  • We are in the land of Cittaslow certified Karagül with a boat tour of the sunken city Halfeti. Our Şanlıurfa trip continues. Halfeti, whose history dates back to ancient times, could not escape being under the waters of the Birecik Dam, albeit unintentionally.
The first settlement in Halfeti BC. It is recorded that it dates back to the 500s. The first settlement in the region started with the Assyrians, then the district hosted many civilizations.
Halfeti, which was submerged during the construction of the Birecik Dam in 2000, was moved. Later, it started to be known as two places, the old and the new Halfeti. Today, Halfeti is also known as the Quiet City - Cittaslow. After the flooding of the Old Halfeti region, the locals settled in the New Halfeti region.
Halfeti Houses, a minaret rising from the waters, a suspension bridge, and Karagül, which grows only in the quiet town of Halfeti, are among the must-see spots in the region, which is home to a unique architecture with its 2500-year history. It is also known as Halfeti Ancient City and it takes a day to be fully explored.
    Greek Castle
Built on a peninsula in the Euphrates River, Rumkale is within the borders of Gaziantep. The castle, which was built at the confluence of the Euphrates River and Merzimen Stream, is accessible by boat. Although it was occupied by the Byzantines and later by the Armenians in the Middle Ages, it is among the historical structures that have survived to the present day due to its sheltered location.
The construction year of the Greek Castle is BC. It is estimated to be 855 years old. The castle, which was under the auspices of the Armenian Church between 1203 and 1293, was later conquered by the Egyptian Mamluks and the Ottoman Empire. The castle, which came under the domination of different civilizations, carries traces of every civilization, so it appears with a complex architecture. The view it offers during the sunset has also caused it to be added to the list of places to visit.
There are also historical buildings around the castle, which was opened to visitors after the restoration works carried out in recent years. These structures are St. Nerses Church and Barşavma Monastery.
    Warring Village
Savaşan Village, which was established on the banks of the Euphrates River, is among the areas affected by the construction of the Birecik Dam. Despite this situation, the region, which has not lost its historical value, has a unique authentic structure with its stone carved houses. The most striking point in the village is the minaret of the mosque, whose body is submerged in water.
Savaşan Village, which is among the places to visit in Halfeti, is an abandoned village today. After being submerged, the villagers were relocated to the area 30 kilometers away and New Halfeti was established here. However, a minority that did not leave their village still lives here. The people who still live here, on the other hand, establish family businesses on the beach and serve.
    black Rose
Black Rose, which grows only in a part of Halfeti district, has become the symbol of the district. It is an endemic species known as Arab bride, Arab beauty, Mesopotamian hyacinth. During your visit to Halfeti, which is the most popular route of Urfa, you can see these roses and buy them if you wish. Although these roses are tried to be grown elsewhere, it is said that they are not like here.
    Shabutfish
Shabut fish, a fish species found only in the waters of the Euphrates, unique to this region, is among the oily and delicious freshwater fish. This fish, which can weigh up to 15 kilograms, is very tasty when steamed and grilled.
