Developer 1: "Well, friend, do you want to make money? Or do you want to make art?" Developer 2: "I want... to make art." Let's salute the developers for bringing us this magical game. One of the few outstanding J-RPGs of this horrible generation of consoles.
Just the fact that this game was even MADE was a miracle, I think. With "next-gen" consoles most big-budget productions played it safe by cranking out the thousandth first-person shooter for quick money and VC was an innovative SRPG with money spent in the right ways for once on a sincere game. And naturally, most people are off playing the thousandth shooter rather than this gem. :\ I like some shooters but this game is one of the top five of this generation of consoles IMO. Thanks, Sega.
Absolutely agreed. Out of hundreds of games this generation, Valkyria Chronicles is fresh on my mind. I need to play it again. Also I need to finish Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3 which I'm near the final chapters for both.
I must've watched this video like 10 times in a row. I'm a sucker for good soundtracks, and this one is excellent. You can hear how they took a few pages from the LotR one. I now have a fourth reason to regret not owning a PS3, after God of War, Killzone and Resistance.
Probably the only few times the characters actually left an impact on me and I began searching and reading about them was when I watched Band of Brothers and when I finished any VC game
Ryutaro Nonaka and Shuntaro Tanaka, thank you for this perfect piece of art ...it's more than just a game>> an emotional experience! ...excellent work, guys! congratz ...cheers
It’s so sad that we’ll likely never see another Valkyria Chronicles game again :( Oh well, at least we can always look back and celebrate this franchise even existing as long as it did! And who knows…
Sadly. Studio Overworks + Mediavision (today Team Valkyria) are very talented devs and made allways great games, but most of their games always flopped. They created: Sakura Wars 3-5, Sakura Wars In Hot Blood (PS2 Remake of first Sakura Wars from SEGA Saturn), Wild Arms series, Skies of Arcadia, Valkyria Chronicles 1-4 - and only Sakura Wars 3/4 sold good in Japan. Rest games - flopped. I think it's all SEGA fault, they focus WAY to much attention to only Yakuza and Sonic, when rest of IP's seems be underadverised so hard. Not to mention the bad release dates for these games - Skies of Arcadia was released on dead platform in West (Dreamcast) just after Final Fantasy IX, Valkyria Chronicles 4 was released with Monster Hunter World, Pokemons (in Japan) and with Dragon Quest XI, Tomb Raider, Battlefield, Octopath Traveler ... (in West).
Valkyria isn't confirmed dead yet although 4 didn't sell quite the numbers and barely had any merch either compared to the other 3 games. Maybe we'll see VC5 sometime in the mid to late 2020's when SEGA remembers it exists again. It did take them almost 7 years after 3 to make 4
@@vito7428 And that is the problem with non Yakuza / Sonic games. Very long time gasp between older and newest game, without any marketing ( or only cash grabs like collaborations in obscure P2W mobile games) when we got finally a newest game in x series. Yakuza and Sonic have a literally new game for 1-2 years, rest IP's for 7-15 years. And that's one of reasons why those games dont sell well. Nintendo made new game in each series relatively fast.
@@nr2676 Well yeah because those are much more famous and sell well. Valkyria is very niche and all 4 games have never really sold well, usually having mediocre or decent sales in Japan only. At this point I seriously doubt Valkyria 5 will ever happen. But it did take them 10 years to release a'true sequel'to 1. So here's hoping we'll get 5 sooner or late. I just hope it doesn't turn too much into a one game per decade thing like Company of Heroes
@@vito7428 Because Valkyria Chronicles never got a good marketing campaign, even in Japan. This is result of very bad sales their last game - Sakura Wars So Long My Love and Skies of Arcadia, thats why Sega dont trust them anymore and dont give them more budget. It is very niche because Sega dont know how those games market properly. Sonic and Yakuza can sell now without any marketing, but rest of their IP's need something more than just one or two random trailers before release date. And bad release date of those games also dont help. This series just need more money for marketing. If Sega think is good idea to release Valkyria Chronicles 4 with Monster Hunter World (crazy popular IP in Japan) and Dragon Quest XI in West, there is literally no chance a casual buy this game. If Triangle Startegy (a SRPG with huge focus on VN elements like VC) can sell well, 800 000 copies in one month i dont see a reason why Valkyria Chronicles cant do that too.
Such a tender and a wonderful story, that all the world's words won't be enough to describe the feelings it brings to you. It is like to fall in love with a person. Great respect to the developers, a unique masterpiece which makes you cry from happines and not from sadness.
This sounds very similar to the Skies of Arcadia title screen theme. Did anybody ever notice that? Both games were made by much of the same people, but many years apart.
This intro has such a Band of Brothers feel to it. In my opinion, one of the best games ever. Superb voice acting, amazing graphics, cool gameplay, interesting story, likeable characters. This game has it all.
@d0minho Yeah, I got the BoB feeling because both intros use action and normal daylife routine scenes. You can see the character's emotion and thoughts and how they act in and out of combat. And the intros end with a coup-de-grace, VC uses the interaction between Welkin and Alicia and BoB uses the interaction between the entire company. And, of course, the two intros are both supported by an amazing track that hits you on the emotional level.
And still only 1 of 3 games developed by Sega who won GOTY: - Sakura Wars in 1996 (Japanese Games Awards - GOTY 1996) - Phantasy Star Online in 2000 (Japanese Games Awards - GOTY 2000) - Valkyria Chronicles in 2008 (best PS3 game & best strategy game in 2008 + Guiness Record) Two of them (Sakura Wars and Valkyria Chronicles) were made by exactly same dev team.
That was... suprisingly legit. Crap, this actually looks pretty good. I really enjoyed the music. If the game is anything like I imagine it to be based on this video, I am officially intrigued.
@@SuaveSpyMojo funny story. Im actually playing it right now! (Specically the ps4 remaster) It's ... pretty good? I wound up playing the psp sequels first and I think that tempered my enjoyment of the playing the original. I like the maps and gameplay in the sequels better, plus quality of life stuff like the ability to retreat people directly from the menu without having to take control first. Being able to choose to not watch the opponent's turns turns is an inalienable right that should be present in every VC. The story suffers a bit for me if only because I've only seen two other similar stories before this, but that's not this game's fault. Honestly, the more I play, the more I find myself appreciating the understated ghibliesque war story they've crafted here. Events have gravitas and nothing is simple. It's a war game that doesn't love war, something i appreciate more as i grow older. I still really like the music. The games always have very brassy music, quite unlock what you'd hear in other games. It does a good job of evoking the optimismic sound of early 1900s Europe.
The Hug at the end looks very similar to the hug between Rinoa and Squall in Final Fantasy VIII, Great games look alike? Im pretty sure its just a coincidence but both are awesome games.
God I love this game. I feel so bad I waited so long but I finally found a used copy from Gamestop, in rather good condition too! I will treasure it as if it were brand new :)
Before this came out i thought it was going to be shit mostly because it was made by Sega, but damn, I was wrong. I love Valkyria Chronicles, one or my favorite games this gen
Actually, the anime is based after the game. I know because I got this game when it just came out and the anime wasn't even anounced yet, nor the many manga.
@Luminahawke Yea the game came out in 2008 i know its outdated, b\i've looked on ebay for a copy and most of the copys on there are from the united kingdom

Reminder that after the first game SEGA had literally no idea what to do anymore and butchered the art design and refused to keep the weaponry grounded. Since 2 the series has been Magical Girl Wars With Laser Beam Swords, and Azure Revolution looks no different
My only beef with this game was the scoring system for completing a mission. The games wants you to absolutely blitz a level with Alicia rather them use good battlefield tactics. If you get past that it's very well done game with an art style that will age very well.
Some new PSPs are only like $99 now. The prices will probably go lower when the Vita is more popular. But yeah, I really feel sorry for Valkyria Chronicles fans who can't otherwise play VC2 and VC3. I heard a rumor that they might make it available for PS3 eventually, but that could be just false hope. Either way, it's really terrible that Western players can't even play VC3 in English right now.
This really isn't a game where a bunch of a good natured people team up and kick ass, you were barely scraping by half the time and then somehow expected to spearhead an assault. Agreed, it's a shame they went back to the tired old BS of "Oh we're just kids but we're GENIUS'" story line in the sequel. Hopefully the 3rd (which is only for PSP *sobs*) is better.

One of the few video games whose ending actually made me cry. No joke.
tears of happiness and not tears of sorrow which is even more unique
It took till the end for you to cry if so your heart is made of stone
Even after nine years this song still brings a tear to my eye. ;_;

I was about to cry just now for some reason. And it's only been a few years since I beaten the game.
A very special game I will never forget.

No

Don't forget Band of Brothers.
This has a really strong Band of Brothers vibe. Compare to that show's intro.
That's what I immediately thought when I first heard this.
I think that was the point. Because it is a family. Even the grunt soldiers in it you want to protect and keep alive.
I think the dev team was watching BoB one day and thought "hey, this opening is dope! Why don't we make one for our game?"
KoeSeer they saw into the future just to see band of brothers XD
