.
when the maurten unofficial came out, i bought a box.
i'm thinking for the caf100, i'll probably by them a couple at a time.
I’m very intrigued to explore this brand
It’s curious, if nothing else
Do you recommend the Maurten drink mixes? I saw that they recommended the 320 mix the night before the 20 mile run and the 160 in the morning.
i had the 160. i didn't find it remarkable one way or the other.
a lot of people had the 320 the night before the 20 mile group run, but i didn't get a chance to talk to anyone about that.
Keep us posted on what you decide your nutrition will be on marathon day.
Great video. Very informative. Have you tried honey stinger? How do these compare? Thanks
I am not familiar with the sugar/caffeine metrics off the top of my head. but I do recall that the taste of the Honey Stinger gels that I have tried left much to be desired.
I've never tried gels before but I think they could really benefit me and help run the longer distances. I've never tried Nuun or worried about salt during a run either, I feel like I'm missing out lol. Have you ever tried pre-workout before runs? My brother drinks one (he lifts, not runs) with like 160mg of caffeine
i don't really mess with pre-workout. i usually have coffee (~200mg caffeine) and have a cookie or waffle (~20-30g carbs?)
Great video! Just picked up a CAF 100. Curious, how many gels are you carrying with you at the start? Are you having people staged along the race route hand you gels or bottles? Thanks!
i'll go over my marathon race plan in a video next week.
i won't have anyone handing me things from the course. but if that lady around mile 9 has a giant bowl of pretzels again, i will definitely grab a handful.
to answer the question directly, 4 or 5 gels for the marathon.
@@kofuzi Thanks! That is helpful!
Have you tried WinForce gels? I love their Ultra Energy Complex concentrate. The other gels I had caused stomachache.
I am not familiar
Geez, and I thought Spring Energy gels were expensive... Something to look into though. I usually just stick to tri-berry or roctane GU Gel. Been wanting to try another gel to mix it up though. This product seems like its best preserved for long tempo runs or half+ races.
because of the relatively low salt, i personally find these most compelling for cool weather racing. like 40-60 degrees F
How do you consume Maurten gels? Chew them a bit or just swallow in 1-2 pieces?
Yes
2 things. First, followed on Strava. Second, I am curious to see what combination works best for you. Even though I probably have 40lbs on you, I do sweat a lot as well. After Chicago I want to mimic a little of the portions of your ingestion in regards to Caffine, salt, etc. Thanks for being the guinea pig lol i plan to tinker with it over my fall half/endurace schedule then profect it for the Cowtown Ultra Marathon I am doing February (my hometown). I am doing the 5k and 10k the day before to make it an Ultra Ultra marathon. ALso side not, Cliff i like the best, thats my go to.
Always happy to be the guinnea pig!
Maurten gels are great, easier on the digestive system than probably everything else out there. They are indeed expensive but I don't need more than one (if any) during long runs so I don't feel it like other people. That 100mg of caffeine sound like a lot though. Wouldn't like to get the jitters during the last 15 km of a marathon.
i think it might depend on what else you have in your system. i took them again on another run where i had a bit more in my belly at the time of ingestion, and it didn't quite get the jolt
I may be the only one but I hope its a warmer marathon day in Chicago this year. At the very least dry. I was miserable last year when it was cold and rainy.
cold and rainy is my wheelhouse
Hey man! getting my Chicago marathon fueling plan finalized.
Looking at doing the following:
Mile 6 & 18: maurten gel 100
Miles 12 & 22: caf 100 gel 100 maurten
Also will have 80mg of carbs in a bottle (Bare performance G1M sport) to sip on throughout... most likely half a bottle (45 min per 1/4).
Totals: about 45g of carbs per hour on the race (goal time sub 3 hours)
What do you think about this fueling plan?
I’d be concerned about having enough salt (I’m not familiar with your bottle drink). I’d also be concerned that every six miles might be a bit too spread apart. Maybe could you squeeze in another gel?
Do you use Gels in half marathon races?
Yes. I’ll be bringing two
I know for myself the SiS orange isotonic gels are the ones I will be using for the amsterdam marathon. I think that 6 should be enough and I can carry them comfortably.
Those are pretty big too though
I use the same ones too. The orange flavour is nasty though, tastes like medicine. I prefer the lemon and lime one or apple one
I've never tried any gel. After taking a gel should I stop at a water station to drink a bit of water? Should I take a gel every 10K?
most people like water after or with their gel. i don't necessarily need them that way.
i used to space them out every 6 miles. then 5. now maybe a little more frequently than that. it depends on how hard you're working, how hot it is, how you're feeling. you should experiment
Do you think they will have these available for purchase at the Chi Half Marathon Expo?
Depends on what vendors bring, but I would say probably not. But there is a fleet feet in the area of the expo. I’m sure they’ll have it (since they carry maurten gel100). Otherwise, heartbreak hill run co has it. I don’t have any confirmed info on other retailers.
@@kofuzi Thanks, ya i checked FF, says they have some online.. hopefully have 1 or 2 left for me tomorrow. I will look for ya this weekend! Have fun and good luck on Sunday!
Look into making your own gels and putting them in a soft flask. Buy stuff like cluster dextrin, sea salt and caffeine powder and just make your own custom gels with the best ingredients for less money per serving.
That seems like a lot of work and then Im not sure I’d want to carry a soft flask. But I like this concept for trail running
How much miles do you need to run to be able to take these?
My general rule is that I want gels for every run longer than 10 miles, and I will then have one every 5 miles
@@kofuzi ok thank you
How do you tell if you are bonking cuz of lack of salt vs. sugar?
muscle lockup vs tired
Hey mate. Will you pre pop a gel before a 10KM race?
probably note, but it might depend on how much time there would from the time i could leave my house and when the race started
Too much sugar before a race raises your insulin. I like to give my metabolism at least 45 min of running before adding carbs
you can score 24 packs of the clif double mocha expresso 100's for $19 on eBay
A good price
My question was going to be “ what did you use to rig up behind The gels as a prop”, but I watched to the very end of the video and got a clue. We still can’t figure out what that little reddish orange thing was.
play doh
kofuzi #thatdadlife
What watch did you use on that run?
apple watch with stryd and also a polar vantage v
strava data is from polar vantage v
What’s your thoughts about polar vantage v vs Apple Watch?
What is your experience with Maurten vs Huma+
Ivan Drago vs Rocky.
Two of the best.
Completely different approaches.
kofuzi thanks Ive been ussing the Huma+ mixed with Honey Stinger Waffles and salt tabs, and carrying my own bottle of water with Tailwind lol this could be my fuel for my next moth Marine Corps Marathon 50K, thanks Kofuzi, you all the time helping and interacting with your followers.
How many gels is enough in a marathon distance race?
However much your body needs +1
Zero
About 4-5 if you're also drinking sports drinks is probably enough
The marketing is crazy with this one, I wonder if it's really more effective than any other gel or just an apple for that matter.
Does an apple have 100mg of caffeine?
@@kofuzi I'll be running around with a pot of coffee in hand next time.. #checkmate
Can’t carry a bag of apples, but hoping to see someone with a bag running this weekend.
I have not heard any Americans talk about pocari sweat. Is it because it's not available there?
Any pocari sweat people here?
not a fan, i get the runs after drinking 2 cans of it.
@@SlowandFat I thought they came in bottles or powder?
Not a fan and still drink it?
@@emmanueleng1160 I got them in cans, only tried a few times to clear the cans I have. Stopped using them totally
@@SlowandFat ooo I see.
I use the powder. Great taste no stomach issues and reduced muscle cramping on long runs.
It’s here...
Petty exciting product
CAFFEINE YAY!!!
That’s what I said
Have you tried Science in Sport gels? Their electrolyte gel has 300mg of sodium in them, and I plan to take one every 20 minutes from the 1hr 20 minute mark at the Chicago marathon (this has worked at other marathon's). They are pre mixed in the gel packet, so you don't need to take them with water like most other gels www.scienceinsport.com/au/shop-sis/go-range/go-gels/go-energy-electrolyte-gel-60ml-30-pack-raspberry
i've tried them
ruclips.net/video/14vxY6UwYhQ/видео.html
100mg is nothing compared to some pre-workout drinks, those have 300-400mg
Are you supposed to chug pre workout drinks? Or do you consume the two cups of coffee worth of caffeine over time?
@@kofuzi I believe most people try to consume it prior to their workouts, at least that's what the gym rats tell me. Not sure about the running community
Maurten advertises up to 4 gels an hour...have you tinkered with eating more than 2 in an hour? 4 really seems like a lot...and unwieldy to carry that many for a race.
if you do the math, you'd have to carry a box with you if you are a normal person running a marathon
How do you like that shirt?
which one?
kofuzi sorry lol the one you’re wearing in your house while talking about the gel
@@Tomahawkbeast it's a bit too fashun for me, but i like it. i've only run in it once so far, as it's been too hot, but things are cooling down now.
